1843, near Jamestown NY, he enlisted during September of 1861. He broke his
ankle in going down with his dying horse at Brandy Station on August 1,
1863, and was captured. Sent to Belle Isle and exchanged within two months,
Hodges was hospitalized in Washington. There is a family anecdote concerning
a visit made by Abe Lincoln to the hospital and asking young Hodges what he
could do for him. Hodges got a laugh out of the President when he asked to
be left alone until he got well enough to rejoin his unit. A "cowhand in
Kansas for a few years after the war," Hodges returned to Lakewood NY where
he raised a family. He lived in East Rochester NY from 1908 until his death
in 1924.
**
Corporal Alpheus Hodges of the 9th New York Cavalry
Survivors of this unit in Colonel Thomas Casimir Devin's Brigade under
General John Buford claimed that one of their soldiers had fired the first
shot on this morning. According to the veterans, a 20-year old Corporal,
Alpheus (or Alphonse) Hodges of Company F, was in charge of a four-man post
of pickets on the Chambersburg Pike where it crossed a stream known as
Willoughby Run. He was instructed, upon the sight of the enemy, to send word
back to Colonels Devin and Gamble immediately. At about 5 am, mounted enemy
was seen approaching on the road from the direction of Cashtown.
Immediately, Hodges sent his men back to notify his superiors, and then
"rode to higher ground far enough to see that the men approaching were
Confederates." Retreating, the enemy fired upon him. Hodges then claims to
have "retired to the Run where, from behind the abutments of the bridge" he
fired off numerous shots at the Confederates. Hodges insisted that this
action did not take place any later than 5:30 am.
When dedicating their monument on the east side of Buford Avenue in 1888,
the regiment included on that monument a bronze relief depicting a mounted
sentinel entitled "Discovering the Enemy." An inscription also stated
"Picket on Chambersburg Road, fired on at 5 am." This started a firestorm of
controversy regarding who shot first with the 8th Illinois Cavalry...

** Hamilton Ontario Canada
A well known Hamiltonian at the time who served in the war was Erastus D.
Holt, a bookseller and stationer whose store was at 44 King St. E.(1) Upon
deciding to entering the military service of the United States, Holt closed
his store and went to New York where he enlisted with the 49th New York
Infantry. According to McCulloch, he took with him "enough men to make up a
full regiment."(2) His military career proceeded as follows: on September 7,
1861 attained rank of 1st Lieutenant; promoted to Captain on November 10,
1862; he served at this rank until August 12, 1864 when he was promoted to
Lt. Colonel. Shortly afterwards, upon Colonel Daniel Bidwell's promotion to
Brigadier-General on August 18 of the same year, Holt became the 49th
Infantry's new commander. He served in this capacity until April 7, 1865,
just a few short days before the War's end, when he died of wounds received
in battle.(3) During the course of his service, the regiment participated in
numerous, vicious battles, including: Yorktown, Savage Station, Malvern
Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Petersburg and Cedar
Creek. Erastus Holt is briefly mentioned in the Hamilton Spectator when it
published a letter written by J. Archible, who had undertaken a trip to
Washington. He visited the 49th Infantry, which was stationed outside of the
city; of this meeting with Holt, he wrote: "I succeeded, however, after a
good deal of fatigue, in reaching the camp of the 49th New York Volunteers,
where I met an old friend and a former resident of Hamilton, in the shape of
Capt. E. D. Holt, who hold [sic] a commission in the 49th, as a Captain. I
spent a few hours with the Captain very pleasantly, and [he] wished me to
stay longer, but as I had but a limited period to stay on the other side of
the Potomac, I could not accept of his kind invitation to stay longer... He
died shortly before the war's end of wounds sustained in Battle near
Petersburg, Virginia.

Rev. Nicholas Howell Holmes D.D., a former pastor of the Methodist Episcopal
church in this place, died in Washington, D.C. on Friday night, in the 74th
year of his age. (* 1915) Readers of the Courier have been advised of the
long and painful illness through which Dr. Holmes passed before death came
as a welcome relief. Rev. Holmes was born in Denmark, Dec. 29th, 1841, and
came to America in 1858 locating in Chautauqua county, New York, where he
was making his home when he answered Lincoln's second call for volunteers,
enlisting in the New York Sharpshooters. He served through the war and was
with the army of General Grant at Lee's surrender at Appomattox. He was
captured by rebels in 1864 and was confined in Libby, Belle Isle and
Salisbury prisons, making his escape from the latter in a Confederate
uniform and walking the entire distance to the Union lines at the Ohio
river, where he arrived in time to vote for Lincoln in November. After the
war he entered Allegheny college from which he graduated. He entered the
Erie Conference of the M.E. church in 1872 and was assigned to Conneautville
as his first charge. (* Obituary, Conneautville Courier, December 15, 1915)

** HOYT, WILLIAM, M. D., of Hillsboro, O., was born in Bolton, Canada East,
September 8th, 1839, When William was fourteen years of age, his parents
moved to Chautauqua county, NY., where they reared him to manual labor upon
a farm, by which he secured a robust and vigorous constitution, that has
been of great benefit to him in the arduous labors of his profession. At the
age of twenty, being thrown upon his own resources, he used all the money he
could earn, in the acquisition of knowledge. In November, 1861, commenced
the study of medicine under A. B. Spinney, of Clymer, N. Y., and continued
in his office until August 8th, 1862, when at his country's call he enlisted
in the 112th Regiment New York Volunteers, as a private, and participated in
much of the marching and fighting that followed, until the close of the war,
through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. Was promoted
to non-commissioned and then to commissioned officer, and was, just before
the close of the war, again recommended for promotion. In June, 1865, being
honorably discharged, he returned to his studies, now at East Saginaw,
Mich., under the same preceptor as before, (he having removed there in the
mean time). In the winter of 1865-'66, he entered the Western Homoopathic
Medical College, at Cleveland, O., where he graduated, February 27th, 1867.
