Mrs. Ogden Catskill   March 23d, 1812

In behalf of the Church of which you are a member, I write you this letter.  As you know the circumstances to be, you may think it strange you have not heard from us before this time.  But be assured you have not been forgotten by us.  We have been hoping and I believe praying, to receive the confession you encouraged us you would sign for the satisfaction of your brethren and sisters with whom you are in solemn covenant.  The Church, now nearly despair of your complying with their request which we suppose to be according to the gospel rule, we wish to treat you with kindness, and in so doing we must be faithful.  This we have promised.  We request once more of you, if you can do it in sincerity, that you should sign that confession and send it to us with as little delay as possible.  If you should decline to do this, we think it a duty to inform you of the course we shall pursue.  Should we be disappointed in the satisfaction we hope to receive from you, the next step we shall take is this:  We shall request the Revd David Harrowar with the aid of his brethren in the Church of Sidney, to deal with you accordingly, as we are directed in the 18th Chapter of Mathew.  If he with his brethren should fail of success we shall then suspend you according to the rules of the Church, and refer your case to the Presbytery in their Session of June next.  Soon after this if you give no satisfaction we shall proceed to the painful act of excommunication.  We pray we may not be driven to this extremity:  it is easy for you if your heart is right with God to prevent it.  May God give you grace to do your duty--  The business is now in Mr. Harrowar’s hands, as he will inform you.

Signed in behalf of the Church Session

Mrs. Elice Brown                                                Catskill   March 23, 1812

In behalf of the church I am requested to inform you that for your violation of the gospel rule by the habit of intoxication or intemperate drinking, we have voted to suspend you from gospel privileges.  What might further to be done respecting your case will be referred to the Presbytery in their next June Session.  If we should hear of a thorough reformation in you, and you should exhibit the visibility of true repentance, we shall rejoice at any moment to take off this censure.  While we send a letter of recommendation to Mr. Brown, expressing his good and regular standing in the Church, it is painful to be under the necessity of sending one so different to you.  Faithfulness to the cause of Christ requires it.  Our prayer is that God may give you repentance unto life.

Signed in behalf of the Church Session

Mrs. Julia Ogden                                                In a letter to your Sister Mrs. Whiteford you enclosed the confession signed by yourself which the Church agreed should be satisfactory.  With Mr. Ogden we have held conversations and from him have received several letters in which he utterly refused his consent that the confession should be read in public before the congregation.  What we request by this letter is, to know your feelings respecting this matter.       Our presumption is that you have no objection that the confession be read in public, but we are not disposed to act without your consent:  We are not disposed to extort anything from you, which you cannot do voluntarily.  We are fully agreed that this is the right and only way of settling the matter.      We send you this letter that we might assertain your feelings --  and have come to this conclusion; to postpone the reading of the confession till the first Sabbath in January.  If we hear nothing from you between this and that time, we shall then read the confession before the congregation, and immediately after, shall give you a letter of recommendation --  But should you previously to that time inform us that you are unwilling that we should make the confession public, we shall not proceed.  In this case the difficulty will remain unsettled.    Mrs. Ogden, be assured we feel tenderly for you; we hope we are seeking your good; as well as the happiness of the Church.       We cannot think you would have us sacrifice the discipline of the Church.  Christ’s cause is precious, and wounds in the house of Christ’s friends are deeply felt.  We hope and pray you may have right feelings in this case.   If we hear nothing more from you before the time mentioned, the affair will be set’led.

NB    If you are disposed to answer this letter, you will place your letter in the hands of Mr. Wright [immediately] after you receive this, so that the information from you may be sure to reach us, rembering (sic) that if you are willing the confession should be made public there will be no occasion for your writing at all –

2.  The minutes of the last meeting were read
3.  Mrs. Ogden’s case was attended to.  It appears that after the meeting and resolution of Feby 19th Mrs. Ogden called upon some of the members of the Church and particularly upon Dr Porter, then talked freely and appeared to manifest a humble disposition.  She stated the situation in which she was placed in respect to Mr. Ogden and his mother.  She said that as it respected herself she would be willing to make her confession as public as her profession had been:  (ie before the full congregation on Sabbath day) but situated as she was, she earnestly desired that it might suffice to have it read on a lecture day, or before the Church at the communion, after the congregation was dismissed.  She also stated that her connections, as well as herself understood that this would be satisfactory to the Church, when they first begun to deal with her, before she removed out of town, that she could not get her connections to consent to any more than this, and in that they did not consent to this, until they saw her distress before this account, while lying upon a sick bed, from which she was not likely to be recovered to health.  Taking these circumstances into consideration, it is Resolved that the celebration of The Lord’s Supper which was to take place the next Sabbath shall be postponed to the Sabbath after.  And that the preparatory lecture be preached Thursday afternoon in the Meeting House, when Dr Porter shall read Mrs. Ogdens confession publicly; at the same time he shall state in few words our reasons for having it read on a lecture day.  After which Dr Porter shall send her a letter of recommendation in order that she may unite with some church in her vicinity.  Also Resolved that tomorrow evening when the Church members will be most of them together at the prayer meeting, Dr Porter shall request the members to stay until the others have withdrawn, and then he shall state to them the manner in which we have conducted the business and our reasons for this resolution.

