they are buried in Mayville Cemetery
* Obit;
Westfield Republican dated August 6, 1902. "Killed by the Cars. Perry
Lincoln, a Former Deputy Sheriff, of the County Lost His Life at Mayville
Monday Morning. Perry Lincoln, who resided near Chautauqua, and who was well
known throughout Chautauqua county, having served at one time as deputy
sheriff of the county, was killed by the cars at Mayville, at an early hour
Monday morning. Just how the accident occurred is a mystery. About 5 o'clock
Monday morning a sleeper was detached from a Pennsylvania train there, and
as the switching was being done pieces of human flesh were found sticking to
the car. Further examination disclosed a part of a human body on a switch
engine which had been used about 3 o'clock in the morning. A search was made
up the track toward Summerdale, when the frightfully mangled body of Perry
Lincoln was found a half mile from the station. It is believed that he was
killed by the switch engine and that the passenger train which came along a
couple of hours later gathered up parts of the body on the running gears of
the cars.
The remains could only be identified by pieces of the clothing which were
found along the track. Lincoln was about 60 years old. He leaves a brother,
Harrison Lincoln, living near Mayville, and a sister Mrs. John Cochrane of
this place."

* the 187th NY was mustered in Buffalo, Erie CO NY;
In the fall of 1864 everything possible was done to organize another
regiment, but as Erie County had during the war always nobly responded, its
resources were nearly exhausted, and it was only possible to organize six
companies, which were mustered into the service of the United States for a
term of two years in October and were nearly all composed of Germans, or men
of German descent. This organization received the name of the 187th Regiment
of Infantry, and was commanded by a lieutenant-colonel and a major. Below we
give the list of officers at the time of muster and some other dates.
Company I. - Captain Daniel Loeb, Lieutenants Frederick C. Hyde and Henry
Tyler. 86 men and officers from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties.
The 187th was attached to the Potomac Army before Petersburg, and took part
in the military operations which resulted in the surrender of that city, and
later in that of Richmond. In the battle of Hatcher's Run the regiment
sustained a loss of 60 men in killed and wounded, and it also took part in
smaller affairs with more or less loss. The regiment, or better the
battalion, was mustered out on July 1st, 1865, at which time the officer's
list showed the following names: Lieut.-Col. Daniel Mayers, Major Conrad
Sieber, Surgeon P.L. Sonnick, Asst. Surgeon E.W. Wachter, Adjutant Henry
Tyler, Captains
*in 1870 and 1880 census, Daniel is living in Dunkirk NY, b ca 1831 Alsace,

COMPANY "K."
Company K was originally recruited by Rev. E.A. Ludwick and George F. Mount,
Esq., in the Towns of Hanover, Villenova and Cherry Creek. Company C had
already been raised in this district. Toward the latter part of the month of
August, several leading citizens of Forestville thought best to attempt to
raise another Company in this district, in order to avoid the impending
draft. To forward this plan, it was proposed to offer bounties additional to
those of the State and General Government, raised by private subscription.
After consulting together, these gentlemen went in a body to the Rev. E.A.
Ludwick, then having charge of the Methodist Episcopal Church in
Forestville, who had already taken an active part in promoting enlistments
by public addresses, requesting him to take up the recruiting of said
Company and go in command of it. After due deliberation, Mr. L. consented
and held his first meeting to recruit for the Company at Smith's Mills, on
the evening of August 27th. The result of this evening's work was 17
recruits. Seven days after, on the 2d day of September, the Company having
its full quota of 83, was organized at Jamestown. Three other Companies were
mustered in the same day, as already stated in the history of Company G.
Lieut. Colville tendered his resignation in January, 1863, and was honorably
discharged the service.
Lieut. Mount, during most of the time the Regiment was in Suffolk, had
command of Fort McLellan, an earthwork commanding the Summerton Road At
Bermuda Hundred, while in command of the picket line when the enemy made a
sudden attack upon it the morning of the 25th August, 1864, Lieut. Mount,
while bravely rallying his men to repel the enemy, received a mortal wound
in the body, surviving only about an hour. In civil life he was a Law
Student, and a young man of much promise.
Early in the winter of 1863, Corporal Henry Hull was promoted 2d Lieutenant
to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of 2d Lieut. Colville. He
was constantly with the Regiment through its various campaigns until the
fata1 1st of June, when, on the bloody field of Cold Harbor, he received a
severe wound which afterwards proved mortal. He was removed to While House
and thence to Washington, where his brother met and did for him all
that filial affection could, but he sunk away gradually, and on the 3d of
July closed his eyes in death. His remains were conveyed home, and now rest
in the cemetery in the beautiful village of Forestville.
Capt. Ludwick, through a highly honorable military career, rose by
successive promotions to the highest position in the Regiment. He lost an
arm at New Market Heights, while in command and at the close of the war led
the remnant of the Regiment home, and having done all for his country in her
dark hour that a true patriot could do, he again resumes the sacred
avocation of Minister of the Gospel, with the heartfelt wish of all his
comrades in campaign for his usefulness and prosperity.
