Glimpses of Victorian British Guiana

Glimpses of Victorian British Guiana

Compiled by Inge Veecock
(68 pp. softback) Printed by Peacock Press, Georgetown Guyana

Glimpses of Victorian British Guiana is a compilation of cartoons that appeared during the 1890s in the Georgetown newspaper The Argosy. The British Library gave permission to reproduce the cartoons form their microfilms available for research at their Newspaper Library. The cartoons satirize the social attitudes prevailing at the time. They are set into context in the introduction and are grouped in five sections: Plantation Management, Language, The Work of the Parson, The Demon Rum and Meeting Each Other.

Dedicated to Sister Mary Noel Menezes, RSM, formerly Professor of History at the University of Guyana, ‘without whose help and encouragement this work would not have been possible', the book contains a short history of Guyana together with an appendix of Sources which includes translations of those parts of the captions in Creolese and Scottish for readers unfamiliar with those dialects.
