Mead, Charles.
He was an assistant surgeon and surgeon in the 112th New York Infantry. The
thirty-eight letters-mostly to his sister (1863-1865), explain his duties in
the hospital at Suffolk, Va., and Folly Island, S.C.; tell of contrabands
and deserters coming into camp; of treason among the inhabitants. He
comments on his first battle thus: "the music of the bullets led me to
conclude that in a sanitary point of view a battlefield would not rank very
high." He talks about the Chaplain, tells of a battle along the railroad
from Petersburg to Richmond; has another "darky servant who run the
blockade" and the doctor "freed him;" about being on the march where the
country was nearly deserted and "darkies" sometimes occupied the mansions.
They camped at Taylor Plantation in a wheat field already shocked, so they
fed their about 2,000 horses. He comments on news concerning draft riots in
the North. He was on picket duty since a medical officer must accompany the
pickets in each division. A Negro brigade was added to their division. The
men began fixing winter quarters at Folly Island, S.C. He witnessed a
military execution for the crime of desertion. He tells of an attempt by the
rebels to blow up the Ironside. He mentions the blowing up of the steamer
Maple Leaf with nearly all the personal baggage of the officers of his
brigade. The men repair a sawmill to manufacture lumber. There are quite a
few cases of diphtheria. Some youths from New York smuggled themselves into
camp on a lark and to escape the draft. The provost marshal put them to work
with wheelbarrows, spades and axes. Mead describes the location of the
brigade in the field near Petersburg, tells of desertions and troop
movements, of some shelling and panic. He describes a camp at Deep Bottom,
Va. In Raleigh, in May, a party is sent out to organize home guards from all
loyal citizens, collect fire arms, and to administer the oath of allegiance.
He describes the city of Raleigh and its people.
Charles Mead attended the University of Michigan Medical School in
1855-1857.

MEERDINK
(Merridink), Garet, Clymer, CC-37
Garret Meerdink, b.12 Jan 1840 Velp, Gelderlands, NL, son of Teunis Meerdink
and Aaltje Driessen. Aaltje died in 1849. Teunis married three months
later - he had kids aged 6, 8, & 9 at the time - with Antonia Mechelina
Wansingk. Antonia died in 1851. In 1852 widower Teunis and his three
children came to America, sailing on the "Leila," which docked at NYC on 24
March 1852. Settled in Clymer.
Garret enlisted at Clymer on 11 Aug 1862; mustered in 15 Aug 1862 as pvt
with Co.D, 112th Inf; discharged for disability 4 Feb 1864 at General
Hospital in Virginia.
On 19 Dec 1866 in Clymer he married Hannah ten Hulsen/TenHuisen, b.16 Feb
1848 Clymer (oldest sister of my grandfather Garrett TenHuisen). They lived
on Clymer Center Road in North Clymer, where he was a farmer. Garret died
there 6 Mar 1920; Hannah died 24 Nov 1938 Watts Flats at the home of a
daughter. Both are buried in Clymer Center Cem.
Garret & Hannah were the parents of Frank W., b.29 Sep 1867; Willis Tunis
(William), b.8 Mar 1871; Arthur J., b.19 Oct 1875; Orra D., b.15 Apr 1880;

Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 24 August 1864

* Mother MARY Meerdink pensioned for his service place not named
March 8, 1875 (took a while)
John William (Jan Willem) Meerdink/Meridink. He
was buried alone in Clymer Hill Cem. Has a GAR marker. Gravestone badly
deteriorated. Data appears to be: John W. Meridink, died 13 Feb 1865, age 26
or 36y4m28d.
* notes from Thelma Heil;
Hendrik Jan Meerdink, b.17 Aug 1796 Winterswijk, married Maria (Mary)
Geertruid Slotboom. b.13 Jun 1797 W'wijk. They were the parents of Berend
Willem, b.8 May 1821, Jan Willem, b.19 Aug 1838, and five more kids. The
family came to Clymer in the late 1840s. Most of the kids remained in
Clymer. Son Berend Willem married while he was here & had a daughter Mary.
Shortly after 1850 he & his wife and dtr moved to Wisconsin. He died in
HAMMOND, WI. Mother Mary was still alive in 1875; she transferred
membership from Clymer Hill Reformed Church to Abbe Reformed Church in 1878.
I am theorizing (good word for "guessing"?) that Jan Willem went to Hammond
either to visit or live with his older brother and enlisted in the army
while there. (Those early Dutchmen did an awful lot of moving back and
forth between Clymer & Wisconsin & also between Clymer & Iowa.) Considering
the condition of the gravestone, Jan Willem/John may have been 26, not 36,

The Battle of Antietam, or Sharpsburg, on September 17, 1862, was the tragic
culmination of Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North. That one fateful
day more than 23,110 men were killed, wounded, or listed as missing.
Approximately 4,000 were killed, and in the days that followed, many more
died of wounds or disease. The peaceful village of Sharpsburg turned into a
huge hospital and burial ground extending for miles in all directions.

John Mina 1845-1921 Veteran Co. G.15 N. Y. Engineers. Civil War Veteran
Wife Cenia, 1849-1917
Son Walter 1881 age 5 months John Mina aka John Meinen aka Evert Jan Ongena.
Served w/ Co.G, 15th NY Engineers
His story, from Thelma Heil
Evert Jan Ongena was b 5 Feb 1845 in Aalten, Gelderland, NL, son of Jan
Ongena & Johanna Willemina Meinen. In 1857 he, his widowed mother, brother,
and sister came to America, sailing on the "Casilda," which docked at NYC on
30 Oct 1857. They were traveling with Johanna Willemina's brother and his
family. I do not know of any laws prohibiting widows with young children
from immigrating, but this family seemed to think that there was such a law
and so, on the ship's passenger list, the kids were listed as Meinen, not
Ongena, and were claimed to be children of Johanna Willemina's brother. In
the United States they kept the name Meinen, but the spelling was changed to
Mina, and Jan became John Mina. He married Gesiena (Cena, Sena) te Kronnie
(TeCroney) who was born 12 Jan 1849 in the U.S. Cena died 6 Mar 1917 & John
died 3 May 1921. Both buried Holland Cem. They lived in Clymer.
Children of John & Cena, all born Clymer:
1. William, b 21 May 1870, d 29 Jul 1937, m Hattie Beckerink
2. Henry Elmer, b 25 Jul 1877, d 9 Apr 1897, single
