POTTER, LYONS

Christopher Brennan Tue Feb 1 21:31:11 2000
I am attempting to trace a maternal line in Chenango County. My great grandfather, George Congress Clark married a woman named Mary Potter. According to her death certificate, her father was Benjamin Potter, her mother Harriett Lyons. The 1865 NYS census indicates that Mary Potter was born in "Shinango" County.

Since Mary Potter was born in 1839 state vital records are not a good source. It would appear (if my source is accurate) that Benjamin Potter (her father) was a resident in Oxford. Are there any churches in Oxford that date back to before 1839? If so, do they still have their registers?
I would appreciate knowing the particulars of any churches close to Oxford that might be worth contacting. Any cemeteries in the area (associated with churches or otherwise) would also be helpful.
Thank you! - Chris Brennan - Cristoir@aol.com

MERICLE, KENYON, GRUMMOND, GRUMMONS, SMITH, BARROWS

Bill Grummons Sun Feb 13 07:03:54 2000
One of the biggest problems I have faced in the search for my kinfolk seems to be they moved about so fast they were always one jump ahead of the census takers. About all they ever left behind were their daughters. For this reason, I am going to attempt a different ploy. One of my earliest relatives was Nathaniel GRUMMOND, bn: 5 June 1788. He settled in German, Cortland County, NY. He died there 3 April 1872. His wife was Lydia WENTWORTH, bn: December 28 1788 and died in German 25 April 1870. Up until now, all else I knew about them is they had one son, Ferdinand Grommon [sic] buried in the plot next to them. He died 15 Feb 1832, at the age of 22 years. These three people are buried behind the Church in Pitcher, Chanango County, NY, less then six miles from German, in Cortland County. I have since learned there were other children growing up at the home in German.
Emily Grummons, was born in German, abt 1817. She married Michael A. Mericle date unknown. What is known, he died 25 August 1872 at the young age of 54 years Henry C, Mericle, bn 26 May 1849 died young Lydia A. Mericle bn 26 June 1849 Milford D Mericle bn 30 Nov 1846 died 03 June 1860

William GRUMMONS was bn: 1819 in Otsego County before the family reached German, NY. On 20 June 1847, he wed Eliza Kenyon, age 25, daughter of Asa Kenyon at the Church at Pitcher. The ceremony performed by the Rev. Elijah Beebe. William Milford Grummons, bn: 1849 Eliza Grummons, bn 1850 Adalpo ??? bn: 1854

Sally Grummonds [sic] was also born in German in 1819. She was to become the 2nd wife of Peter Smith, bn. 31 October 1814 and died 26 July 1884. Sally died 24 June1896. Peter and Sally are both buried behind the Baptist Church in Cincinnatus Cortland County, NY. Allen Smith, bn 24 April 1849. Owned a farm in Brackel, and a store in Cincinnatus. William N. Smith, no other data.
Nathaniel Grummons, Jr., bn abt. 1827 in German first married Harriet Burrows, he was 23 years old, Harriet was 25 years old. Harriet died at the age of 29 years, in 1860, leaving behind one child, Fredrick W. Grummond, bn. in 1854 in Kittellville, Chanango County, NY. Soon after Fredrick's mother died he went to live with his grandparents in McDonough, NY. Four years later, Nathaniel Grummond remarried and moved to Binghamton, Broome County, NY. Thank you , Bill Grummons, IBSSG, Rootsweb Sponsor

NEWELL LORD

Val Barney Fri Mar 17 19:12:48 2000
I have a George E NEWELL b April 17, 1868 in Clinton, Oneida Cnty, New York to Orrin W NEWELL and Martha Lord NEWELL. He is the 5th child of 6. Others are Illini, Minnie, Ida, Marcelia (Celia)Almina and Winnie Louisa.
I also have a picture of a Horace NEWELL, taken in Earlville, Madison Cnty, NY that says "Uncle Horace", I believe in Ida's handwriting, which would make him Orrin's bro or Uncle.
In the 1850 Census there is a Horace NEWELL b 1798 with wife Mary Ann and three children. Also a Horace NEWELL b 1838 (12 yrs old) in Plymouth Town, next to Pharsalia where Martha LORD was born. If anyone has this census, could you tell me what family this 12 year old is living with?
Is there anyone out there that can help me find any data on George's birth, I am hitting a brick wall on Orrin (Orin) and his parents.
Thanks, Val dignity@cet.com
