Mrs. Alma Josephine Carlson, formerly of 854 Prendergast Avenue, died Wednesday evening at the Allen Nursing Home. Mrs. Carlson was born in Jamestown, N.Y., November 24, 1884, the daughter of Nels and Augusta Larson Hanson. Her husband, August Carlson, preceded her in death 30 years ago. At one time, Mrs. Carlson was employed by the Empire Worsted Mills. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and a former member of the Martha Society. Surviving are a step-son, Richard C. Carlson, Bradford, Pa., three sisters, Mrs. Esther Samuelson, Jamestown, Mrs. Edith Titus, Bradford, Pa., and Mrs. Florence Thierfeldt, Frewsburd, N.Y., a brother, Hilmer Hanson, Jamestown, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Henderson-Lincoln. Mrs. Carlson is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Jamestown, N.Y.

Fred Adolph Carlson, 78, of 6 Connecticut Avenue, died at the Jamestown General Hospital at 11:15 a.m. Saturday. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena Lundgren Carlson, s sister, Mrs. Emma Bloom of Sweden, and two nephews, Godfrey Bloom of Jamestown and John Bloom of Rochester and a niece, Mrs. Eric Carlson of Rochester. Mr. Carlson was last employed by the Norquist Manufacturing Company. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Youngberg Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gordon A. Nelson officiating. interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Carlson Jeannine M. Chindgren 1928 2002 5/22/2002 - Jeannine M. Carlson, 73, of 3343 Busti Stillwater Road, died at 8:07 p.m. Wednesday (May 22, 2002) in WCA Hospital. She was the wife of Ralph L. Carlson, whom she married Dec. 26, 1960, in Jamestown. A lifelong area resident, she was born Oct. 21, 1928, in Jamestown, the daughter of Clifford L. and Linnea S. Johnson Chindgren. She was a graduate of Jamestown High School and had been employed part time by the The Post-Journal for 20 years. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and for her love of animals. Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters: Diane Putney of Bemus Point, Julie Beach of Falconer and Janis Lowery of Jamestown; a son, Thomas C. Carlson of Jamestown; five grandchildren: Michael Kote of Cortland, Erin Beach of Falconer, Kassidy and Jack Carlson and Allison Lowery, all of Jamestown; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry Hendrickson, chaplain of Hospice of Chautauqua, will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Mrs. Lena Lundgren Carlson, 81, until recently of 6 Conecticut Street, died at the home of Mrs. Gust E. Bloom, 13 Eighteenth Street at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Amanda Sandberg of Denver, Col. Her husband Fred A. Carlson, died on Sept. 18, 1943. She was born in Sweden and came to Jamestown with her family 81 years ago, at the age of only 10 months. Funeral services will be held at the Youngberg Funeral Home on Saturday at 2 p.m., with Rev. C.H.B. Peterson of the Zion Mission Covenant Church officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Carlson Mabelle L. Lawson 1932 2003 12/24/2003 - Mabelle L. Carlson, 71, of 414 Jefferson St., died at 5:23 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 21, 2003) in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, she was born Jan. 9, 1932, in Jamestown, the daughter of Edward and Faith Gregory Lawson. Before her retirement in 1999, she was employed as a nurse's aide by Heritage Park Health Care Center. Following her retirement she would sew patients clothing at the nursing home to help them. She was a lover of animals and cared for many over the years in her home. She is survived by three daughters: Linda and Brenda Carlson, both at home and Pamela Bowen of South Daytona, Fla.; two sons: Michael Lawson of Jamestown and Patrick Lawson of Wellsville; four grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Jones of Oregon. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Carlson; and a brother, Edward Lawson. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. H. Carlson Marguerite P. Perring 1907 2002 4/8/2002 - Marguerite P. Carlson, 94, of Lutheran Retirement Home, formerly of 225 Weeks St., died at 5:30 a.m. Monday (April 8, 2002) in the nursing home. A native of Jamestown, she was born Dec. 15, 1907, the daughter of Forest J. and Hulda Ryden Perring. She was the widow of Harry A. Carlson, whom she married April 3, 1930, and who died March 7, 1996. She was a 1925 graduate of Jamestown High School, and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Sunshine Society and Esther Circle. She was also a member of Ross Grange. She is survived by a daughter, Marlyn ‘‘Molly’’ Griffith of Falconer; four grandsons: Michael P. Griffith of Gulfport, Miss., Barry H. Griffith of Lockport, John C. Griffith of Falconer and Daniel M. Griffith of Endicott; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Perring. