ADAMS

I am looking for my wife's ancestors : (1) Oliver ADAMS. Born approx. 1760 in Northumberland (some sources say the region in England, others say the town in Saratoga County NY) and died in 1832 in Preble, Cortland County NY. He moved to Preble, in about 1814, buying land in both 1814 and 1815. His wife's name was probably Catherine, with a possible maiden name of Hager; she died in Preble in 1830. They had 6 sons (William, Oliver [d. in 1816 at 24 yrs], Elijah, John, Abraham and Jacob) and a daughter Zubia. Family members appear in Preble in the 1820 census. William, son of Oliver, married Phoebe LEWIS [no information know] in Preble in 1809. All members of William's family moved to Illinios in 1842. William lived in several locations in the Cook and Kane County areas of IL but settled in the town of Dundee about 1838. One of his sons was DeWitt Clinton Adams, also a prominent Dundee merchant and resident in the late 1800's. I would be especially interested in any birth records for Oliver, his death record, and any obituary there may be. I don't know what church he was in, but his son in IL helped organize a Baptist Church. (2) Derrick ADAMS, brother to Oliver. Listed as living in Sullivan, Madison County NY in the 1820 Census.

George Bentley Co. served in Company B 3rd Reg't, Wis Inf 1864-1865. CALL

The family of my great grandfather, Jacob Call, came from Cortlandt. He was born in the 1820's and lived as an adult in Stony Point, (Rockland Co.,) NY. When he moved to Stony Point, he found another Call family already in residence, but did not consider himself related. Research has shown that the original ancestor of the Rockland County Calls, was Nicholas Call and suspect that Jacob's ancestors may have stayed in Cortlandt for a longer period than the family of Nicholas Call. The 1820 Census for Truxton shows a Joel Call, and I wonder if he might be a link to Jacob. Thank you.

His obit states that, "He was reared in the county of his birth and educated at the academy of Cincinnatus, New York." CORL

I have been searching for information on my grandmother's family. My paternal grandmother's name is Clara Belle CORL Snyder, born July 31, 1909, Preble NY. Her parents were Clarence and Ida DOANE Corl.

Clara married Gearld Christopher SNYDER and lived on Pine Woods Rd, near Etna NY in a house that burned, we think, in the 1930's. They moved up the hill called Turkey Hill or Baker Hill Road (by the old Plantation Inn, near Etna - Varna area) They lived fairly close to the top of the hill for many years on the left side of the road, green house, set back in. My father attended the one room school house at the top of the hill. We played there as young kids.

Clara and Gearld had 4 children: Alice SNYDER Battle, Joyce SNYDER Payson, Gearld Lester SNYDER (my father 1/22/32-12/24/59) and Wesley Lee Snyder. Clara and Gerald built a home and trailer park at 27 Pinckney Road in Etna called Shady Grove Trailer Park. Gearld died in the 1960's, and Clara has been in a nursing home for many years in Chester VA.

Nothing has been found on Isabella Frasier/Fraser. Searches have been done in Schenectady, Washington and Saratoga Counties in New York and they have no record. A search by Alex Fraser of the Glengarry Genealogical Society, Lancaster, Ontario, Canada produced the following >record from St. Andrew's Presbyterian (now United) Church Records in Williamstown, Ontario:

Trowbridge stole me away and married me with little form and in haste--my brother Captain Frasier, belonged to the British army, and my Uncle was General Frasier, killed at the battle of Saratoga."

    GAMBLE

Seeking the parents of Elizabeth GAMBLE b & d unk, par unk who married Nathaniel CALVERT ca 1804 presumably in Cortland Co, NY. Cortland Co N. Y. Deed bk B-17 dated 21 Sept 1807 between James GAMBLE & Nancy his wife of Homer, Onandaga, N. Y. & Nathaniel CAVART. This deed shows the only reference to a GAMBLE that I have found that shows any direct tie to Elizabeth and I suspect they could be her parents. In a later deed, James Gamel (sic)& Nancy Gamble (sic) his wife of Homer, Cortland Co., NY sell part of lot #92 5 Dec 1821 to Obadiah Bories, and he sells land to Samuel Gamble (B-578), all are parts of great lot #92 (including the part sold to Nathaniel Calvert in 1807). I have not seen anything further on the name GAMBLE in Cortland county. However, in "First setters of Hebron", Washington county, NY, there was: Alexander Gamble, an Irish soldier, was next on the creek, below Getty. He came there in 1772 or '73. He had 2 sons, Samuel and James, both gone from the town.(Extracted from: Sleeper News, Volume 3, Number 3, August 1995, copyright 1995.) I do not know the date of the deposition that this extract refers to, but, I do know that John CALVERT the immigrant father of Nathaniel CALVERT spent several years in Washington county, NY before coming to Cortland County in abt 1800. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me on this research.

