FELTON, Banardus A., Westfield, CC-172
FELTON, Bernardus A., Sherman, CC-155b
is
Bernardus FELTON was originally named Bernardus Vervelde. (Pronouncing
"velde" in Dutch sounds a lot like "felta" in English.) He was born 16 Feb
1816 in Aalten, Gelderland, Netherlands, son of Garrit Vervelde & Janna
Hondorp Vervelde. On 25 Nov 1842 in Aalten he married Willemina (Amelia)
Legters. They and their two children came to the U.S. in January 1847. Had
another three children here. At some time after Willemina/Amelia died in
1885 he married Harmina te Kempel Damcott (my gg grandmother), widow of
Engelbartus Damkot/Damcott. Harmina was noted for her ornery disposition -
at her funeral the preacher said that she had been her own worst enemy.
Bernardus died 8 April 1891. They are all buried in Clymer Hill Cemetery,
Clymer.
I believe that Bernardus served in the Civil War with Co.E of the 154th Regt
of NY Vols. Not only was he a married man with children, he also was a lot
older than most of the soldiers.
His oldest son, Garret Jan/John, ( see below) also served in the Civil War.
Garret Jan was born 25 Feb 1843 in the Netherlands. He enlisted 31 Jul 1862
at Westfield, mustered in as private, Co. E, 112th Inf, NY Vols on 15 Aug
1862, wounded in action 30 Jul 1864 near Petersburg, VA, mustered out 6 Jul
1865 at Lovel Hosp, Portsmouth Grove, RI.
Garret's first wife, Sarah Galloway, was born 28 Jun 1851 in Ireland. She
died 10 Sep 1893. His second wife was Johanna Volk, b.14 Mar 1875. She died
1953 & is buried in Holland Cem, Clymer. Garret died 5 Sep 1903. He & Sarah
are buried in Quincy Cem, Ripley.** from family data of Thelma Heil

** Milton M FENNER belonged to the GAR Post in Fredonia excerpt from his BIO see full at the message boards;
Chautauqua Milton Fenner was born July 28, 1837, the seventh in a family of nine children.
He was born and spent his early years in South Stockton, working on the family farm.
Mr. Fenner always aspired to become educated, although the death of his father when he was 13
forced him to stay home to support his mother and siblings. In 1855 he was off to Allegheny College
and eventually received his MD from Electic Medical Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1860.
Dr. Fenner started a private practice in the Flint, Michigan area.
After approximately a year in that practice, the Civil War began. Dr. Fenner immediately enlisted,
and was appointed hospital steward and war correspondent for two Michigan newspapers.
He was quickly promoted in rank due to valorous conduct.
During the siege on Fort Pulaski the captain and first lieutenant of his company both resigned,
and Dr. Fenner assumed responsibility and led the company during the battle.
He was a first lieutenant in the trenches at the fall of Ft. Wagner.
In April, 1864 he became Assistant Surgeon of the US Navy and was a staff member
of Admiral Dahlgran's on board the Philadelphia the night that Fort Sumter was attacked.
Dr. Fenner also served as a first lieutenant under General Sherman.
While on a leave of absence from the navy,
Dr. Fenner visited the Jamestown area and found an opening in the medical field.
He resigned his post with
the navy and stayed in Jamestown practicing medicine and publishing "The
Medical Progress", a monthly publication devoted to medicine and caring for
the sick. In 1866 he became the consulting physician for the Chautauqua
County Insane Asylum.
