His mother, Mary Ann, was born in Ohio of parents born in New York. Belive her family moved back to New York. The HURLBUT Genealogy gives her surname as HUBBARD but I think this may be an error. URL: http://people.ne.mediaone.net/aemorrow/fg01/fg01_042.html

QRYTEXT: I'm looking for information on John BINGHAM, who lived in McGrawville and/or Candor, NY in the 1820s and 1830s. He was born 26 Feb 1812 in Connecticut. About 1835 in NY, he married Sally HEAD. In the 1830 census, John is listed next door to a woman named Mary Ann HEAD, but it's not known if this is a relation. John and Sally moved to Illinois about 1848 after having 5 kids in NY: William, Mary Jane, Charles, Elizabeth, Arzenew. They lived 5-8 years in Lake Co, IL and had Almira and Melvin before moving to Bremer Co, IA. Sally died, probably in IL abt 1855, and John married the mother of his son-in-law Jane WAGNER (Moon), who may also have been from the same area in NY.

John's parents were Elisha BINGHAM and Tryphenia OLNEY. They were still living in McGrawville in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

I'm looking for any information on the Head family and any specifics on the Bingham family in NY. I can provide John's ancestry if anyone is interested.

Thanks

Vicki,

I would love to help with this, but I am afraid this is not a time for me to

do so. If I could do something that would take only about 3 to 4 hours over

the Christmas break, I will have some time to devote then.

BTW. I don't know if you remember me, but we are related (I believe we did

establish the relationship at another time). My

great-great-great-grandmother Jane (TITUS) CORNWELL, of Moravia, NY, moved

there from Cortland Co. and Greene Co., NY. She was descended from Benjamin

and Jane (TITUS) TITUS.

Since I have lived in Florida for almost 20 years, I have been interested in

the Titus branch that ended up down here in Florida and founded Titusville,

FL. This was a Col. TITUS (forget his first name, but retrieved a lot of

information that is in the Titusville branch of the Brevard Co. Public

Library) and it would take me some time to dig out how they fit into the

line. Apparently, there is a descendant of that family still living up in

Daytona Beach. I contacted them, but did not hear anything back.

Thanks.

Subject: Re: Schermerhorn family, Cortland Co., NY & Asa Titus

Dear Ms. Titus: Thank you for your message re: possible volunteer to obtain

Ethel (Kellerman) Schermerhorn obit., Cortland Co., NY. Regarding Asa Titus

- Mary "Ellen" (nee, Alford) Titus, have many of his (their) descendants

accounted for, but not all -- Alford side of my family was a bit weak on

genealogy / family history and allegedly Aunt "Ellen" was one least likely to

dwell on family details. Would like to know more, if possible, of Asa's

ancestors, & siblings -- have tried to do some research here at Indianapolis

(Indiana State Library) but have not had much success with his lineage -- am

just glad I''ve got as much as I have from cousins who used to live at Roann,

IN -- now in Oklahoma. Have always wondered where Asa & Ellen met ?-- here

in Indiana, or out in Iowa where her dad (my first great-grandfather) died.

--or back in Ohio where they had lived until beyond 1880 census when they

moved to Iowa. Her dad died 1884 in Iowa -- and little over 4 years later

(1888) Asa and "Ellen" were married here in Indiana. Her mom then remarried

next for about a six-month marriage which took place at Miami County,

Indiana, before divorcing. Her mom then remarried for another time (1991)

again marriage taking place at Miami County, Indiana, to a civil-war veteran

who lived in Kosciusko County and Marshall County, Indiana, areas. If you

need any Indiana assistance, please let me know. Yours, Richard Alford.

Would like any and all info on him, wife, children, grandchildren etc. Thanks Annette Campbell, (anncamp@linkny.com)

Thank you so much! I feel pretty good about Reuben myself... Not that that's

a proper way to conduct a genealogical search... But it can pay off. Phineas

did. I suspect that most of Reuben's offspring moved to IL. Some seem to

have gone on to IA. (This is assuming he is in fact the father of Phineas,

Amos, Jesse, etc.) This seems to be one of the lines that Ken Graves does

not know about. I've been keeping him informed of what I find when I find

it, hoping that on his end he's doing the same.