    HUNT

Need information on the family of Asa Hunt of Marathon (b. 1802 CT). In 1860, a Lewis Swift age 38 b. NY is living with him. In 1865, a Sarah Simonds is there, listed as a servant. The fact that ties them all together is that a George Swift, listed 1 page away on the 1860 census deposed in pension file of Lydia (Simonds) Hall, my gr grandmother. In 1850, Asa is in Lapeer. For 1830 and 40, he seems to be in Virgil on the census. Since Lapeer was built out of Virgil, that makes sense.

Asa had 5 children: William E, Lucretia, Louisa, Burnam and Francis. Lucretia m. the Lewis Swift mentioned above, while Louisa married George Swift, also mentioned above. Francis married a Peck.

Any information on this line of the Hunt family would be appreciated. I don't believe he connects to the Japeth Hunt line in the area as they were already in NY a decade before Asa was born in CT. According to the 1855 census, Asa removed to Cortland circa 1827.

    JOHNSON

Looking for information on possible parents of Sarah Johnson. She was born 1807 in Broome Co. NY. In 1827, she married Asa Hunt in Cortland Co. On the 1830 census, Asa is living in Virgil, along with a lot of Johnson families. However, if you backtrack to 1820, there is only 1 Johnson family that has a girl in it ages 10-16 (Sarah). It is Abner Johnson and with him are several young men, which would explain the abundance of Johnsons on the 1830 census.

I suspect that Abner is a possible son of John Johnson of Broome Co. NY. He did have a documented son Abner b. 1769.

    MULLALLY

I have been trying for many years to obtain information as to what happened to my Grandfather ANTHONY (TONY) MULLALLY. Tony MULLALLY was a patient for many years at Binghamton State Hospital,Binghamton, Broome Co., NY. According to records at hospital my Grandfather walked away from the grounds of the hospital in August of 1935, never to return. My family had a news clipping (un-dated) sent to them probably from a Cortland,NY paper. The clipping tells of the finding of remains with hospital clothing and the name Tony sewn in, the remains were thought to be those of my grandfather Anthony (Tony) MULLALLY. The remains were found just outside the city of Cortland in a wooded area. I would appreciate any information concerning the above. I have already pursued almost all possible ways and then some.

    NILES / TANNER

Desperately needing information on a RILEY NILES of Cortland County, NY. In 1850 he was listed in Cortland living with ZERAH TANNER and family. RILEY NILES was 22 at this time. In 1860 he was married to a MARTHA (believed to be MARTHA TANNER, b. 1830) and living in Virgil, Cortland Co. RILEY was born about 1828 but his family is unknown to me. Can anyone provide information from a death certificate or connect him with ANSEL NILES, b. 1794 New York, but living in Livingston Co. Michigan. ANSEL NILES was listed as part owner of land in Michigan with RILEY until 1843. The odd thing about this is in the 1850 Livingston county, Mich. census, there is a 5 year old RILEY NILES, b. 1845 Mich, living with ANSEL. I suspect ANSEL is the grandfather, not the father. Can anyone help me with this puzzle?

    NYE

There were a number of Nye's around Cortland County for many years. At the moment we are trying to establish if in fact my grandmother Oley May Beebe was born 11/11/1872 in Homer, NY . She m. Jay German Nye who farmed in McLean until about 1930 when they bought the Riverside Cabins between Cortland and Homer. The surname should definitely be a Cortland County Surname. I believe Oley's grandfather Henry Rumsey was a publisher and inventor in the Homer area in his day. I have a great deal of data on the Nye family for anyone researching the geneology.

I'd be thrilled if that's "my" Owen, who was a good friend of an ancestor, according to sketchy reports. This ancestor had a brother in Co. RYAN

We are interested in the ancestors of Mildred Alice Ryan (b? - d abt 1978). She married (#1) James E. Graves prior to 1919. Their only son Edwin M. Graves born (b1919 - d1989) was born and raised in Cortland. Edwin married M Joyce Lindley (b1922 - d1972) who was also born and raised in Cortland. She married (#2) Arnold Darling (b? - d abt 1972) before 1943, I have pictures of them in the Malloryville house in 1943. I also believe a great deal of Mildreds ancestors are buried in Cortland Rural Cemetary, since in her papers was a deed to a grave which appears to be in a Ryan section.

    WOOD

Looking for info on siblings and parents of Smith WOOD, b. 1815-17 possibly Milford, Cortland Co. NY. I believe he spent most of his growing-up years in Cortland Co. and vicinity.