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Wesley L. Hamlin, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, will officiate. 1922 2001 8/7/2001 - Paul H. Carlson, 78, of La Crescent, Minn., formerly 247 Clyde Ave., died Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) in the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisc. He was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Falconer, the son of Harold and Gunberg Neathery Carlson. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 until 1945. He retired as a supervisor after 30 years with MRC Bearings. He was a member and past president of the Foreman's Club, a member of the Moose, the John W. Tiffany Post 53 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion, and the American Legion Post 1 in Albany. He is survived by a son, Paul A. Carlson of La Crescent; a grandson, Stephen P. Carlson of La Crescent; and a sister, Judy McChesney of Falconer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Perley Carlson, whom he married April 5, 1947, and who died June 13, 1997. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. John L. Kuhlmann, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bemus Point, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Carlstrom John R.
1924 2003 John R. Carlstrom Jr., 79, of 611 Jefferson St., died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2003) in the Veteran Administration Hospital, Buffalo. A Jamestown native, he was born Jan. 28, 1924, the son of John and Lillie Hultberg Carlstrom. He was a graduate of Jamestown High School and the School of Modern Photography in New York City. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1943 to 1946. Much of his military service was spent at Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, after being seriously wounded while serving as a rifleman and bazooka man with the 12th regiment ''Eî Company of the Forth Infantry. He received many awards and decorations, including expert infantry badge, combat infantry badge, bronze star, purple heart, good conduct medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two battle stars and World War II Victory Medal. He owned and operated Carlstrom Photography in Jamestown for 23 years. Prior to World War II, he worked as the manager of the former Clayton Dairy Store. He was a 53-year member of Ingjald Lodge 65 IOV, serving as chief in 1978. He was also instrumental in bingo gaming starting in 1981 and served as officer in charge of bingo for eight years. Other memberships include 50-year member of Robert P. Illig Chapter 47 Disabled American Veterans, Lakewood Memorial Post 1286 Amercian Legion, Thomas G. Stone Post 1996 AMVETS. He loved his family and cats. He liked to repair anything that was broken if he could. He was a World War II buff and had collected several books and videos on the subject. He is survived by three daughters: Lucinda Carlstrom of Atlanta, Beth Mong of East Amherst and Ellen Carlstrom of Buffalo; three grandchildren: Amy Frantz of Pittsburgh, Andrew Mong of Ithaca and Lily Anna Carlstrom Lettieri of Buffalo; and a sister, Carolyn Rinaldo of Jamestown. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Viola Drake, whom he married July 3, 1962, and who died Dec. 27, 1999. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in Soldiers Circle in Lake View Cemetery. Cauvel Marjorie Washburg 1906 1980 PJ: Jan, 1980: Marjorie Cauvel, 73, of 130 Fairview Ave., died at 11:30 a.m. Monday (Jan. 21, 1980) in WCA Hospital. A Marlin-Rockwell Corp. employee for 34 years, she had retired in 1967. An area resident all of her life, Mrs. Cauvel, was born in Pickard Hill, Ellery Center, Jan. 29, 1906, a daughter of Elmer and Nellie Anderson Washburg. She was a member of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Odlund of Fluvanna-Townline Road, a son, Harold Cauvel of Rochester; five grandchildren, Douglas H. Cauvel, Craig E. Odlund and Bradley Odlund, all of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Nancy Jo Pimm of Churchville, N.Y., and David W. Cauvel of Rochester, four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Harrington and Esther Rinaldo, both of Jamestown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Franklin Washburg.