NYGenWeb County of the Month

The December 1998 NYGenWeb County of the Month has celebrated a year of honors and state-wide recognition, historical re-enactments, family reunions and fun festivities. Happy 200th Birthday, Oneida! In addition to bicentennial best wishes, this award recognizes Oneida County's importance to Erie Canal and Mohawk Valley history and this site's overall excellence as a GenWeb county.

The entry page to the Oneida site is quiet and elegant. Visitors receive a cordial welcome from Coordinator Kevin Miller, who presents a menu of this month's offerings, followed by the dessert at the end - a small link that says "Click Here" to enter. Of course, we all want to sample dessert first so we do just that and arrive at the full table of contents, each link beckoning - "Try Me First". Would you like to start off with some vital records, and have your history later? Perhaps you need to learn more about the town your ancestors were in, and then explore it's neighbors, just in case someone moved across the way. Whatever you choose, we're sure you'll return again and again, as this site has it all.

Bibliography: important county books with full publication information

Townships: table of towns with brief history and name of current historian

VITAL RECORDS
Census: heads of families for 1800; chart showing growth of town populations, and splitting off of towns, from 1800 - 1892

Marriage Records: from newspapers or indexes from DAR records, spanning the late 18th century through the early 20th

Cemeteries: conveniently listed in table form, by township (24 towns); location, whether ever cataloged, computerized, and if a cemetery is active or not

Oneida's webmaster Kevin Miller deserves special recognition for his dedication in planning and carrying through month after month. For well over a year he has typed virtually every single item himself in his spare time, with the help of only one recent typing volunteer, Laura Perkins. Oneida GenWeb has grown and Kevin needs assistance to keep up the pace. Maybe you have experience typing on a computer or something new to add to the menu. Please think about it as you enjoy one of the Mohawk Valley's finest sites.
