I think I might have ancestors in what is now the southwest section of Chenango County. I know that I have ancestors in Broome County, and believe some of them came from where Cincinnatus is. My Truman Comstock SMITH and Hannah Henrietta CONRAD came from there.
I belive that Truman's father might very well have been Enoch SMITH, born in RI, but living most or much of his life in or near Cincinnatus NY, perhaps in what is now Chenango County. Truman's mother may have been Eunice COMSTOCK, born in Connecticut. She had a brother named Truman COMSTOCK.
This is just an educated hunch. I am not even certain where in Broome County these SMITHs lived. I suspect, from looking at the map, that they perhaps lived in the north part of the county. Just wondering if there might be signs of these folks in Chenango county?

Seeking information on the famous western explorer Jedediah Strong SMITH, b. in Jericho, Bainbridge, Chenango, either June 24, 1798, or Jan. 6, 1799. Died 1831. Family tradition says that he was a descendant of Jedediah SMITH, Granville, Hampden, Massachusetts, pastor until 1776, m. Sarah COOK; oldest son Jedediah II m. Rooda (Rhoda?) HUBBARD 12 Jan. 1775 and moved to Blandford, Hampden, Massachusetts, where he was a judge. Some genealogies list Jedediah Strong SMITH as the son of Jedediah SMITH and Sally STRONG, and some of those show this Jedediah as the son of Seth SMITH. Your GenWeb site shows a Col. Seth SMITH as an original settler in 1784, and a Jedeiah [sic] SMITH moving to Bainbridge in 1795 from "New England States." I seek to establish whether this Jedediah was the son of Jedediah II and the father of Jedediah Strong SMITH. Any help in untangling this would be gratefully appreciated. I am a descendant of Jedediah I by his youngest son Courtland and will share information.

My 3-great grandmother, Mary SUTPHEN, nee Higinbotham, was the (a?) wife of Thomas SOUTHWORTH of Sherburne, Chenango County. They had two daughters, Harriet and Caroline, who were half sisters to my 2 great grandfather Charles H. SUTPHEN. In the 1850 Chenango census, Thomas, age 77, was living with his daughter Caroline Caulkins, Mary apparently having passed on. I am seeking additional information on this family, especially when Mary died and where Mary and Thomas are buried..

In doing research on my ancestor, Alice ACKLEY (SOULE, wf of Emory SOULE, below), I came across the will of Daniel C. ACKLEY (b 18 May 1804, d 18 Jan 1864, buried in Rhode Island Cemetery, Lincklaen, Chenango Co., NY). He and his wife Emily, died without any living heirs. Like many other wills, it lists the hiers, however, it fails to list relationships, thus raising more questions than it answers! I've listed below the heirs and next of kin named in the will.
Next of kin listed in the will of Daniel C. ACKLEY:
Asa Ackley Calvin Ackley Eliza Ackley John Ackley Lucy Ackley Nathan Ackley Emily Ackley (the widow) Daniel Bentley Ezra Bentley Harriet Bentley Lucy Bentley Charles Lathrop Eliza Lathrop Moses Lathrop Rufus Lathrop Alice Souls Polly SpringerIf these names turn up in your research, and (especially) if you know how they might be related to Daniel C. or any others in this list, please let me know! This has been eating away at me for some time now (I think you all know that feeling!) Wish you luck in your research ...

To: Robert A. HOWE re. your great grandfather. My apologies for getting so many "greats" in my previous response. I realize now, there should have been only one. Your great grandfather was a brother to my great grandfather. I am anxious to hear from you as there is so much to tell you. I presume your grandfather was the former Mayor of Santa Cruz, California. Did you know that at one time he had a beautiful sister Stella? I believe she was older than Fred and may have died. John P. wrote home to his father about his concern for her health. I would love to know what happened to her. Please talk to me; I'm sure we have much to talk about.

Am trying to trace ROSE and NEWTON relationship. My gr grandfather, Sewell Leonard NEWTON was placed in the care of Charlotte Eliza ROSE after his mother, Sarah HAMMOND d in childbirth. Tracing the family of Elijah VICKERY (1759-1821) and wife Polly BEEBE (1764-1843) originally from Taunton MA. At least three children relocated with them: Augustus and wife Lydia CHURCHILL, Hannah and Polly. Revolutionary war file says that Hannah married someone surname VAON and Polly married someone surname BLOWERS. Augustus VICKERY removed to Steuben County with children Nathaniel VICKERY and Lorenda VICKERY circa 1830. Lorenda married Hiram WHITE, also believed to be from Chenango Co. Evidently there was a community of Chenango Co. people who migrated together to Troupsville, Steuben Co. with a group of Baptists led by Rev. Fuller. One child of Augustus and Lydia VICKERY, also named Augustus, remained in Smithville and married Angeline RORAPAUGH, having at least one son, Orin who died young. Any information welcome.
