Interments in the SOUTH AMENIA CEMETERY

CLASSIFICATION: Churchyard.
LOCATION: Midway between South Amenia and Amenia Union, on the south side of the road.
CONDITION: Well cared for.
INSCRIPTIONS: 427 in number. Copied by L. Van Alstyne of Sharon, Conn. See page 128 of "Burying Grounds of Sharon. Coon., Amenia and North East, New York", printed 1903.
REMARKS: Known as South Amenia Cemetery. When the Round Top Meeting House at Amenia Union was torn down in 1786 a new church was built at this point. The second building was followed by a third, called the "New Church of South Amenia". Some stones in this yard bear dates prior to 1786, which probably indicates removal from other places.

NOTE: I have received some additional names of individuals buried in this cemetery and not mentioned in Poucher's book. They have been added at the bottom of this page. Lynn.

Notes: There is a broken tombstone between the tombstones of Leonard and Harriot Reed. It's broken off at the base, so no inscription exists. Most of these tombstones are in very very bad shape, although a couple are in astoundingly good shape.

If anyone is looking for the Reeds of Dutchess County; Capt. James and Joanna (Castle) are the ones they're going to be looking for, as they're the first ones who moved here from Connecticut. John REED Came to America 1660. This is the patriarch of the family in America. He is NOT buried in Amenia. In the late 1880's, his descendants erected 2 memorials to him. One is the one in the Amenia Cemetary. The other was at his actual grave at "Reed's Farm" in Norwalk, CT. The source for this is both the writings of the late Newton Reed and The Amenia Times newspaper.
