William James Van Arsdale
William James Van Arsdale was born in Sullivan County, N. Y., October 28, 1834. He became a member of the Society April 6, 1886, and died April 30, 1897. He came to New York City in early boyhood, and was graduated from one of our public schools of the city, and for many years was a trustee of the schools in the ninth ward, where he was known as the teachers' helper and the children's friend.

For more than forty years he was connected with the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, in later times in a confidential capacity in direct touch with the president of the corporation.

At his funeral services his pastor said: "In all his long business record there is not a stain - his hands are clean. His name and history will bear the keenest search-light investigation; whether it be concerning the councils of his employers, or financial trusts committed to his care, it is the same, - his faithfulness to duty and fidelity to the trust reposed in him were manifest to all who knew him, and most conspicuous to those who knew him best."