This Graves thing is really baffling! The names are odd, and I keep finding

them in different places, but can't make any definite connection. I think

we've got younger forgotten syndrome in this line somewhere. There are a lot

of similar names in Onondaga County as well, which, if I understand

correctly is where Cortland County came from. Probably cousins.

The success stories are great, aren't they! I can't even tell you how

excited I was to find out that Juliette hadn't come west on the orphan

train!

Thanks again for your help! Good luck poking around!

QRYTEXT: Looking for information on Peter Secord ,born September 15,1726,New Rochelle, New York. His father was Daniel Secord married to Catherine Mabie. He served in the American revolution with Butler's Rangers.

The information I am looking for is about his first wife Abigail Fowler whom he apparently married in New York. They had 4 children one of whom is my descendant Daniel Secord born 1756 also in Cortland Manor Westchester county, New York. The other children were Abigail, Silas and Fanny?.

Peter escaped to Fort Niagara and was joined later by his children . There is no mention of a wife at this point but later he married the widow Abigail Emmett and they had several more children.

Peter died April 1818 in Yarmouth ,Elgin County, Ontario. I am trying to get a copy of his will at the moment.

Apparently Peter Secord lived until he was 103 years old.

These Secords are descendants of Ambroise Sicard born in 1631 in Mornac France.A French Hugenot family that escaped from France to New York .

Any information would be great as well as I would be willing to share what I already have..

Dear Ms. Titus:

I ran into your Cortland County Web Page while doing some research

regarding the Tenth N.Y. Cavalry, of which my Great-great grandfather B.

Frank Rice was a member during the Civil War. I did not see any history

regarding my Rice family and its relationship to Cortland County. I was born

in Cortland (1949), and my family moved to Florida in 1956, although I try to

return to Cortland every year or so. I have some details regarding my Rice

Family and would be happy to provide you with the same if you desire. By way

of general information, Moses Rice, his family, and servants moved to the

Cortland area, I believe Solon in the mid 1700's, his name is found on the

monument to American Revolution soldiers in Cortland, according to the

records that I have he was stationed at Fort Ticonderoga, for a brief time.

His son, perhaps grandson, Rufus Rice was the sheriff of Cortland County and

later the Justice of the Peace. I have his original judgment book regarding

the mid 1800 period of time, (that I have provided be left to the Cortland

Historical Society in my will, hopefully you won't be getting it anytime

soon). Rufus' son Benjamin Franklin Rice (Frank) fought at Gettysburg, I

have what I believe to be the Bible stand from the Tenth N.Y. Calvary, also

left to your society. Frank's son Irving was The Assemblyman from Corland

1918-1933, I have a great deal of his materials that I may one day turn over

to the Society, if an adequate interest is not shown by one of my chidren (

the youngest is now 15). At any rate, I have some considerable information

regarding my Cortland County ancestors, and would be happy to provide you

with the same, if you so desire.

Vicki,

Yes you are right with the history of chenango, Co Daniel Shipman and Sarah

Eastman came out of Roxbury CT in 1803 to pitcher N.Y. one of those 5 sons

was Joseph I do have a marriage date of 1841 on Joseph and Hannah I think

that Hannah was one of the Virgil bunch. If they were married in 1841 and

left to come to Illinois in1853 that would be 12 years in Virgil ?? I don't

know where they were married.?? Maybe I could write Mrs. Bays to see if she

could come up with something. The other sons went on to Rochester,N.Y. One

was a famous surgeon in the civil war. It's funny there is no trace of

Hannah in Virgil. She is buried here in DeKalb

as is Joseph. The other Shipmans in Cortland,Co I'm not aware of.

Thanks Vicki- What I am trying to do is connect this family with some

family at the beginning orthe end or the middle with something I

already have in my computer or a publication I may have. So far no

luck. Will keep looking unless they are an isolated family that is

independant of anything I have.

Vickie,

I'd like to add my name to researchers in Cortland Co and vicinity. WHITE is

primary, but if you add various lines, kindly add HOAG, FULLER, DAVIS, CLARK,

KEENE, GALLUP, BURDICK, ROCKWELL, WILCOX, SWETT/SWEET

Family I'm certain lived in the area began with ICHABOD WHITE m. RHODA HOAG,

children DAVID (m. ELEANOR DAVIS) and PHOEBE (m. THOMAS SNOW), family later

lived in McKean Co, and some in Potter Co, PA. Ichabod was son of William,

son of William, son of Andrew; Rhoda was d/o Daniel Hoag and Susannah Jones

from Oblong, Dutchess Co, NY area.