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Walker, pastor of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 3-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. She is survived by three sons, Frank, Charles and Albert Cederquist; a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Johnson, 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild of Jamestown. Her husband died just 47 years ago today. She was born in Sweden May 6, 1851, and had made her home here 70 years, being a member of the First Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held at the Henderson & Lincoln Chapel Thursday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Constand Johnson of the First Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Cemetery. Chambers, 70, of 156 Buffalo street, for many years engaged in the feed business here and a leading figure in the Chautauqua County Poultry and Pet Stock Association, died at his home today at 2:26 a.m. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl M. Chambers; a son, Arthur J. Chambers, and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Edwards, all of this city. He was born on East Oak Hill, April 14, 1874 and at the age of 20 embarked in the feed business as an employe of the late Robert C. Bradshaw, later being with Benjamin and Orie Hayward and with Purdy Brothers before assuming the retail management of the H. R. Wilber Feed Company in 1914. He went into business with his son, Arthur J. Chambers, in 1921 at 117 East Third Street, moving to the present location, 206 East Second Street, in 1923. He was one of the founders of the county poultry group and at its recent meeting was elected first vice president in recognition of his services. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Lodge, I.O.O.F, Chautauqua Encampment, I.O.O.F. and Mt. Moriah Lodge F. & A. M. 1948 2003 1/5/2003 - Douglas D. Chandler, 54, of 200 S. Price Ave., West Ellicott, died at 2:09 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 4, 2003) in WCA Hospital. He was born June 2, 1948, in Jamestown, a son of Noah Davis Chandler and Beatrice Kennedy Chandler Parsons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1965 to 1969. He was employed by the former Falconer Plate Glass Co. and also had worked for the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion in Celoron as a bartender. He was a member of Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion. Surviving, besides his mother of West Ellicott, are his stepfather, Ralph Parsons of West Ellicott; a sister, Laura Jo Truver of Jamestown; and a brother, David Chandler of Warren. He was preceded in death by his father in 1962; and grandparents, Duane and Mary Kennedy and Noah Davis Chandler Sr. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Msgr. Checkary Maude Brecht 1882 1957 P.J. Clipping dated Feb. 10, 1957: Mrs. Maude Checkary, 68, 30 Venice Street, Celoron, wife of the late Louis P. Checkary, died Friday at her home following a heart attack. She had been in poor health for several months. Known generally as "Aunt Maude," she was born June 20, 1882, at Clarendon, Pa., the daughter of the late Samuel and Margaret Brecht. She had lived in the Jamestown area for the past 40 years. Her late husband was in the confectionery business in Jamestown and later worked for more than 20 years for the late John D. (Lambros.??) She is survived by a niece, Alice Ericson, Celoron; a half-sister, Mrs. Burr Burson, Montpeller, Ind. and several cousins and distant relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday from the Boyd Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.

Clauson Viola Bjork 1904 2004 Viola Bjork Clauson, 99, formerly of 642 Winsor St., died at 6:30 a.m., Sunday (May 2, 2004) in the Frewsburg Rest Home for Adults. She was born Oct. 7, 1904, in Jamestown, the daughter of William L. and Anna Louise Gilbert Bjork. She was a 1923 graduate of Jamestown High School, she had been employed by the City of Jamestown Treasurer's Office and the Board of Public Utilities, prior to retiring. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Marvin Community House, the Norden Women's Club, the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, and the American Association of Retired Persons. She is survived by two nephews: Eugene D. Diamond of Jamestown and Daniel B. Fellows of Bemus Point; and a niece, Anne Louise Galloway of Bemus Point. She was preceded in death by four sisters: Edna B. Anderson, Mildred B. Quaint, Ethel B. Fellows and Gladys B. Riley; and by a brother, William G. Bjork. Clay Claudine A. Ackerman 1910 2001 4/7/2001 - Claudine A Clay, 90, formerly of 22 City View Ave., died at 10:51 p.m. Saturday (April 7, 2001) in Heritage Village Health Care Center. She was born June 29, 1910, in Pike, N.Y., the daughter of Claude and Dora Ackerman. She was a graduate of Pike High School and a 1930 graduate of Houghton College. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed by Sears as head of the credit department for 25 years. She was later named executive director of the Marvin Community House for 10 years. She was a member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church, where she was very active in many aspects of the church. She was a Sunday school teacher, board member and a member of the senior citizens group. Surviving are a daughter, Eloise Carlson Putnam of Mayville; six grandchildren: Deborah Palmer of Ashville, Douglas Williams of West Seneca, Darlene Mietus of Sarasota, Fla., Dawn Whitehill of Stow, and William and Stephen Carlson, both of Mayville; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Clay, whom she married July 22, 1930, and who died May 29, 1971; a daughter, Donna Mae Williams, who died in 1986; five sisters: Katherine Ellis, Margaret Russell, Freda Eberson, Fannie Loder and Glendora Hodnett; and three brothers: Robert, Kenneth and Norman Ackerman. Richard Cline, 65, of 204 Sampson Street, Jamestown, died at 3:35 p.m. Friday(July 29, 1994) in WCA Hospital. Cline died as the result of a one-vehicle crash on Wednesday on the Washington Street Bridge near the Barrett Street off-ramp. He was born June 4, 1929, in Buffalo, the son of the late Gilbert Porter and Hazel Chase Cline. He was a retired truck driver for Don Gage, Inc. He served in the US Army from 1947 through 1956.
Surviving are his wife, the former Coralyn Anderson, with whom he observed his 41st wedding anniversary Set. 30, 1993; a son, David Cline, Jamestown; two daughters, Darla Cline, Jamestown and Christine Topolski, Madison, Ohio, six grandchildren and a brother, Thomas Cline, Buffalo.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Cathleen Mary Cline who died in 1957 and Cynthia Ann Cline who died in 1959.
A private service will be held on Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald E. Ray, WCA Hospital Chaplain, will officiate. Burial will be in Soldiers Circle, Lake View Cemetery. Visitation will not be observed.

Richard E. Colander, 28, of Bemus Point, a finishing grinder at the Marlin-Rockwell Corporation for 10 years, and a veteran of World War II, died suddenly at his home at 10 PM Monday. He was born in Jamestown, Dec. 4, 1923, the son of Fred J. and Elsie Carlstrom Colander. Mr. Colander was graduated from Jamestown High School with the class of 1942 and had resided in Jamestown until moving to Bemus Point four years ago. During World War II he served as a staff sergeant with the Thrid Army in France and Germany for three and a half years and was a member of the 94th Medical Gas Battalion of the U. S. Army Medical Corps. He received the Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Ribbon.
Mr. Colander was sgt. at arms and steward of the Marlin-Rockwell Local No. 338 UAW.CIO and was secretary of the M.R.C. Bowling League. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and also coached the church basketball team for several seasons. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary DeRosiar Colander; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Colander, Sr., of Jamestown; two brothers, Fred J. Colander, Jr., and John O. Colander, both of Jamestown; a twin sister, Mrs. Carl Wilzen of Jamestown. Funeral services will be held from Henderson-Lincoln Chapel at 3 PM Thursday. Rev. Paul A. Westerberg, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Soldiers' Circle, Lake View Cemetery.

Elof F. COLEBERG, 73, of 332 Steele Street, who was admitted at Jametwon General Hospital after being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes Jan 16, died at 10:45 p.m. Monday at the hospital. Mr. Coleberg and Axel A. Larson, 69, of the Steele Street address, were taken to the hospital at 2 p.m. in the police ambulance after being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes at their home.
Jamestown Fire Department's first aid crew administered oxygen to the stricken men, then removed them to the hospital. Mr. Larson was discharged from the hospital last Wednesday. Henderson-Lincoln is in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for Elof F. Coleberg, 72, of 332 Steele Street, who died yesterday in Jamestown General Hospital, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Henderson-Lincoln Funeral Home. George Lusk, assistant pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Cole Alice B. Carlson 1920 2003 Alice B.(CARLSON) COLE, 82, of 145 Chandler St., formerly of 255 Clyde Ave.
and Lorraine, Ohio, died at 9 p.m. Monday (March 10, 2003) in WCA Hospital.
