A native of Jamestown, she was born May 20, 1921, the daughter of Alvin J. and Mary Edwards Beeman. She was a 1940 graduate of Jamestown High School and was employed by Weber Knapp Co., and retired in 1981 from Nelson and Butts Greenhouse, where she had been employed 14 years. She was a member of Stillwater United Methodist Church, the Violet Club and the Jamestown Star Rebekah Lodge 182, where she served as Past Noble Grand, past District Deputy President, past Inside Guard of New York State Assembly, and past Chief Matriak of the Chautauqua Ladies Incampment Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons: Gary J. Sagurney of Lakewood and Timothy B. Sagurney of Jamestown; three grandson: Matthew R. Sagurney of Buffalo, Jay Sagurney of Lakewood and Bryan T. Sagurney of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Beeman. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul H. Samuelson, Jr.; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Saxton, Miss Nancy Samuelson and Mrs. Ronald Hepler; eight grandchildren; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Turner Proper. Surviving are a daughter, Anna Marie Olson of Jamestown; a son, WIlliam W. Boyles of Sugar Grove, Pa.; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Warren Proper, Townville, Pa. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Charleene Shoup, who died in 1976. No funeral service or visitation will be observed. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Hanson Samuelson. He was confirmed in the First Lutheran Church, Jamestown. Surviving are his wife, Margaret J. Proper Samuelson; three daughters, Ellen J. Saxton, Linda S. Hepler and Nancy R. Samuelson; a son, Paul R. Samuelson, Jr.; eight grandchildren and a brother, Robert H. Samuelson, all of Jamestown, two step-children, Anna M. Olson, Jamestown, and William W. An area resident since 1910, he was born Aug. 1, 1907, in Halmsted, Halland, Sweden, the daughter of Karl M. and Elin A. Ahlstrom Johnson. During World War II, she was employed by the former Steel Partition Co. She was confirmed May 22, 1922, in the former Zion Mission Church and had formerly been active with the Ladies Aide Society of the Salvation Army. She enjoyed crocheting and flower gardening. She is survived by three sons: Carl S. and Jack H. Samuelson, both of Bemus Point and Brian R. Samuelson of Sun City West, Ariz.; two daughters: Elsie E. Samuelson and Lois M. Schauman, both of Jamestown; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Ralg of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her husband, P. Samuelson, whom she married Dec. 31, 1943; two sons Robert E. and Terry A. Samuelson,of Jamestown,two daughters, Beverly A. Alexander, of Orlando, Fla., and Robin A. Billigen of Slinger, Wisc., nine grandhildren, and a sister, Anne Overstreet of Florida. Sandbloom, 71, of 609 7th Street, formerly of 125 William Street, Jamestown, died at 2:07 a.m. Friday(July 29, 1994) in Veterans Administration Hospital, Buffalo. He was born July 9, 1923, in Jamestown, the son of the late Gust and Jennie Johnson Sandbloom. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served from Sept. 13, 1942, to Nov. 10, 1945 in the Asiati-Pacific and the European-African theaters of war. He was active in the Phillipine liberation, earning a Bronze Star. Sandbloom operated the former Kendall Gas Station at 130 Baker Street, for 23 years, the North Main Arco Gas Station at Ninth and Main Streets and was a truck driver for R&L Trucking before his retirement. He was a life member of the John W. Tiffany Post 53 VFW, Henry Mosher Post 638 American Legion, Falconer, and Robert W. Illig, Chapter 47 Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of War Vets Recreation, Thule Lodge, and the Kasciuko Polish Club of Dunkirk. Surviving are three daughters; Susan K. Jones and Jeryl Lynn Stearns, both of Jamestown, and Deborah Lee Montana of Seattle; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one brother, Harold Sandbloom of Jamestown and his companion, Joyce B. Bush, who cared for Sandbloom. He was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Mitchell, who died Feb. 10, 1994. The funeral is at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. He was a member of First Covenant Church, Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge 145 F&AM and the Kiwanis of Pinellas Park. He was past president of Jamestown Kiwanis and past director of the Boys and Girls Club and the Salvation Army. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Wright Sanford, whom he married May 22, 1954; two daughters: Lynn S. Dole of Columbus, Ind., and Kim S. Lasher of Lakewood; a son, Craig D. Sanford of Henrietta, N.Y.; seven grandchildren: Olivia R and Ethan B. Dole of Columbus, Christine E., Hillary A. and Megan J. Lasher, all of Lakewood, and Jessica L. and Jonathan D. He operated a local grocery store for 34 years and was employed by Tillitson Furniture Co., retiring in 1965 as a finishing foreman. Following his retirement, he was self employed at Sarro's Furniture Repair mostly for Sears and Wellman Brothers Furniture for 20 years. He was one of the founding members of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.He is survived by his wife, Evangeline N. Joanethis Sarro, whom he married Sept. 6, 1936, in Jamestown; two sons: Robert N. Sarro of Webster, N.Y., and William C. Sarro of Germantown, Tenn.; two grandchildren: Laura K. Maloney of Webster and Paul N. Sarro of Rochester; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Poplos; and two brothers: George and Peter Sarro. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The Rev. He was born July 16, 1915, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Herbert H. and Rose Gedeon Schulte. An Eagle Scout, he graduated from West Tech High School in Cleveland, and from Ohio State University in 1938 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army with campaigns beginning in Australia and New Guinea and ending with the landing at Lingayen Gulf and the capture of Manila. A member of First Presbyterian Church, he had served as an elder, a deacon, a member of the Long Range Planning Committee, and was on the Steering Committee of the church’s 1990 Building Expansion Campaign. He was an active member of the Adult Fellowship Group. He is survived by his wife, Rachel Hall Schulte, whom he married August 3, 1941; two daughters: Gayle C. Schulte of Jamestown, and Dr. Marilyn S. Whittemore of Germantown, Tenn.; a grandson, Dr. John Russell Whittemore of Memphis, Tenn.; and a sister, Carol S. Jones of Brentwood, California. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cross-stitch and especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She is survived by a son, Daniel P. Seaton of Dewittville; two daughters, Diane L. Seaton of Mayville and Sindy L. Reading of West Seneca, N.Y.; three grandchildren: Sara and Ashley Seaton, both of Mayville, and Spencer Reading of West Seneca; and a brother, Richard M. A Morganton resident since 1973, she had been employed as an elementary school teacher and remedial reading specialist in the Southwestern Central School District and later taught school in the Rutherfordton County School System until retirement. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Forest City, N.C., and the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Lakewood. Surviving are two daughters: Kay Yost of Wallingford, Pa., and Ann Woodfield of Pinebluff, N.C.; four grandchildren: Karen Yost Byerly, Derek Yost, Marcia Woodfield and Lisa Eaton; and one great-grandchild. She was a 1926 graduate of Jamestown High School, and was a also a graduate of the Walcourt School for Girls in Cayuga, N.Y. Prior to retiring, she had been a self-employed interior decorator, antique appraiser and was a qualified estate appraiser. In earlier years she had been employed by Wellman Bros. Furniture in Jamestown, Gold Eagle in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Colonial Art Co. in Pittsburgh. Following her retirement, she had worked in the Athenaeum Hotel in Chautauqua Institution during the summer season. A member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1923, she was also a member of the Heritage Foundation, Marvin Community House, Fenton Historical Society and the Ross Mills Cemetery Association. In earlier years she had been active in Republican Party politics, serving as president of the Young Women’s Republican Club of Jamestown, chairperson of the 8th Judicial District New York State Young Republican Clubs, and served as a hostess at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in 1940. She is survived by two sons: George Ross Sherwood of Lakewood and Wilson Stuart Sherwood Jr. of Erie; a daughter, Barbara Anne Schuckers of Ashville; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren. Mrs. Sloan was a graduate of Panama High School and Fredonia Normal School. During her early life she was a teacher in many of the local schools. Surviving are a daughter, Marlene A. Taylor, with whom she made her home; two sons, Merwyn C. Sloan of Gerry and James A. Sloan of Ashville; four grandchildren; Suzanne Bargar and Todd Taylor, both of Jamestown, Deanna Sloan