GAY, RATHBONE. Seeking descendants of John GAY and his wife Elizabeth RATHBONE. John GAY first appears in Rhode Island records February 14, 1720, at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Rathbone. By 1733/34 he was listed as a taxpayer in Great Nine Partners Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY. In 1738 he occuplied and owned Water Lot No. #1 at Crum Elbow, the area being referred to as "Gay's Landing". A possible explanation of how John Gay came to Dutchess County may be found in the affairs of his father-in-law, Thomas Rathbone of Rhode island. Hendrick Ten Eyck, a mariner of New York City, and one of the Nine Partners, in 1698, sold one-fourth of his interest to John Rodman and William Huddleston of New York, who sold their right, in 1699 to Thomas Rathbone. Over a period of time, Thomas Rathbone conveyed shares of this purchase to several of his children. It was during this period that John Gay moved to Dutchess County. They are listed in the 1774-1779 tax lists for Northeast, and 2-1763-1771 in Sotheast. Children: John b. abt 1770, lived Pine Plains; Daniel b. 1773-4, settled in western NY; Richard T. (Tompkins?) b. 1776 prob. in Dutchess Co. He's burried in Richard Gray Burial Ground; Hannah b. 1780 m. Ed. REYNOLDS; Lydia b. 1782 m. Abel ELDRIDGE; Jane b. 1784 m. Almira was the daughter of Caleb FINCH and Deborah (?). I have their Bible with names and b. dates of all 10 of their chidlren, prob. the only place they are recorded as NY didn't keep vital records until 1880. Richard GRAY was prob. in the exodus from Harwich and Yarmouth on Cape Cod in the 1740s. If the list of Caleb and Deborah Finches children would help anyone I'd be happy to send it. GREGORY, LEE. Seeking date of birth (month, day, and year) and parents names for William GREGORY, who is possibly the son of Philo (unsure of spelling) GREGORY and Sarah (last name unknown). Supposedly the parents are buried in S. Dover Cemetary. Supposedly, they had another son, named Samuel or Silas who married Ann Burton. William GREGORY moved from Dover to Clove where he was superintendent of an iron mine and owned a 500 acre farm. He and his wife, Lucy Lee, are buried in Clove cemetary. The dates on the headstone read William Gregory 1830-1916 and Lucy Lee his wife 1831-1903. William GREGORY and Lucy LEE and their children are listed on page 109 in the second edition of an old book titled John Lee of Farmington, Hartford Co., Conn. and His Descendents_ dated 1897.