I'm still looking for burial sites for Ichabod and Rhoda, both of whom are

purported by some to be buried in Cortland Co, Tully/Prebble/Norwich area,

but Ichabods Rev War papers indicate he died in Rensslaer or Columbia Co, NY.

Rhoda's daughter Phoebe married a Thomas Snow and Rhoda lived with her in

her last few years of life. Descendants of this family are in DAR, have

papers, but I have been unsuccessful so far in locating them.

I'm guessing that David White, son of Ichabod and Rhoda was born in this area

and that they later moved to McKean Co, PA. I'm still wondering if they had

more children; it seems likely given my family's um fecundity and enthusiasm

to produce heirs even into their 60s, laugh. (The men that is; and many of

them had several families.) I believe that David and P. Adeline Keene are

both buried in McKean Co, PA; cousin has verified those sites.

I recall your name, so I know that I've written to you before and I think you

told me we're different families, but if any of this rings a bell, it would

be a kindness if you would respond personally.

David's son was ARVIN CLARK and his son (my grandfather) ARVIN RAY WHITE. I

noticed an Arvin Hoag this round of "surfing" and I find that interesting and

another small avenue to check out.

Two of Ichabod's brothers ARE buried in the Bromley Cemetery and I have most

of their lines current. We still don't have much on Nathaniel and nothing on

Peregrine, but we think we may have found Nathaniel in McKean co. Another

area to explore. We're related to just about everyone down there, laugh.

Best, kathie

In particular I am looking for the parents of Phineas GRAVES b. 1800 VT, who married Anna KENDALL in Truxton before 1828. Phineas had brothers named Amos and Jesse, and possibly also Lebbeus, Daniel and Orrin. Their father may have been Reuben GRAVES Jr. of Truxton.

QRYTEXT: One of the biggest problems I have faced in the search for my kinfolk seems to be they moved about so fast they were always one jump ahead of the census takers. About all they ever left behind were their daughters. For this reason, I am going to attempt a different ploy. One of my earliest relatives was Nathaniel GRUMMOND, bn: 5 June 1788. He settled in German, Cortland County, NY. He died there 3 April 1872. His wife was Lydia WENTWORTH, bn: December 28 1788 and died in German 25 April 1870. Up until now, all else I knew about them is they had one son, Ferdinand Grommon [sic] buried in the plot next to them. He died 15 Feb 1832, at the age of 22 years. These three people are buried behind the Church in Pitcher, Chanango County, NY, less then six miles from German, in Cortland County. I have since learned there were other children growing up at the home in German.

Emily Grummons, was born in German, abt 1817. She married Michael A. Mericle date unknown. What is known, he died 25 August 1872 at the young age of 54 years

Henry C, Mericle, bn 26 May 1849 died young

Lydia A. Mericle bn 26 June 1849

Milford D Mericle bn 30 Nov 1846 died 03 June 1860

William GRUMMONS was bn: 1819 in Otsego County before the family reached German, NY. On 20 June 1847, he wed Eliza Kenyon, age 25, daughter of Asa Kenyon at the Church at Pitcher. The ceremony performed by the Rev, Elijah Beebe.

William Milford Grummons, bn: 1849

Eliza Grummons, bn 1850

Adalpo ??? bn: 1854

Sally Grummonds [sic] was also born in German in 1819. She was to become the 2nd wife of Peter Smith, bn. 31 October 1814 and died 26 July 1884. Sally died 24 June1896. Peter and Sally are both buried behind the Baptist Church in Cincinnatus Cortland County, NY.

Allen Smith, bn 24 April 1849. Owned a farm in Brackel, and a store in

Cincinnatus.

William N. Smith, no other data.

Nathaniel Grummons, Jr., bn abt. 1827 in German first married Harriet Burrows, he was 23 years old, Harriet was 25 years old. Harriet died at the age of 29 years, in 1860, leaving behind one child, Fredrick W. Grummond, bn. in 1854 in Kittellville, Chanango County, NY. Soon after Fredrick's mother died he went to live with his grandparents in McDonough, NY. Four years later, Nathaniel Grummond remarried and moved to Binghamton, Broome County, NY.