An area resident most of her life, she was born June 4, 1920, in Jamestown,
the daughter of Rudolph O. and Anna Johnson Carlson. She is survived by her
friend, Arlene M. Wiedenhofer of Jamestown, who cared for her. She was
preceded in death by her husband, John S. Cole, whom she married June 15,
1957, and who died July 3, 1982

Cole John K.
1926 2002 3/5/2002 - John K. Cole, 75, of 1133 Wellman Road, died at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday (March 5, 2002) in the WCA Hospital. A Jamestown-area resident most of his life, he was born June 25, 1926, in Warren, the son of James C. and Evangeline Kendall Cole, Sr. He was a 38-year employee at MRC Bearings, retiring in June of 1988. He was a lay pastor for more than 30 years in many of the area’s churches. He was a 1944 graduate of Jamestown High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from Jan. 18, 1944, until his discharge on Feb. 15, 1946. He was a radio man serving aboard the USS Adams. He was a member of the Grace Chapel and also attended the Lakewood Baptist Church. He was a volunteer for the American Heart Association and was a co-founder of the Li-Lo-Li Camp, where he served on the camp committee, a boy’s counselor, caretaker, staff director, kitchen staff and security. He was devoted to reading and studying the Bible. He loved his grandchildren and had the privilege of baptizing his son’s four children. He is survived by his wife, Carol A. Anderson Cole, whom he married Oct. 23, 1946, in the Kidder Memorial United Methodist Church; three daughters: Sharyl M. Shields of Ashville, Kristine A. Taylor of Wheatfield, N.Y., and Karalea Bradish of Bemus Point; a son, John K. Cole of Jamestown; 12 grandchildren: Maureen Shields and Faith and Eleanor Cole, all of Jamestown, Jacob Shields of Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pa., Nora Shields of Ashville, Hope Cole of the University of Rochester, Rochester, Grace Cole of Gannon University, Erie, Emily Taylor of Niagara University, Niagara Falls, N.Y., Charles ‘‘C.J.’’ and John Taylor, both of Wheatfield, Grant and Harrison Bradish, both of Bemus Point; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emma Mae Bush of West Ellicott. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Ervin LeRoy Cole, who died in 1927, James C. Cole and Donald G. Cole, who both died in 1976. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. James Bottomley, lay pastor of the Grace Chapel, and the Rev. Daniel W. Cook, pastor of the Lakewood Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Coleson Pauline F. Davenport 1920 2001 6/8/2001 - Pauline F. Coleson, 81, of 1607 West Third St., died at 4:30 a.m. Friday (June 8, 2001) in WCA Hospital. An area resident most of her life, she was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Titusville, Pa., the daughter of Luther E. and Emma Jean VanGuilder Davenport. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for several years. Surviving are three sons: Conrad Coleson of Ashville, David Coleson of West Ellicott and Charles Coleson of Jamestown; three daughters: Valerie Furlow and Kathy Coleson, both of West Ellicott, and Candace Coleson of Ashville; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad E. Coleson, whom she married Jan. 16, 1936, and who died Aug. 7, 1997; nine sisters: Golda Munns, Beulah Cornell, Jennie Antonuccio, Mae Noble, Edith Kosht, Florence Davenport, Nina Grossman, Ruby Johnson and Bessie Wilson; and three brothers: Luther, Lawrence and Clifford Davenport. A private family service will be held in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. C. Gordon Bloomberg, visitation pastor of Christ First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Inurnment will be in the cremorial garden of Lake View Cemetery. Visitation will not be observed. 1. 5/18/2001 - Paul Mitchell Evans, 53, of 23 W. Third St., Covenant Manor, died Friday (May 18, 2001) in WCA Hospital. He was born June 15, 1947, in Fillmore, N.Y., the son of Florence M. Sortore Evans Tuttle and the late Alfred Evans. Besides his mother of Cuba, N.Y., he is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Grobaski Evans of Jamestown; a son, John Paul Tuttle of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Rodney Evans of Elmira, N.Y.; and a sister, Barbara Jean Rath of Hawaii He was preceded in death by his father, who died in 1962, and a daughter, Michelle Evan Tuttle, who died in 1991. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Migliore Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Ray, hospital chaplain, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. No visitation will be observed. Arrangements are by the Migliore Funeral Home.

