Early Settlers - Sherburne
Early settlers in the Town of Sherburne (#9) of Original Twenty Towns taken from "1874 History of Chenango & Madison Counties, NY" by James H Smith; pub. 1880. Tried to use year, where stated, person and where they were from.
Sherburne was formed from Paris, Oneida county, March 5, 1795 & it originally embraced the town of Smyrna, (Stafford,) which was taken off March 25, 1808. It was enlarged by annexation of a small part of New Berlin in 1852. Settlement was mainly begun by a company of persons originally from Kent, Conn., who two years after end of Revolutionary War, emigrated to Duanesburg, Schenectady county, and disappointed in hopes of securing title to lands on which they settled in that town, they moved in a body to the Chenango Valley, to newly opened lands in the Twenty Townships.
