CALL

The family of my great grandfather, Jacob Call, came from Cortlandt. He was born in the 1820's and lived as an adult in Stony Point, (Rockland Co.,) NY. When he moved to Stony Point, he found another Call family already in residence, but did not consider himself related. Research has shown that the original ancestor of the Rockland County Calls, was Nicholas Call and suspect that Jacob's ancestors may have stayed in Cortlandt for a longer period than the family of Nicholas Call. The 1820 Census for Truxton shows a Joel Call, and I wonder if he might be a link to Jacob. Thank you.

CHAPEL

CHAPEL, William Wallace (my great grandfather) was born 1 Sep 1839 in Pitcher, Chenango Co. His obit states that, "He was reared in the county of his birth and educated at the academy of Cincinnatus, New York." The dates he attended the "academy" would likely have been in the 1850's as, "In 1859 he attended a term of the law school of Albany, New York, ...." In addition, I have his original marriage certificate from 13 Dec 1865 when he married Alice G. Pritchard of Cincinnatus. I am searching for information on the school he attended in Cincinnatus and for information on the Chauncey PRITCHARD family.

    CORL

I have been searching for information on my grandmother's family. My paternal grandmother's name is Clara Belle CORL Snyder, born July 31, 1909, Preble NY. Her parents were Clarence and Ida DOANE Corl.

Clara married Gearld Christopher SNYDER and lived on Pine Woods Rd, near Etna NY in a house that burned, we think, in the 1930's. They moved up the hill called Turkey Hill or Baker Hill Road (by the old Plantation Inn, near Etna - Varna area) They lived fairly close to the top of the hill for many years on the left side of the road, green house, set back in. My father attended the one room school house at the top of the hill. We played there as young kids.

Clara and Gearld had 4 children: Alice SNYDER Battle, Joyce SNYDER Payson, Gearld Lester SNYDER (my father 1/22/32-12/24/59) and Wesley Lee Snyder. Clara and Gerald built a home and trailer park at 27 Pinckney Road in Etna called Shady Grove Trailer Park. Gearld died in the 1960's, and Clara has been in a nursing home for many years in Chester VA.

    COWLIN(G)

Researching COWLIN(G) family: Joseph, Susanna, and children who immigrated from England 1851. Have been unable to locate death date and place for Joseph COWLIN(G) Sr. though I believe it was before the 1855 census when the children were scattered. My great-grandfather, Matthew COWLIN resided in Cazenovia, Madison Co., New York in 1860 but he mustered in Union Army at Cortlandville 1862. Would like to know if Civil-War era newspapers for the county are available and where. I anticipate a trip to New York this summer and would like to look these papers over for tidbits of information. According to the 1855 NY State census for Cortland Co., the newspaper at that time was the CORTLAND DEMOCRAT which had been established in 1840 - a weekly paper. Also interested in availability of church records for that time period in Cortland Co. for what was then the First M.E. Church. Is there still a church named First United Methodist? If so what is its address?

    CRAIN - CRANE

I am seeking information about, and the ancestors of John Crain/Crane b. 1797 and married to Phebe Grove b. 1800. I have information that John came to Erie Co PA from Cortland Co and was possibly born in Cortland Co. In the 1820 Cortland Co census there is a Lemuel, John, James, and Daniel Crane all in Harrison and all on the same page and from their ages would appear to be a family. In 1840 a Lemuel and a John Crane show up in Erie Co PA. I know that my John had children had children born in both NY and PA during this time period. I suspect that Lemuel is the father of John but can not prove it. Any help in sorting this out would be greatly appreciated.