Meadow Lane, Frewsburg, died at 7:56 p.m. Monday (March 3, 2003) in WCA
Hospital. A native of Jamestown, she was born Oct. 21, 1916, the daughter
of John A. and Vendla Anderson Johnson.She was the widow of Charles V.
Condon, whom she married Sept. 2, 1944, and who died Dec. 12, 1977.She had
been employed as a teacher in the Jamestown Public Schools system at Oak
Hill School for three years, Rogers Elementary School for two years and
Falconer Central School System, retiring in 1978 from the Kennedy Elementary
School after 16 years of service. She was a member of First Lutheran Church,
where she was active in the choir and was a soloist. She was past president
of the church's Altar Society and a 50-year member of the Ladies Aid. She
was also a member of Norden Women's Club, Thule Lodge, Vikings Lodge, Mount
Sinai-Mecca Order of the Eastern Star and a junior board member of Marvin
Community House.She is survived by a daughter, Sandra J. Strack of Berea,
Ohio; a granddaughter, Wendy Baran of Cleveland; four great-grandchildren;
and a brother, J. Robert Johnson of Jamestown
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter,
Belinda Condon.

Cook Leah Almstead 1895 1981 PJ: Feb., 1981: Fullerton, Calif: Leah Almstead Cook, formerly of Hunt Road, Jamestown, died Tuesday (Feb. 3, 1981) at the home of her daughter, Betty Stephenson of 3131 Laurel, Apt. 16, Fullerton. Mrs. Cook was born Sept. 12, 1895. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Jamestown and sang in the church choir many years; was a member of the Kiwanis Wives, and an active member of the Mozart Club. She was preceded in death by husband, Dr. William L. Cook, and a son, William Cook. Surviving are another daughter, Jayne Cook of Grand Junction, Colo.; six grandchildren, Mark Stephenson of the State of Washington, David Stephenson of Michigan, William and Bradley Stephenson of San Diego, Calif.; Leah Ellen Chandler of Aberdeen, N.C. and Larry Larson of Grand Junction, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren. Cook William L.
1891 1979 PJ: May, 1979: Word has been received of the death of Dr. William L. Cook, 88, a longtime optometrist in Jamestown. Cook died Sunday (May 27, 1979) in Placentia, Calif., where he had made his home with his daughter, Betty Stephenson, for the past three years. He had practiced optometry in Jamestown from 1920 to 1976. A life member of the Southwestern New York Optometric Society and a former society president, he had served on the optometric department of the State Board of Regents for several years.
Cook was a 32nd degree Mason, with a 50-year membership; former president of the Boy Scout Council of Jamestown; and a recipient of the scouting Silver Beaver award. He was the last living charter member of the Kiwanis Club and was president of that organization in 1945. Cook was a member of First Baptist Church, Jamestown, since 1920. Surviving are his wife, the former Leah Ellen Olmstead, whom he married Jan. 22, 1917; two daughters, Betty Stephenson of 200 Bay Meadows, Placentia, Calif.; and Jayne Cook of Grand Junction, Colo.; five grandsons, David Stephenson of Sterling Heights, Mich., the Rev. William Stephenson and Bradley Stephenson, both of San Diego, Calif., Mark Stephenson of Norco, Calif. and Larry Larsen of Grand Junction, Colo.; one granddaughter, Leah Chandler of Aberdeen, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren, and a sister, Marian Christopher of Rochester. He was preceded in death by a son, William L. Cook. Memorial services for the immediate family will be conducted by the Rev. William Stephenson Wednesday at the family residehce in Placentia, Calif. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, at the convenience of the family.

