ST. JOHN

David Veh Sat Jul 1 07:49:14 2000
I am looking for info on the ST. JOHN surname. I have a lead that my 3rd g-grandmother's father was Nathan ST. JOHN and she was born in Otsego Co. However, I found a Nathan ST. JOHN listed in the 1869-70 Town of Afton Directory and was wondering if this could be the one I am looking for; it also lists him as having a Ninevah, Broome Co address. Is it possible that this might be my Nathan since Chenango, Otsego & Broome Counties all meet in this area?
My ancestor's name was Lucinda (Lucy) ST. JOHN,b. abt 1815, and married John C. COUSE about 1838. John & Lucy lived most of their lives in the Nanticoke, Broome Co, area and are buried in the Glen Aubrey Cemetery. John died 16 Mar 1880 and Lucy died on 5 May 1900. They had 8 children: Lavina, Orville E, Mary, Edgar Orson, William, Della, Leroy, & Laffayette between 1839 -1856. Edgar ORSON married Helen OLIVER which continues the direct line to me.
If anyone can answer my question or give me any additional info on this line, I would appreciate it.

After much searching, I have finally found my ancestor, Hely STODDARD, in the 1840 NY Chenango Co census in McDonough. I also found him in the 1830 NY Deleware Co census in Franklin, listed as Helia STODDART. He and his wife "Betsey" Elizabeth BATES, who is also supposed to have been born in NY (both circa 1802) moved to WI, settling in Dodge Co first and later in Vernon Co. I have been searching for months/years for where in NY he was from, and am glad to have found this trace of him! Now, of course, I'd like to find more :-) Any records of him in the county - wills, land deeds, etc. Any records of his wife or her family or their marriage. I will say his name gets spelled so many different ways... in addition to the ways I've mentioned, it also has been spelled as Hela and Healey (and probably more ways I haven't found yet). So, if anyone connects with these STODDARDs and BATES please let me hear from you!!! Also, leads on where to search for the records I need would be great! Thanks...