Have you thought to try looking in Cortland or Chanango Counties for the

name. Goetcheus and found a great number of them either in Pitcher

Cemetery or Lisle Cemetery of Broome County. My g-g-ggranduncle David

Grummons of Lisle, NY married, Mary Goetcheus daughter of John D and

Amelia ( Ford) Goetcheus. Mary was born in 1841 and died in 1906. They

had one son, to my knowledge, a Holden Grummons. On 27 Feb. 1886,

Holden was placed on probation with the Yorkshire

(now known as Lisle) Methodist Church. The following month, 13 March

1887 his mother Mary was also placed on probation. The result of both

trials they were dropped from the church. At this time, I am attempting

to acquire a record of why they were placed on probation. I suspect for

alcohol use. If you think this may have been Goetcheus could be

Gutchess. It might be to our best interest to work this one out

together.

I have written previously and cannot find any relatives. Kenneth was my

Father, the family spelled the name as PECK or PEEK. There were four

children,

Edna b. 31 DEC 1912

Elizabeth b. 15 SEP 1914

two step sisters,

Mary Peek b. 1921

Any help in this area would be appreciated. I have quite a bit of success

but cannot find the girls anywhere or my Grandmother, Bessie Anna Lyke Peek

QRYTEXT: Bill,

I was not very familiar with Grummons in central NY, but I am quite familiar with both Maricle (Mericle) and the Peter Smith families. I am the former president of the Cortland County Genealogical Society (I now live in Florida). Also, note that German is in Chenango not Cortland County.

There were four Michael's in the Maricle family (also spelled Mericle in some records). The one you refer to is, Michael Adam Maricle, b. 26 June 1817 son of Cornelius Mericle Sr. He died as you said age 54. He married Emily Grummons and had 9 children:

1. Harriet R., 1844-1914 m. A. Ruggles Cass of Taylor, NY

2. Helen E., 1845-1906 m. Elijah Crane of Taylor, NY

3. Milford D., 1847-1859

4. Lydia A., 1849-1921, m.1-Edwin S. Cass; 2-Thomas Weaver

5. Henry C., 1851-

6. Emma, 1855-1922, m. Frank W. Coates

7. Cecilia, 1858-1922, m. Elias E. Kenyon

8. Julia

9. George C., 1861-1945; m. Sarah J. Alexander

I have followed several of these family to the present day, mostly in the Cincinnatus, Cortland County, NY area.

****************

Peter Smith, b. 31 Oct. 1814, son of John P. & Betsey (Countryman) Smith; d. 26 July 1884; m.1-Amy Rickard (d. soon after m.); Sally Grummonds & had 4 children:

1. William M., m.1-Hester Baldwin; 2-Frances Andrews; 3-Hester Phillips; 4-Emma Davis.

2. Sarah Jane, m.1-Leland Robinson; 2-Joseph Silvernail

3. Allen, 1849-1921, m1-Julia Baldwin; 2-Esadena (Beckwith) Birdlebough.

4. Sally, m. Adam Tice.

NAME: Elizabeth Reagan

EMAIL: areagan@a-znet.com

DATE: Feb 28 2000

QRYTEXT: Dear Tim, By reading your message you cleared up a couple of questions for me. Let me see if I can help you. I have the Naturalization paper for John Reagan who was brother to Maurice. It appears they came from Limmerick, Ireland also. Maurice was born Aug. 10, 1846 in Ireland. Arrived in U.S. on Dec. 15, 1864 at the age of 13, I suspect. He was naturalized on Sept. 16, 1868. He lived with his brother Michael, father Patrick, Sr., mother Bridgett, sister Margaret and brother Patrick, Jr. on Reagan Rd. in the Town of Willet (according to 1875 Census of Cortland Co.). Eventually one of the brothers, Michael or Maurice, moved and I suspect it was Maurice, to a farm on what is now on Barry Hollow Rd, a short distance from the Reagan Rd. estate. In later years the farm belonged to Christopher McMahon who married a woman named Grace, whose maiden name I don't know. I always thought it was Reagan and that was how we came to be related to them. Now I am in doubt. Maurice died!

