    (20) Luther Rice, M.D. , son of Eliphalet (Luman) and (Harriett) Mary (Nichols) Rice, was born 26 Feb 1773 in Glastonbury, Hartford, CT, and married (31) Lucia. Luther M.D. died 14 Nov 1836. He was excommunicated from the Congregational Church (Cortland County, NY) in 1817 for usury. A tombstone in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville, NY, is inscribed, "In memory of Luther Rice, died Nov 14, 1836, age 64." This appears to be only a memorial stone as other research indicates that he died and is buried in the Town of New Lisbon, Otsego County, NY. RAR

    ". . . Justus and Polly (Barnard) Rice, the former a native of CT and the latter of Crown Point, Essex County, NY. They came from Canada to Eldred (PA) in 1818 cleaned and improved the farm . . ." "Justice Rice arrived with three brothers." (probably Luman, George, & Allen). Source unknown.

    1832 or 33 (Fall) - Was living at Salt Valley, McKean, County - Daughter Angeline married Hyde Rice (a first cousin). Was reported to have moved to Cincinnati after the wedding. Another source said he went to Ohio on the river opposite Wheeling WV, reentered the salt business, and remained until his death.
    8/4/1835 - Allen Rice of Allegany Town, Allegany County & Commonwealth of PA to Luman Rice of Olean, Catt. Co., NY, 2 parcels 106 acres each $1374.68.
    1836-1837 - Allen & William Rice shown as resident taxpayers in Keating Twp.

    No tombtsone exists, however, an empty spot next to the grave of Mrs. Grove Rice suggests that he is buried there, having died 24 years prior to her death.

King who was born in Rhode Island. Jerusha died 29 Jun 1862. Horace B. died Jun 1880. He donated $20.00 in nails to help build the Smethport Methodist Church on 10-9-1837 and was a member for over 50 years. His wife, Jerusha had 9 children and all but G.W. were dead by 1890.

    (42) Adeline Rice , daughter of Justice/Justus and Polly (Barnett/Barnard) Rice, was born about 1828 in PA. I think this is the Ada, age 32, living with her brother, Justus Jr., according to the 1860 census..

    (43) Richard A. Rice , son of Justice/Justus and Polly (Barnett/Barnard) Rice, was born 3 Dec 1830 in Eldred, McKean, PA, and married 3 Mar 1864, (83) Calista Lamphier , daughter of William and Calista (Hazen) Lamphier, who was born Dec 1831 in NY. Richard A. died 9 Apr 1899 in Eldred, McKean, PA. Calista died 10 Jul 1910. He was in the War of the Rebellion, enlisting May 18, 1861, in Company I, First PA Rifles. December 18, 1862, he was taken prisoner at Fredricksburg, VA, and exchanged the following May, when he was commissioned 2nd Lt. of his company; was wounded at Laurel Hill in 1864 and honorably discharged June 11, 1864. (From History of McKean County, p. 497) He divorced a Eliza ? on 13 Mar 1859. According to McKean County death records, he died of urinary disease, 3 weeks duration. Gave birth to 5 children. Three were living in 1900.

PA June 13, 1880 Aged 64 yrs 3 mo & 1 day. Obituary in Farmers Valley Column, McKean County Miner, 17 Jun 1880: "Death, always an unwelcome visitor entered the house of W. Rice, Sunday morning June 13, and took his companion, with whom he had taken sweet counsel and walked to the house of God in company for many years. I think she had not quite reached the "three score and ten, yet a goodly number of years were given her. . . "

    (52) Ambrose/Ambrew David Rice , son of Luman (Nichols) and (Mary)Polly (Carpenter) Rice, was born 11 Feb 1820 in Olean, Cattaraugus, NY, and married 26 Jul 1850, (106) Sarah Sophia Smith , daughter of Lemuel and Clarissa (Tanner) Smith, who was born Mar 1829. Ambrose/Ambrew David died 14 Sep 1895 in Portville, Cattaraugus, New York. Sarah Sophia died Feb 1897.

    According to William Adams' Cattaraugus County History, he resided in Portville from 1822 until his death, except for four years as a lumberman in Michigan. Also, that lumbering had been the leading occupation of his life, but of late years he engaged in farming and in the drug business (A.D. Rice & Sons) with his sons, Herman L. and Butler H. President Grant appointed him postmaster, a position he held 16 years.

Oviatt in the 1875 Town of Olean census. He was shown in his mother's home in the Olean Census of 12 Jun 1860, and was living with Allen B. & Frances S. Rice in Portville according to the Census dated 10 Otc 1850.

    (64) William B. Rice , son of Grove and Triphena (sp?) (Briggs) Rice, was born 22 Jan 1827 in Cortland County, NY, and married 16 Jun 1860, (122) Sarah Shepard.

