The directories of long ago are a wonderful tool for discovering additional information
about your ancestors. Just like the telephone books of today, most people were included in these directories. Lain's Brooklyn & Long Island Business Directory of 1892 lists: Only businesses & professional people (including farmers ) living in 33 localities in Kings (excluding city of Bklyn), Queens (including present day Nassau) & Suffolk counties. The front section of this book, includes the City of Brooklyn "Yellow Pages", which is organized by occupation. To search this section, you must know your ancestor's profession. Note: There are no plans, at this time, to transcribe the "Yellow Page" section for this website. As for the Long Island section, more towns will be added, to the website, as they are completed - so check back often. These directories, as well as additional Bklyn & LI Business Directories for the years 1889 thru 1897 (as well as Boyd's 1864/5 LI Directory) can be found, in their original book form, at the library of the Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead. |
