TOBEY - MAT(T)HEWSON

Julie Rice Thu Oct 7 21:15:20 1999
Have managed to complete the links of Eliza (Elizabeth) A. TOBEY and Charles Matthewson who marry in Smyrna in 1834 and have my great-grandfather Otis Wing Matthewson in 1837 in Smyrna. I know that Eliza dies in 1855 and Charles in 1854. There are a number of other children from the marriage (listed in an earlier Matthewson post) but to date I have found no record as to what happened to them. Eliza's parents, Temperance Wing and John Pope Tobey continue to survive, living in Smyrna until 1888 when they die at the ages of 97 (Temperance) and 98 (John Pope). Did they raise the children? Did one of her siblings raise the children? Who was Charles Mat(t)hewson and where did he come from? Was he connected to the other Mathewson families in the area at that time? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I will be posting the Matthewson line for Otis Wing Matthewson on the Thomas Tobey web page in the next several weeks. That web page is located at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~explor10/tobey.htm. This link has much information about the Smyrna area and is worth searching if you have a Tobey connection. Julie Rice

Seeking information on family of Edwin R. ALBERTI (born 1798 PA)and wife Ernestine STRONG (born 1811 NY) who married on 5 October 1841 in Chenango County, New York. By 1850 they moved to Nassau County, Florida, where Edwin is listed as a Mill Proprietor. In 1855 they own 200 acres in Nassau Co., Florida. Marriage records show that they may have had about 10 children several of whom should have been born in NY 1841-1850. Since there are no children with them in 1850 Florida, hypothesis is that the children were with relatives in Chenango County, NY. Edwin may have moved to New York with his step-mother Anna Maria Shipley after his father Dr. George R. Alberti died in 1838. Any help most appreciated. I will be most happy to share Alberti information back to 1754. I am Nancy at GNkapper@cs.com

It is sad but that is all that I know about her. In the census of 1830, there were no Bigsbys listed. I guess that she was born around 1815. The only clue so far was that in the Chenango Co. census of 1830, there was a Peter Bigsby listed with a daughter, aged 5 to 10.

GARLAND - NEEVES

JoAnn Cantrell Sat Dec 11 11:44:54 1999
Still looking for information on Effie C. GARLAND who according to death orbituary was born in Sherbourn, Chenago co. NY on 19 Mar. 1841. Effie married James P. JOHNSTON in McLean co. ILL in 1861. She died in MO in 1928. On the death certificate of James K or J GARLAND, he was born in Sherburn Chenago co. NY in 1844. Were these two siblings? The parents of James were listed as James GARLAND and Eliza NEEVES Garland. But these two have not been found on any census or vital record. The only GARLAND family listed in Chenago co. NY in 1840 and 1850 was Erasmus Darwin GARLAND and his family. Effie and James don't appear to be chldren of this family. James GARLAND jr. enlisted in the Civil War from Middlefield, NY, served in the NY 121st. He later lived in Paris NY, Utica NY and died in Buffalo, NY in 1914. If James is a siblilng to Effie, why didn't he go west when she did ? Any help on the parents of Effie or James would be greatly appreciated.

SERGEANT - HALE - SISSON - DEFOREST - MARVIN

Penny Kresl Thu Dec 16 14:55:16 1999
LINK: Penny's Sergeant/Sargent Genealogy Page URL: http://www.elknet.net/kresl/Penny/penny.html Looking for all Sargent descendants from the family of Samuel SERGEANT and Catherine MARVIN in New Berlin, and his younger brother, Thomas SERGEANT(my gggg) and his wife Sarah (SISSON) DEFOREST. This was a (2) marriage for both Sarah and Thomas. He reportedly was m. to a Unknown SHEFFIELD and her to a William Deforest. Thomas later crossed the Unadilla River by 1820 and shows up in Butternuts township in Otsego Co. Both men had many descendant's. I have a very large data base of Otsego and Chenango Co families(over 3,000) While my online Gedcom is outdated, my Genealogy Program on my desktop is more Current. I haven't downloaded it yet to my site but will soon. These are very old families and settled in the New Berlin area as early as 1795.

Please check this website for any related names that could be a relation..... Thanx, Penny Kresl.

SPRINGER

Joanne Thu Dec 16 15:43:52 1999
Looking for info on Godfrey/Godfree SPRINGER (b)1769 Tiverton, RI (d) 1842 OXFORD or NORWICH, NY. Have found only an 1830 census and a probate re: his death (submitted by an Owen Phillips). Cannot find any cemetery record for him in Oxford/Norwich. Do not know why he was living in NY at this time! His wife, Phebe Wilcox, died in Tiverton in 1825. 1830 Census leads me to believe he either remarried someone older than him and moved to Chenango Cty., or he may have gone to live with an older, single sister (name unknown). Also residing in same household: a male and a female aged between 20-30. Suspect a Barton SPRINGER of Norwich in 1850 Census could have been related....possibly a son or nephew. He left a son Thomas in Tiverton and a son Godfrey in Petersburgh, NY area. Can anyone help me find why he was in Chenango Cty between 1830 and 1842? Thanx in advance!.