!

in 1910 at the age of 62 years, of "myocarditis, etc." according to the records in Willet. A map of the Reagan homes can be obtained from the Cortland County Tax Map office. It is the map of Willet before 1900, maybe as old as 1885 or so. It shows their homesteads but does not name the roads. If this information is of any value to you, I have more on the Reagan family, although I don't have the history of Patrick and Bridgett Reagan, Sr. nor do I know where they are buried. Maurice and his brother John are buried in the Marathon Cemetery. I suspect the family was predominantly Catholic and therefore buried in a Catholic cemetery which I have not found yet. I also suspect that more information about the Reagans may be obtained from Doris Adams, Clerk for the Town of Marathon, although I haven't had a chance to write to her yet. Otherwise, information on the Reagans may be obtained through the County Courthouse Census records and Naturalization papers. I haven't researched deed!

!

s to the properties yet. Maurice's brother John was my husband's great-grandfather. I have more on the Reagan family and will be happy to share it with you and hope you will do likewise. I am most interested in the origins of Patrick, Sr. and his wife Bridgett but have no information on them except what I found in the Census records..

Vicki,

You and me both (chronic condition)! Thank you for writing me about the

JOHNSONs! I am brand new to JOHNSON research and apologize that I have very

little info to offer yet.

I just found out that my WARRENs are supposed to be related to Elizabeth

WARREN b Feb 1782/92, who m in Salisbury,VT David JOHNSON (War of 1812) , son

of Windsor JOHNSON (b 9 May 1761, d 16 Nov 185?3, Rev. War) from Addison Co.,

VT.

They are direct ancestors of my contact Jeanette Brooks in Niagara Co., NY,

who has a letter from one of my WARRENs in Michigan saying that our WARRENs

are related.

Jeanette told me that David and Elizabeth JOHNSON stopped in Cortland County

for awhile to visit relatives on their way to Niagara Co., NY where they

settled, but I don't know whether they were JOHNSONs or WARRENs or both. I

haven't documented any of this yet, but I know that Jeanette has David

JOHNSON's pension. I'm meeting Jeanette on March 20th and hope to find out

more!

I hope this rings some bells with you and your merry band! Thanks so much

for writing (and posting my surnames & web page). I look forward to hearing

from you.

Best,

Karen Mohr - mohr@buffnet.net

A new message, "SWEET Family: Cortland Co, NY, Tioga Co., PA, Crawford

Co, PA," was posted by David Fuller on Sun, 09 Apr 2000

Surname: Sweet, Hopkins

---

NAME: David Fuller

EMAIL: dsfuller@erols.com

DATE: Apr 09 2000

QRYTEXT: SWEET Family: Cortland Co, NY, Tioga Co., PA, Crawford Co, PA

I am looking for Lydia Sweet, born May 4, 1816, died May 24, 1895.

She married Truman Hopkins (3/15/1814, Otsego Co., NY - 2/20/1891, Crawford Co, PA). The marriage was mid November 1837 at the home of Thomas Sweet, Virgil, Cortland Co, NY. Frederick B. Sweet was a witness. In 1891 Frederick B. lived in Potter Co, PA (statement in Truman's civil war pension file).

In the Titusville, PA (Crawford Co) paper that carried Lydia's obituary is a note that her brother "Juid" - perhaps Jude?? - who also lived in Crawford Co, was in town for her funeral.

Lydia and Truman were living in Tioga Co., PA in 1843, when their son Charles was born. They are also listed in the 1860 census in Chatham, Tioga Co., PA. They moved to Crawford CO., PA shortly after 1860.

Lydia and Truman's daughter, Sophrona, married John B. Sweet, who was born in Tioga Co PA about 1837. They were married in Wellsboro, NY on 9/12/1858.

Truman and Charles enlisted for the Civil War in 1862 from Crawford Co, PA. Truman was discharged for illness shortly thereafter in Washington, D.C. John B. Sweet was in the same Civil War unit.

In 1870 both Truman and Charles Hopkins and John B Sweet were living in Livingston Co, Michigan. By 1880 Charles Hopkins was back in Crawford Co, PA. Truman and Lydia were also in PA by 1891 ( actually, there is reason to believe that all were back by 1875 - John B. Sweet's service record indicates he was. His service record also indicates he was in Kansas in the early 1870's.... were Truman and Lydia????)

>From Land Records of Livingston, Co Michigan: see

http://www.LivGenMI.com/dsfuller.htm

John B. Sweet and wife Sophronia A. bought land in Genoa twsp in 1867, sold in 1872 when they were living in Kansas.

