A letter dated 5 March 1816 from my ancestor, Jonathan Sprague and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth, is addressed to Mr. Joseph Guthrie Sherburn, Chenango, County, New York, and speaks of Jonathan's dissatisfaction with the handling (expenses) charged against the estate of James Guthrie, whose estate was probated in Cuyahoga County, Ohio in 1813. Further research indicates that Jonathan and Elizabeth had the care of one Bula Guthrie, who apparently was the child of James Guthrie. The letter mentions "your brother John and Mr. Tilly Lynde". There was also an estate for a David Guthrie. Unfortunately, only the index is extant.
Bula later married a William SLY in Huron County, Ohio. Anything sound familiar to anyone? Thanks.

Where might I find historical information about the railroad that ran from Binghampton, NY to Utica during the 1870's? My great grandfather, Timothy Hayes, from Ireland, worked on that road in the 1870's. Looking at a current RR Map the line is now the New York and Susquehanna and Western RR. It runs from Binhampton thru Chenango Forks, Norwich, Sherburne, Cassville and into Utica. My great grandparents lived in Norwich from 1859 thru 1878 and they show up in census reports in that town; however, ggf was naturalized in Utica and one of the eleven children was baptized in Utica, which leads me to believe they may have moved up and down that rail line. I live in Onondaga Co., NY, but am researching Roswell HUBBARD, who I am told carved some of the truly lovely gravestones throughout southern Onondaga Co. and adjacent areas ca 1808-1830. If anyone knows about Mr. Hubbard of Sherburne, particularly his work, or where I can find out more about him, I would be very grateful. Please e-mail me. I am compiling a virtual tour of our co.'s graveyards, and find his folk-art gravestones fascinating.

I'm looking for any information on Samuel CHILSON, who was in the 1810 census of Chenango Co. NY. I believe he is the father of my Thomas Ensign CHILSON b. around 1812-1814 in NY. This family later moved to PA, Ohio, Iowa, and Minn. Also I'm looking for the parents of Thomas Ensign CHILSON'S wife, Elizabeth MERRITT. I believe that Charles MERRITT is her father but would like to find some evidence. Charles MERRITT was also in Chenango Co. NY in the 1810 census. These families The CHILSONS, MERRITTS, GILBERTS, GREENS, seemed to move together. If anyone can help me with any information I would appreciate it.
Sincerely, Roger A. Chilson