WELLS - McCALL

Laura Sullivan Fri Dec 17 11:05:37 1999
I'm looking for information on the Asa Wells family of Oxford, Chenango County, New York. I believe Asa was born about 1790 in Massaschusetts. He died November 2, 1860 in Columbia County, Wisconsin. He married a woman named Elizabeth (Betsey) he was also born in Massachusetts about 1791. She died after June 1, 1870 in Springvale, Columbia County, Wisconsin. This couple had about ten children. I have information on the following: 1. Louisa Wells b. April 20, 1829 in Oxford, Chenango County, Wisconsin, d. May 25, 1884 in Columbia County Wisconsin, m. Ervin McCall April 2, 1855 in Columbia County, Wisconsin. 2. Mary A. Wells b. abt 1831 in Oxford, Chenango County, New York. 3. Charlotte Wells b. abt 1835 in Oxford Chenango County, Wisconsin. 4. Eli J. Wells b. abt 1838 in Oxford, Chenango County, New York, moved to Columbia County, Wisconsin.

This Asa Wells is listed in the Chenango County, New York census for 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850. Also in the Chenango County, New York Census for 1820 is an Asa Wells Sr. I believe that this was Asa Wells' father. There is an Asa Wells living in Hampshire County, Massachusetts in 1790 and 1800 so perhaps this is Asa Wells Sr.

Does anyone have information to link Asa Wells to the Wells family of Massachusetts? I believe that Asa Wells Jr. may have had siblings Carmi and James who were also living in Chenango County, New York in 1810.
Any help will be appreciated.

SPRINGER

Joanne Sun Dec 26 14:45:26 1999
Does anyone have a connection to any SPRINGERS in any Chenago Cty. towns? Need to learn why my GGG-Grandfather, GODFREY SPRINGER (b) 1769, died in Oxford/Norwich in 1842. His wife Phebe Wilcox died in Tiverton (1825). He left a son Thomas in Tiverton (not even mentioned in Probate/below), a son Godfree in Petersburgh, NY, and two other children (names unknown). Maybe he remarried. Have only the following 1830 census of Norwich, in which he was 'head of household': (1) Male 20-30 years of age [Nephew?/Step-son?]
(1) Male 60-70 years of age [This is Godfrey (b) 1760-1770 (actually 1769)]
(1) Female 20-30 years of age [Neice?/Step-daughter?]
(1) Female 70-80 years of age [This could be his unknown (widowed?) sister (b) 1750-60! It may also be a 2nd wife, but she would be older than him.]

An 1842 Probate reads: "At a surrogate court held Oxford 2/15/1842....Owen Phillips of Norwich appeared/applied for Lttrs of Admin. upon Estate of Godfrey Springer decsd and made proof that Godfrey Springer, a resident, died a natural death at Norwich on 1/14/1842; that he died intestate, left surviving, Godfrey Springer a son over age 21, residing in Washington Cty, at or near Whitehall, no other being widow or next of kin, that personal estate will not probably exceed the sum of $175 and Owen Phillips further proved that he is a creditor of the Estate of the decd and applied for lttrs of admin. on said estate as surety? creditors? and it appearing to the surrogate that Godfrey Springer the son has a right to letters on said estate, it is ordered that Godfrey Springer appear before the surrogate on the 3/6/1842 to show cause why letter of admin. of Estate should not issue to the said Owen Phillips as creditor of said Estate...Samuel Mahoon? Surrogate"
This is all I have! Do you know anything about this or any other SPRINGER or OWEN PHILLIPS? Could Owen be related in some way? I NEED HELP! Thank you in advance.... Joanne (genejag@aol.com)

MAIN - WEAVER

Mac Main Mon Dec 27 08:27:23 1999
All I wanted for Christmas 1999 was to find out who were the parents of my gggg grandfather Christoper MAIN were. Christopher and his wife Amelia (Millea) Weaver were reportedly in Chenango county NY in 1802 in the area just west of Norwich where in 1806 a new town was split off and called Stonington and then in 1808 the town name was changed to Pharsalia. This Main family was in the 1810 census for Chenango county and then moved on to Cayauga Co NY in 1813 and then to Butler county Ohio by 1816. Probably came from CT and may be related to BROWN and/or WEAVER families in Chenango county.
