Early settlers in the Town of Greene taken from "1874 History of Chenango & Madison Counties, NY" by James H Smith; pub. 1880. Tried to use year, where stated, person and where they were from.
GREENE was erected March 15, 1798 from Union, Broome county and Jericho (now Bainbridge), both then in Tioga county.
1792
first settler - Stephen KETHCUM, Ballston Spa, Saratoga Co.
Simon BARNETT - French refugee parents; born West Indies; from Butternuts, Otsego Co

Malchi TREAT and William M MORRIS got land patents in 1787 or '8, a tract of 15,835 acres on east side of the Chenango, which was sub-divided in 1792 by Capt. John HARRIS, surveyor, into about 150 lots of various sizes, exclusive of the French village lot. In 1795 their leader, M. de Bo Lyne drowned and the French settlement moved to Bradford, Pa. Their lands in Greene reverted to original patentees.