of Ashville and Jason Straight of Gerry; three great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Kenneth Meyer of Ashville, and a half-sister, Betty Bush of Ashville. A Blockville area resident all his life, he was born Feb. 27, 1912 in the Town of Harmony, son of John H. and Elizabeth Hodges Sloan. He was graduated from Chautauqua Central School. He and his wife, the former Jennie Meyer, were married in Kennedy on Nov. 16, 1935. Mr. Sloan was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church of Blockville and Harmony Lodge 547, IOOF, of Ashville. At the time of his death, he served as treasurer of Harmony Conservation Club. He was a former member of the Ashville Fire Dept. Survivors, in addition to his wife include: a daughter, Mrs. Barry Taylor, Blockville: two sons, Merwin C. Sloan, Greenhurst, James A. Sloan, Blockville; a granddaughter, Suzanne G. Sloan, Greenhurst; two grandsons, Todd D. Taylor and James L. Cederquist, Blockville; his mother, Mrs. John H. Sloan, Sr., Blockville and Zephyr Hills, Fla., a sister, Mrs Everton Green of Blockville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wesnesday in powers Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas O. For many years he was a partner in H&H Metal Specialties, and following retirement was employed part time by Rand Machine until February 2000. He was a member of the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion, the War Vets and the Ellery Memorial Post 947 VFW. Kelly loved his grandsons very much, and also loved to feed and water the birds. He is survived by his wife, Jean Trummer Swanson, whom he married June 19, 1948; a son, Ronald M. Swanson of Jamestown; two grandsons: Ronald M. She will be remembered for good-hearted willingness to always help others. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters: Barbara J. Swanson of Cranberry Township, Pa.; 14 grandchildren: Brenda Johnson of Ashville, Scott Chall of Oviedo, Fla., Mark and William Nelson and Karen Davis, all of Frewsburg, Tom Nelson, Susan Mlacker and Taylor Swanson, all of Jamestown, Kristy Adams of Sumter, S.C., Jill Rexroad of Oak Ridge, N.J., Scott Swanson of Uniontown, Ohio, Jeremy Swanson of Bemus Point, Jennifer Peters of Lakewood and Bridget Swanson of Bloomington, Ind.; 25 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Allen of Lady Lake, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Swanson, whom she married June 22, 1931, and who died Sept. 29, 1976; a brother, Laverne Allen; and a sister, Florence Allen. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Wesley L. Hamlin, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Swanson, 80, of the Lindgren Apartments, 132 Aldren Avenue, Jamestown, formerly of 26 Clyde Ave., died at 6:00p.m. Sunday(Sept. 12, 1976), in WCA Hospital. A veteran of World War I, he served in the U.S. Army in England and France. Prior to his retirement, he had been proprietor of the Globe Photo Co. for 46 years. Born in Tidioute, PA., April 11, 1896, the son of John and Mary E. Johnson Swanson, he had been an area resident most of his life. Mr. Johnson was a member of the First Covenant Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Mildred Anderson, with whom he observed their 54th wedding anniversary June 14, 1976; a daughter, Mrs. Donald L. Grummon of East Lansing, Mich.; a son, Elliott L. Swanson, Jr. of Sidney, Australia, three grandsons, and a sister, Mrs. John T. Cowing of Lakewood. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard G. and Arthur Swanson. | Swanson | Harold T. | 1912 | 2003 | BETHANY, Okla. - Harold T. Swanson, 91, died Wednesday (Aug. 27, 2003). He was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Gerry, the son of Albert and Wilhelmina Swanson. He retired from Honeywell in Denver in 1977. Along with his wife, Isabel, he spent summers in Jamestown and winters in Mesa, Ariz., until 1999 when they moved to Bethany. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Isabel, of Bethany; a son, Howard of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a daughters: Janice Present of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Barbara McAtee of Parkersburg, W.Va.; six grandchildren: Sharyn Soderlund, Cynthia Dilts, Chris Olsen, Mark and Mike Swanson, and Kimberly Frederick; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Carlson of Gerry. A memorial service was held Sept. 3 in the Church of The Savior in Oklahoma City. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Jamestown. |