1923 2002 1/23/2002 - Lawrence R. Coon, 78, of 715 Falconer St., Lutheran Social Services, formerly of 8 Lincoln St., died Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) in WCA Hospital. He was born March 18, 1923, in Olean, the son of Lawrence W. and Lucille B. Strubel Coon. For many years he was employed by the former Dahlstrom Manufacturing, retiring in 1985. He is survived by a son, Larry L. Coon of Ogden, Kan.; four daughters: Georgia Carol Seigler of Nashua, N.H., Lucille Quick of Coudersport, Pa., Erma Nichols of Jamestown and Clarinda Wiess of Ulysses, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carol Ann Sandler of Olean. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Coon. The funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday in the Migliore Funeral Home. Elder Terry L. Nichols and Fred Nichols of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. 1910 1963 PJ: Sept., 1963: Harold Frederick Cooper, 53, of Shore Acres, Bemus Point, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday (Sept. 13, 1963) at his home. He was a route salesman for the Dairymen's League.Mr. Cooper received an award for 1959 from the Dairylea Milk Products for compiling 13 years of driving without an accident.
He was born Feb. 1, 1910 in Warren, Pa., the son of Philo and Jennie Cooper. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Air Corps in Germany and Italy.Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Violet D. Hultman Cooper; one son, Robert C. Cooper, Shore Acres; one daughter, Mrs. John Brunacini, Kennedy; one brother, Raymond D. Nutt, Mayville; and several nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Henderson-Lincoln Funeral Home. The Rev. Everett F. Spring, Mayville First Methodist Church pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.

1920 1974 PJ: Nov., 1974: Gerald M. Cornell, 54, of 220 Lake St., Elmhurst, RD 1, Jamestown, died at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 5, 1974) in the Meyer Memorial Hospital, Buffalo. He was a veteran of World War II. He had worked at Sans Corp. as a steamfitter. Mr. Cornell was born in the Town of Poland April 8, 1920, a son of Merton and Esther Erickson Cornell. He was a member of the Herman Kent Post, American Legion, of Celoron. Survivors are his wife, Barbara Besse Cornell; two sons, Gary Cornell of Lakewood and Dennis Cornell of Mayville; four daughters, Mrs. Linda Haskell of Bemus Point, Mrs. Sandra Woodard of Jamestown, Mrs. Beverly Anderson of Jamestown and Miss Cynthia Cornell of Mayville; his father of Jamestown; three brothers, Melvin Cornell of Newark, N.Y., Gordon Cornell of Stockton and Ray Cornell of Falconer; four sisters, Mrs. Marion Niles of Frewsburg, Mrs. Dorothy Mee of Cassadaga; Miss Virginia Cornell of Jamestown and Mrs. Shirley Fehlman of Gerry; five grandchildren. Cushman Marguerite E. Taylor 1869 1950 P.J. clipping dated Mar. 16, 1950: Mrs. Marguerite E. Taylor Cushman, 81, wife of John M. Cushman, of 178 South Main street, one of the leading intellectual and cultural leaders of Jamestown for a long period, died in the Allen Nursing Home at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mrs. Cushman, though inactive due to a 15-year illness, still kept up constant contact with the organizations with which she was associated. She was born Oct. 23, 1868 in Point of Rocks, Md., and during her 60 years' residence here, was a keen student, taking an active interest in civic affairs. Mrs. Cushman was often sought out for literary reference. During her early life, she was trained as a teacher and later spent several years doing private tutoring. Through this background, Mrs. Cushman acquired one of the finest reference libraries in this city. Mrs. Cushman was an associate member of the Unitarian Church, the first president and active in the formtion of the old Players Club. She was a member of the Governing Board of The Agnes Home for many years and a former member of the Browning Society. Mrs. Cushman wrote a comprehensive history of the Agnes Home for the 40th anniversary observance in 1946. Surviving her are her husband, one of Jamestown's veteran jewelers who has operated a shop on east Second street for many years; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Webster, Bedford, Mass., and Miss Harriet E. Cushman of Bozeman, Mont.; and three grandchildren, John, Robert and Winthrop Webster of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
