The first NYGenWeb County of the Month for 1999 is Allegany County, hosted by Vivian Karen Bush. In the one short year that Karen has hosted the site, it has grown to become a premiere NYGenWeb county, as it seeks to emulate New York state's motto "Excelsior - Ever Upward" it proudly displays on its opening page.

Perhaps the first thing that strikes you when you first visit the Allegany page is its simple organization and whimsical design. It is warm and welcoming, and somehow you just know you will find something of interest there.

FROM THE WHIMSICAL --
The background and graphics are updated each month to alert the visitor to new additions. From Mousepad graphics to features on the animals of Allegany County, whimsy abounds adding a bit of humor to the site.

TO THE HISTORICAL--
While human interest items are important, most genealogists visit the pages to find the facts. And facts are everywhere here. Whether you are looking for census records, cemetery listings, or military information, you will find it here.

MAPS: both a map of the whole Holland Land Purchase covering parts of 10 counties of Western New York, and maps that trace the development of Allegany County from 1771 to 1860 are here. Looking at these old maps gives the researcher a better feel for where their ancestors came from, and where they went.

Cemeteries: in the past year, Karen has added 14 cemeteries online and has lookup volunteers for 5 more.

Vital Statistics: Gleanings from the Cuba Patriot and the Friendship Register provide a growing collection of birth, death and marriage records, additions to which are always appreciated.

Census and more: Among the census records online are the 1810 Allegany census and the 1920 New Hudson index. Also in progress are the poor house census records from 1850 to 1910.

When asked about her plans for the future Karen replied:

Focus on the earlier county records -
court, land and probate - and
older cemetery lists made in the early 1900s since these lists often recorded tombstones that are no longer readable or have been destroyed. Get much more discussion on the NYAllegany Mailing List which now has 169 subscribers.

Thank you from Karen

To the patrons of Allegany County, NY GenWeb, I would like to thank. I receive so many letters of encouragment and thanks. There are several people who have contributed information about there own families to the web page. There are three people though, who have generously contributed information (or posted information on their personal web pages) that is not only their families, but concerns the community at large.

They are Judy Cwikliski, Kelly Krause and Carol Barber.