He was born July 12, 1909, in Deluth, Minn., the son of Victor and Amanda Anderson Swanson. He attended Kiantone School and Frewsburg Central School. He had been employed by Salsbury Axel Company, former Automatic Voting Machine and the former Crescent Tool. Along with his father and brother, he had also owned and operated a farm in Kiantone for 50 years. He retired from farming in 1981. He was one of the original members of the Kiantone Volunteer Fire Department, and an active member of the Kiantone, Kennedy and Frewsburg Senior Citizens until 1999. The family moved to Kiantone from Zim, Minn., in 1919 where he lived until his death. His family immigrated from Blekinge, Sweden. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maxine Ross Swanson; two daughters: Barbara Clark of Kiantone and Joann Swanson of Brooklyn; a son, Russell Swanson of South Dayton; two grandsons: Russell Swanson II of Brooklyn and Tan Swanson of Deltona, Fla.; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Johnson of Jamestown. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Edward Swanson, who died in 1969, and Carl Swanson, who died in 1998; and a grandson, David Clark, who died in 1977. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg. The Rev. James H. Mitchener Jr., retired pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. | Swanson | Mildred E. | Patton | 1926 | 2003 | ASHVILLE - Mildred E. Swanson, 76, of the Baker Street Estates, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday (July 23, 2003). An area resident most of her life, she was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Corry, Pa.In earlier years, she had been employed by the Hotel Jamestown and later as a waitress by the Triangle Restaurant. She worked for more than 15 years for Jamestown Laminating, retiring as foreman of the repair department. More recently and until this past May, she had been a leader of water aerobics groups at both the Turner Center at Chautauqua and at Camp Chautauqua. A member of the Watts Flats United Methodist Church, she also belonged to the Lakewood Memorial Post 1286 American Legion Auxiliary, where she had served as sergeant at arms, Lakewood Rod and Gun Auxiliary, Lakewood-Celoron Moose Auxiliary and the Chautauqua Lake Fishing Association. A loving mother and grandmother, she enjoyed doing everything with her family, especially her annual Christmas shopping trip with her daughters. For many years, she and her husband enjoyed winters in Myrtle Beach and Yuma, Ariz. She will always be remembered for her hugs, and as the devoted caretaker of her husband for the last nine years. Surviving are her husband, Richard T. Swanson, whom she married June 15, 1963; six daughters: Barbara Stormer of Wellsville, Penny Roberts, Robin DuVall and Patti Ryan, all of Ashville, and Marsha Gastol and Virginia Johnson, both of Lakewood; two sons: Raymond Roos of Salamanca and Michael Roos of Massachusetts; a stepdaughter, Shari Swanson of Westfield; a stepson, Roger Swanson of Sinclairville; 18 grandchildren: Vicky Stormer and Katie Allen, both of Wellsville, Judi Johnson of Madison, Ohio, Theresa Roberts, Sandra Fredenburg, Jennifer Gastol, Debra Marotto and Derek Ryan, all of Ashville, Nathan Gastol of Seattle, Wash., Kevin Gastol of Pittsburgh, Paul DuVall Jr. of Falconer, Justin Ryan of Florida, Matthew, David and Amber Johnson, all of Lakewood, Anthony and Alicia Tyger of Salamanca, and Michelle Neubauer of Delaware; 17 great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and a sister, Elaine LeRoy of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Patton; mother, Florence Raymond Patton Watson; stepfather, Edwin Watson; and two brothers: Robert and Ed Watson. Swanson, 89, of Heritage Green Health Care Center, formerly of 1905 Shadyside Road, Lakewood, died at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) in WCA Hospital. A Lakewood resident for more than 45 years, she was born Nov. 30, 1911, in Coatbridge, Scotland, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Johnston Fullerton. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed by Merrill Lynch and also Goodbody and Company as a financial secretary and earlier had worked for the Bank of Jamestown. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Thule Lodge 127 Vasa Order of America, Marvin Community House, Norden Women’s Club and Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. Surviving are several cousins in Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph C. Swanson, whom she married in 1931, and who died in 1969; and a brother. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Angus M. Watkins, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