    (65) Sarah M. Rice , daughter of Grove and Triphena (sp?) (Briggs) Rice, was born 10 Jul 1829 in Cattaraugus Co., NY, and married 13 Apr 1870, (123) Levi Clark. Sarah M. died 17 Apr 1871.

    The 1855 Census for Olean, NY indicates she was 24, born in Cattaraugus County, and had lived there 10 years. This make her birthdate ca 1831.

    (68) Hyde Carpenter Rice , son of Almon and Almira (Carpenter) Rice, was born 10 Oct 1836 in PA, and married 1874, (124) Eleanor Nancy Bockoven , daughter of William C. and Maria (Van Vlack) Bockoven, who was born 27 Apr 1851 in NY. Hyde Carpenter died 9 Oct 1919. Eleanor Nancy died 14 Apr 1915. Death date not confirmed, place unknown. Death date not confirmed, place unknown.

    (69) Bruce B. Rice , son of Almon and Almira (Carpenter) Rice, was born about 1838 in PA. Bruce B. died 14 Jun 1864 in Virginia Battlef, Civil War.

    His will, dated 24 August 1862, leaves everything for the education of his siblings, Adaline, Esther, Henrick, and Beverly.

    According to a history of McKean County, he was the second son of Almon & Almira and a Lieutenant in Company I, first PA Bucktails, during the war of the Rebellion. He died as a result of wounds received in the battles of Drainsville and Cross Keys, VA.

    (71) Mary Adaline Rice , daughter of Almon and Almira (Carpenter) Rice, was born about 1844 in PA, and married (133) Nathan T. Albee. Mary Adaline died 1908. This may be the Adaline shown as age 16 in the 22 Jun 1860 Eldred, PA census.

    (72) Harriett Esther Rice , daughter of Almon and Almira (Carpenter) Rice, was born Mar 1848 in PA, and married (134) John R. Learn. Harriett Esther died 1919.

    (73) Henrick M. Rice , son of Almon and Almira (Carpenter) Rice, was born Sep 1850 in PA.

    (74) Beverly Waugh Rice , son of Almon and Almira (Carpenter) Rice, was born 12 Nov 1853 in Eldred, McKean, PA, and married 8 Jun 1882 in Eldred, McKean, PA, (135) Florence E. Langdon , daughter of William and Emma (Tuffing) Langdon, who was born 1860. Beverly Waugh died 1922. Florence E. died 1954.

Barlow who was born 1813. Louisa Lonica died 12 Feb 1919 in Soldiers Grove, Crawford, Wi. George W. died 1888 in Soldiers Grove, Crawford, Wi. George W. was also married to Lucinda Purrington.

    (91) George Washington Rice , son of William and Betsy (E.) (Reed) Rice, was born 23 Jul 1837 in Coryville, McKean, PA, and married 14 Feb 1869 in Portville(Method, NY, (149) Lucy Palmyra Crandall , daughter of Joseph Pendelton and Susan Pendelton (Main(e)) Crandall, who was born 2 Jun 1836 in Portville, Cattaraugus, NY. George Washington died 9 Jun 1922 in Coryville, McKean, PA. Lucy Palmyra died 22 Apr 1924 in Coryville, McKean, PA. Lucy Palmyra was also married to George W. Barrett. Obituary of 15 Jun 1922, in part, reads: "100 years ago this month his father, Wm. Rice, then a boy of 18 years came from Courtland Co., N.Y. to McKean Co." It has been told that he bought his way out of Civil War service.

    Per Carl W. Rice about 1989: "Grandpa Rice got mad at some grandchildren playing the victrola too loud. He took out his jack knife, stabbed through record and turntable, stalked out of the house, fell into a ditch, and broke a hip." The complications caused his death.

    The cemetery has had several names, including: Smith's, Fairview, Fairmount.

    Born on the farm near Portville which later was her son's, Albertus Russell Rice from 1904 to c. 1950's.

    The funeral was held at her home of 55 years by Rev. S.A. Renicks of the Smethport Baptist Church.

Date of birth is from tombstone in Fairmount Cemetery (no date of death), birthplace is from census records. According to McKean County death records, he died of Bright's Disease, 1 tear duration

    (93) Nelson Rice , son of William and Betsy (E.) (Reed) Rice, was born 10 Aug 1841 in Coryville, McKean, PA, and married 24 Apr 1864, (160) Anna Layden who was born 1842 in Ireland. Nelson died 12 Oct 1929 in Liberty Twp., McKean, PA. Anna died 12 Oct 1914.

    His entire life was spent in Coryville (PA) where he lived and farmed the old Rice homestead until 1919 when he came to live with his son, William.

    Died at the home of his son, William J. Rice, on the Brooklynside, of complications incident to old age.

    She reported 3 living and 3 dead children in the 1900 Census.