Note for future reference, the same records indicate that Ambrose M . Sweet and wife Maria bought land in Genoa twsp in 1869 and sold in 1872....

1830 Census Information:

The 1830 census for Virgil, Cortland Co. NY lists ( at least) three Sweets on page 94.... Thomas, Benedict, and Eber.

1850 Census Information, Tioga Co PA.

According to

http://genforum.genealogy.com/sweet/messages/1047.html

the following Sweets were in Chatham twsp, Tioga Co PA in 1850....

Thomas, aged 65, born, NY

Lydia, 63, NY

Abner, 21, NY

Jude Sweet, 29, NY

Maria, 24, PA

Phila, 3, PA

Martha, 4, PA

A.M. Sweet, 27, NY

Maria, 25, NY

Charles Sweet, 27, NY

Susan, 25, NY

Jude,1,PA

Abner,3, PA

This web page speculates that A.M. is Ambrose... remember the Michigan land records.

So, the following questions are asked.

Who are Lydia Ann Sweet Hopkins' parents? In particular, is Thomas her father? Is this the same Thomas (and wife Lydia) who lived in Tioga in 1850?

Is Thomas the same Thomas as in the 1830 Virgil census?

Is the Jude in Lydia's obituary the same Jude in the 1850 census?

Is Frederick B a bother of Lydia?

Who is John B. Sweet, who married Lydia Sweet Hopkin's daughter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

QRYTEXT: I hope someone can help me solve a mystery. Lucy Ann WILLIAMS was born 1844 in Cortland County. At age 1, she went to live with Richard CAPWELL and Huldah WILLIAMS CAPWELL in Troupsburg, Steuben County, NY. She later married Theodore Thompson from Troupsburg.

In the Steuben County Gazetteer, it says this about Richard & Huldah:

Richard CAPWELL was born in New Lisbon, Otsego County, in 1803. In early manhood he moved to Marathon, Cortland County, and in September, 1837, emigrated to this town (Troupsburg), locating where his son, James CAPWELL now lives. He was a carder and cloth-dresser by trade, and built a fulling and carding-mill at the junction of Troups and Works creeks, where he carried on business many years. His wife was Huldah WILLIAMS by whom he had one child, James, of this town, born January 12, 1837. Richard Capwell died December 3, 1875 and his wife September 24, 1885, aged seventy-six years. March 22, 1859, James Capwell married Polly A. Reynolds, who was born June 9, 1837.

It does not mention Lucy Ann WILLIAMS CAPWELL at all, but the 1855 Troupsburg census shows her as an adopted daughter, age 11 living with.

Corcoran Family of Cortland, Onondaga & Tompkins Counties

Posted by Anne Ruggeri <MuskratBay@aol.com> on Tue, 18 Apr 2000 Tompkins

County Rootsweb. Copies to Cortland County and Onondaga County.

Surname: Corcoran, Maher, McKenna, Winchell, Wilkins, O'Brien, Kehoe,

Donnelly, Lynch, Kennedy, McGinn

Looking for information on JOHN H. CORCORAN of Trumansburg or Ithaca. I

believe he died August 31, 1932. (Would anyone have access to his obituary?)

He is buried in St. Agnes Cemetery in Syracuse with his father and mother,

PATRICK & ANN MCKENNA CORCORAN, his sister JANE (JENNIE) CORCORAN, brothers

JAMES CORCORAN. A brother, HUGH CORCORAN is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in

Dewitt.

He was born in Orville (I think all the children may have been), then moved

to Cortland. His mother ran a boarding house 58 E. Court Street. Ann died in

1905, living at her daughter Mrs. William F. (Mary?) Maher's house, 5 Hubbard

St.

JOHN had worked at Wick wire, was a good ball player (the team won a state

championship), and was also a Police Officer in Cortland. I think he was

survived by a daughter, at least.

HUGH died in 1931, was a carriage trimmer, ran a store specializing in

tobacco and liquor products and also ran a Hotel on Port Watson St. in

Cortland. He moved to Syracuse, and worked at EW Edward's Department Store

for a number of years. He was supposedly survived by a son JAMES E. CORCORAN

of Ithaca. (James may have died in October 1967, the SSDI says 13073, Groton,

Tompkins, NY) (Would anyone be able to locate this obit?)

