Isaac T. JENKINS Died July 27 1863 aged 33-11-0 Civil War
Widow FANNY Pensioned at his death;

Regarding Isaac T. Jenkins. I think it is uncertain whether he is buried in
the Richmond National Cemetery as an unknown, or in the Quincy Cemetery in
Ripley. Captain Joseph B. Fay of Co. E, who was also captured at
Gettysburg, wrote from Libby Prison in Richmond on August 15, 1863, "I
regret to inform you that Lieut. Isaac Jenkins died July 27th, at 8 A.M. of
Typhoid fever. He was taken suddenly sick the 15th, but came in an
ambulance and on the cars to this place. He was deranged all the time after
he came here. I have made application to recover his effects through the
kindness of Col. Tilden, consisting of money, watch and chain, memoranda &c.
He was buried and a head board placed at his grave, so that I think his
remains may be found at some future time." (Fredonia Censor, September 9,
1863)
So Isaac Jenkins was definitely buried in Richmond after his death in 1863.
The question is, was he reinterred in the Richmond National Cemetery in the
postwar years (having in the interim become an unknown because his headboard
disappeared or was no longer legible), and his family honored his memory by
erecting a cenotaph in their hometown cemetery (a not uncommon practice)?
Or did the Jenkinses procure his remains and have them shipped home for
reinterment in Quincy? Unless we turn up additional documentation, that
question is unanswerable.
Yours truly,
Mark Dunkelman NYVI154th@aol.com