    (94) John C. Rice , son of William and Betsy (E.) (Reed) Rice, was born 1843 in Coryville, McKean, PA. John C. died 1911.

    McKean County, PA divorce records show a John C. Rice who married Julia A. Borden on 19 August 1869 at Port Allegany. He deserted the marriage in June 1888. She was age 41 on 22 October 1895. The decree was dated, 1 November 1895. A daughter, Mrs. (Mary) J.C. Blauser who was age 24 on 22 October 1895 lived in Smethport. I'm not sure this is the same John C. Rice of this record. RAR

McDowell , daughter of George and Betsy Jane (Nelson) McDowell, who was born 1 Jun 1859 in Wisconsin. Jackson W.(Andrew?) died 19 Dec 1901 in Soldiers Grove, Crawford, Wi. Melissa A. died 5 Jul 1949 in New Sanitarium H.

    Was residing at Mt. Sterling, Wisconsin at time of death.

    Died of Mitral Insufficiency with nephastis. She was a widow at time of death. Death Certificate indicates: DOB 10 Sep 1847 or 1849, DOD 3 Aug 1931, and aged 82 years, 10 months, 24 days. Calculating the 1847 DOB indicates she died at 83y, 10m, 23d, hence the 1849 date is probably correct

Nehemiah (Myer) died 16 Jan 1925 in Smethport, McKean, PA. Mary Elizabeth died 13 Jul 1916. Was taken ill with heart trouble on way home from Baptist Church on 4 Jan 1925. Failed rapidly after that. His funeral was held at the Baptist Church, Rev. H.J. Rumsey officiating

Harriett A. died 6 Dec 1905 in Port Allegany, McKean, PA. Benjamin F. died 1919. Birthdate varies with source. Tombstone: 11 Feb 1852, Death Cert.: Feb 1848. Census records of 1850 and 1870 indicate that 1854 is correct.

    (100) Miles Rice , son of William and Betsy (E.) (Reed) Rice, was born 1856 in Coryville, McKean, PA, and married (177) Lotte. Left Port Allegany, PA sometime after October 1929 for CA. Carl Rice seems to think he later went to AZ where he died, but cannot remember when.

    (103) Luman Olcott Boardman , son of Olcutt P. and Marcia Polly (Rice) Boardman, was born 16 Dec 1835 in Olean, Cattaraugus, NY, and married 5 Sep 1867 in Ellicottville, Cattaraugus, NY, (178) Emeline C. Bartlett who was born 7 Sep 1837 in Olean, Cattaraugus, NY. Luman Olcott died 11 Sep 1881 in Buffalo, Erie, NY. Emeline C. died 1 Jun 1889 in Olean, Cattaraugus, NY. Interred in Olean, NY per Boardman Bible, although tombstone in Portville indicates burial there.

    (105) Sallie H. Rice , daughter of Eliphalet Luman and Sally (Harrison) Rice, married (181) Thomas F. Morris. Sallie H. died about Oct 1859 in Plainfield, NJ.

    (107) Herman Luman Rice , son of Ambrose/Ambrew David and Sarah Sophia (Smith) Rice, was born 16 Jan 1852 and married 1880, (182) Helen Minnie Tingley who was born about 1855 in PA. Herman Luman died 12 Jun 1913 in Ceres, McKean, PA.

    He was a druggist in Rochester and Chicago seven years and is the inventor of several patent medicines of value. Since 1875 he has been a member of the firm, A.D. Rice & Sons, Druggists. He and wife were living in Portville per the 1900 & 1910 Census.

    According to his obituary, he died at home of brother, B.H. Rice at Power House (prob. Ceres, PA)

    Was her maiden name "Minnie" or "Tingley"? Obituary of Herman L. Rice said he was united in marriage to Helen Tingley.

    (108) Butler Harper Rice , son of Ambrose/Ambrew David and Sarah Sophia (Smith) Rice, was born 1854 and married (183) Ida Bridgman. Butler Harper died 27 Jan 1932 in Ceres, McKean, PA. Ida died 14 Dec 1932 in Ceres, McKean, PA.

    Obituary, in part, "Port Allegany Argus/Reporter," Thursday, 22 Jan 1932: PROMINENT LUMBERMAN DEAD. " . . . Although he had been ill for a long time, the news of his passing comes as a shock to many. Butler Rice was large of stature and a fine specimen of American manhood. He was known far and near for his geneality and friendliness. . . . He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ida Bridgeman Rice of Ceres and one sister, Mrs. Harriett Rice Bridgeman of Buffalo, NY. . . . "

    Bequeathed to her brother, Harry R. Bridgman and his wife, Harriett Rice Bridgman everything. In the event of their death, all to nephew, Robert Rice Bridgman.

    He is a brother of Ida Bridgman Rice, wife of Butler H. Rice.