Another brother, WILLIAM CORCORAN, was a lawyer. He was a law student in the

late 1800's in Cortland, then lived in Seattle, Washington when Ann (1905),

Hugh (1931) and John(1932) died. No idea yet when he died or where, yet.

MRS. WILLIAM F. MAHER (probably MARY) had a daughter EILEEN who married CARL

A. WINCHELL. They had a daughter MARIE ANTOINETTE WILKINS who lived in NYC

and in Kansas, but was a singer and stage performer. Took over for Lili Ponds

at least once in NYC. (There are other Maher and Winchell children, but I'm

not sure of them right now.) I haven't any idea when she died either. Carl

probably died in the late 1950's or early 1960's. the last address I know of

is 38 Greenbush Street, a maroon home with gold trim, I think.

Any further information on this family would be great.

PATRICK & ANN MCKENNA CORCORAN, his sister JANE (JENNIE) CORCORAN, brothers JA

MES CORCORAN. A brother, HUGH CORCORAN is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in

Dewitt.

He was born in Orville (I think all the children may have been), then moved

to Cortland. His mother ran a boarding house 58 E. Court Street. ANN CORCORAN

died in 1905, living at her daughter MRS. WILLIAM F. (MARY?) MAHER'S house, 5

Hubbard St.

JOHN CORCORAN had worked at Wick wire, was a good ball player (the team won a

state championship), and was also a Police Officer in Cortland. I think he

was survived by a daughter, at least.

HUGH CORCORAN died in 1931, was a carriage trimmer, ran a store specializing

in tobacco and liquor products and also ran a Hotel on Port Watson St. in

He was a favorite son of New York from some history I have found but I am more interested in who his father and mother were since the family Bible doesn't reveal that information. Any information on Judge Parker would be appreciated also any references you might be able to provide thankyou for any help. Do you have any links that would link Alton B. Parker to Ely S. Parker the Brigadeer General who served in the Civil War with Ulysses S. Grant before he became President of the United States? While it isn't well taught in U.S. History Ely Parker saved the life of Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War by preventing him from riding right into the enemy lines with his several high ranking members of his staff. A southern officer confirmed this as true following the war. Both these great men had passed the Bar exam although one wasn't allowed to practice since he was an American Indian. Is it possible that Alton was related to Ely S. Parker and that Ely taught him law through home schooling?

I was beginning to think our Rice list had fallen to the Love Bug!! Glad

to see were still on.

I have learned that Eugene L. Rice 1858-1918, Syracuse, NY., was the son

of Charles Carroll Rice, 1834-1890, Solon, Cortland County, NY. The

father of Charles was Rufus Rice, 1792-1872, who reportedly came from

Vermont. He settled in Cortland county, and raised a family of 10 boys

and one girl.

Rufus Rice 1822-1894

Lafayette F. Rice

Darwin Raymond Rice

Septimus Stevens Rice

Benjamin Franklin Rice

John Stevens Rice

Lurilla Annette Rice

Ralph Randolph Rice

Charles Carroll Rice (my ancestor)

Rufus' wife was Lurilla Stevens, a Connecticut line already well

documented.

His father was Moses Rice, and this family also has connections to

Washington Co., NY. It was reported that Rufus began teaching there at

the age of 16. I also find a Col. Clark Rice buried in Washington Co.

Possibly a relative that Rufus named his son after? Does this ring any

bells with anyone?

By way of introduction, I am John Willis HOOD, researching the WHEELOCK surname for an old high school classmate of mine, Cynthia Ann (WHEELOCK) HARPER, b. abt 1936, and lived in or near Cortland, NY about 1936-1939. Her father was Lewis WHEELOCK and he married Ruth WHEELOCK. The parents of Lewis WHEELOCK, JR. were LEWIS WHEELOCK, SR. and his wife, Elizabeth (O'SULLIVAN) WHEELOCK, was born in Ireland. Lewis was a sailor in WW II. It is believed that Lewis WHEELOCK, SR. lived in Cortland, NY and was a long-term resident of this area. The birth certificate of Lewis WHEELOCK, JR. states NY as the State of Birth.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance, I remain:

Very respectfully,

JOHN WILLIS HOOD, USN (Ret) & DoD USCS (Ret)