I've found various tiny fragments of clues that indicate he _may_ be related (possibly a son or grandson?) of Timothy WOOD and his 2nd wife, Lucy SMITH of Virgil, Cortland Co. I know Smith WOOD had a brother Jackson living somewhere in New York around 1880; he also had a nephew, "D. WOOD" in Burlington, Calhoun Co., MI who came to Smith's funeral in Bronson, MI in 1888. Don't know, but think this D. WOOD may be a son of Allen WOOD - who was in Burlington MI in 1850's. I know that this Allen WOOD was a son of Timothy. So that's one reason I think Smith might be related to Timothy WOOD's family, though I did not find his name in Timothy's will (1851), and I still don't have a clear connection on D. WOOD or who his family was.

Smith WOOD married Clarissa WILLIAMS (b. 1825) in 1840 at "the home of the bride" in Wayne Co. NY. I suspect the WILLIAMS must have some ties to Cortland Co. - or the WOOD family to Wayne Co. - in order for this marriage to have come about, but don't know.

Smith WOOD and Clarissa went to OH sometime between 1840-1844, and lived in Portage, Huron, and Paulding Counties, until they moved to Bronson, Branch Co. MI sometime around 1860-1865. Smith was a justice of the peace in MI for the rest of his life.

Clarissa WILLIAMS was the dau. of Amos and Sarah. Don't know Sarah's maiden name. Sarah b. approx. 1785. Don't know when Amos was born; or where either of them were born. Sarah died in Bronson, Branch Co. MI in 1850. It is said by a Branch Co. MI history that Amos died "in Indiana" but we don't know when or where. Clarissa died in Bronson in 1877.

    Anybody recognize anyone here?

    WOOLWORTH

My name is John Woolworth, I live in Seattle, and am, and have been researching the Woolworth Family Lines for several years now along with my cousin, Harlin in Sioux City, IA.

Our side of the family settled almost entirely in The Iowa area. My GGGF whose name was James H. Woolworth was born in Pittstown, New York, married Sarah Maria Yates there in 1837, had several children and then moved on to the west. He stopped for a short period of time in Marathon, and was living there when both the 1850 Federal and the 1855 State Census were taken. I have not been successful in finding his relationship to Joshua Woolworth who was living just down the street at the same time.

James H. Woolworth moved on a few years later to a small town in southern Wisc. by the name of Arena. His wife died and is buried there, he then shortly remarried in the same town, and in the county registrars records of marriages, James H. states that his fathers name is Reuben Woolworth and his mothers first name is Salinda, but he does not give her maiden name. In my data base of Woolworths' I have a listing of five "Reubens". Two were born after James H., bringing the list down to three. Of the three remaining two of them are well known and identified including there wives and children and places of residence, etc. I have therefore eliminated them. This leaves me with just one "Reuben Woolworth".

This Reuben Woolworth is of very great interest to me, he is the third son of Reuben E. Woolworth, he was born in 1793, making him just 25 years old when my James H. was born in 1817. I know absolutely nothing about this Reuben other than his date of birth and parents, brothers and sisters. Oh did I mention, he, Reuben has a brother by the name of Joshua Woolworth. Yes the same Joshua who lived in the town of Marathon. It really drives me insane to know that my James said that his father's name was Reuben, that he moved to Marathon, that Joshua lived in Marathon at the very same time and that Joshua's next older brother was named Reuben, of whome we know virtually nothing at all.

I have a very large data base on the Woolworth Family, including many from Cortland and there lineage, and would be most happy to facilitate anyone interested in this family from Cortland County or any other part of New York State.

    HAIGHT
Query Text: I'm seeking any information on James H. Haight and his descendants. From what I can gather, James H. Haight married an Ada Bouton on January 24, 1827 in Albany County, New York. They then moved to the Cortland County area. He was registered in the 1830 census in the town of Freetown, 1840 in the town of Virgil, 1850 in the town of Cortlandville, and then back in Freetown in 1860.

Also recorded in the 1860 census was a James H. Haight, Jr. in Freetown. James & Ada had two other sons, David B. and George H. that I can document, but James I cannot. I am looking for a solid connection between James H. Haight and James H. Haight, Jr. It would be a logical assumption that they are directly related because of the names, but I need definite dates. According to information passed down from my family, James H. Haight (Jr.? - my family makes no mention of a Jr.) married a Deziah\Desiah\Desire Kent from either Truxton or Homer area. They had a daughter, Madge E. Haight, who was my g-g-grandmother.

James H. Haight & Ada were buried in Forest Hill cemetary near Blodgett Mills, but I cannot find any trace of James H. Haight & Deziah Kent. My g-g-grandmother grew up in the Truxton area & she and my g-g-grandfather, George hurlbert, are buried in the Cuyler cemetary. I would think that they stayed in the area since their family did.

If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated! I can trace James H Haight's ancestors back to 1545, but I need some information so that I can link it all together! I'm looking for any birth, death or marriage dates, etc. I have some information, but I am doubting the accuracy of the information because some of the information seems to conflict with what my family has passed along, etc. Michael Seamans