Present           the Moderator              David Porter
Elders:  Nathan Elliot, Thomas Hale, Nathaniel Hinman,  Ezra Hawley, Hezekiah Thayer, Elisha Wise

                        1.  Opened by Prayer
                        2.  Samuel Hull’s case was attended to.  It appears that he was suspended from Church privileges on the third day of June 1812 and
that his case was to be referred to the Presbytery at their meeting in a few weeks from that time but as he manifested a
willingness to attend to advice from the session, it was thought best not to make his suspension public at that time, and also to
delay the representation of it to the Presbytery.  In the month of February last he drew up and signed a confession, which he
handed to our Pastor.  He was than about leaving town.  Since his return, within a full week back, his conduct appears upon
evidence, to have been such, as to oblige us to make his suspension public, and refer his case to the Presbytery at their next
session.  Voted unanimously that our Pastor publish the same before the congregation tomorrow, and that the Presbytery be
advised with at their next session, respecting his excommunication –
                        3.  The moderator informed the session that Elder Ezra Hawley and himself had according to previous arrangment and leave of the
Session in this case, called on Clarissa wife of Russel Austin & Eliza wife of Abner Austin, who had letters of recommendation.
One from the Church in Sheffield, the other from the Church in Hudson.  And after examination thought best to receive them, and
                            they are received accordingly.

                        1.  Meeting opened by prayer
                        2.  The case of Ann Van Bergen was taken up and after consultation, Resolved to the (sic) refer the same to the advice of the
Presbytery at its January session.  The circumstances appear to be as follows.  She was first married to Cornelius Lane.  After
living with him several years, they parted, and he connected himself with another woman with whom he still lives in
Massachusetts.  She was then married with David Van Bergen with whom she still lives.  Within a year or two past she supposes
that she has experienced a change of heart.  Being desirous to connect herself with our church she relates the above circumstances
which we deliberated upon and agreed to attend to her examination for admission, which examination was satisfactory as to
personal piety, but not as to the testimonials of her former conduct and her present situation, we being doubtful upon further
consideration, respecting the morality of her connection with David Van Bergen.  She has handed us two certificates, one signed
by Ann Hubbard her daughter by Cornelius Lane which states that she was knowing to her father’s leaving her mother and living
with another woman before her marriage to D. Van Bergen.  Mr. Van Bergen also states that she has no certificate of the second
marriage and that it will be difficult if not impracticable to obtain one at present –

This admonition was such as to meet the views of the brethren and sisters of the Church, but to our great grief it was not well received be (sic) the person to whom it was addressed –

After a kind and tender effort of the Moderator to explain more fully our affection to her and interest her favourable reception of the admonition which entirely failed, or only produced unpleasant remarks from her, the Session adjourned to meet again next Wednesday evening.

                        Meeting opened by Prayer

Mr. Hyde made report that he had called on Mrs. Naoma Prout first alone and afterwards in company with Hezh Thayer, Elder --  That he conversed with her largely relative to her conduct with her daughter, but could obtain no satisfaction  --  The Session therefore unanimously resolved to cite her to appear before the Session to be holden at the house of the Revd D. Porter on Thursday the 10th day of April next at 6 O Clock P.M.  The following is the citation with the charges accompanying.

                        Mrs. Naoma Prout

We the Session of the Church of Christ of which you are a member deem it out duty to inform you that your conduct for some months past relative to your daughter has been such as to exsite grief and astonishment in the minds of your christian brotherin & sisters and to bring dishonor and reproach to the cause of Christ.

Mr. Wilks Hyde one of the Elders having taken the first & second Gospel steps with a design to bring you to a sense of your guilt and to exhort you to humble yourself before God and your brotherin and sisters in the Church for your unchristian conduct  --  which endeavor? having proved in affectual and no satisfaction having been obtained, we are now under the painful necessity of citing you to appear before the Session to answer to the following charges.  (Viz

1st            Gross imposition on your rightous & christian friends in artfully concealing from them the real situation of your daughter.

2d            In administering such medicine to your Daughter in a state of pregnancy and in commensing and long persisting in such a mode of treatment as was calculated greatly to endanger her life and the life of her child --  and that you did this ??? having every evidence which the nature of the case would admit that your daughter was in the state above described.

3d            That but a little previous to the birth of your daughters child, when you well knew that her situation was critical and that her ??? pain had commenced you did attempt to send away the Watchers there present and to be left with your daughter alone --  That you would not suffer the Watchers to call to your assistance women who were then under the same roof, and that you did by this conduct greatly indanger the life of both the Mother and the child

4th            That after the birth of the child you did inhumanly and unnaturally withhold from it any attention and solemly declare that neither you nor your daughter would have anything to do in preserving its life.

To substantiate the foregoing charges we shall rely on the Testimony of

                                                                                                Doctor A. Brace

Opened by Prayer

Proceeded to the hearing of witnesses in case of Neomi Prout, who had given no satisfaction to the brotheren who had taken with her the first and second gospel steps.

Mrs. Mary Wetsill being duly sworn testified that some time in the Month of November last, Sally Prout Daughter of Neomi Prout told her in confidence that while living with Gilbert Oakley in Catskill (she believed in the Month of July) when she awoke one morning she found the said Oakly in bed with her and in the act of violating her chastity, that she the said Sally said that she believed he the said Oakly had before taken the same liberties, as she was in the habit of sleeping very sound, that she the witness aquainted the mother with all that Sally recited to her and that the mother requested her not to make the thing public until it should ascertained whether Sally was pregnant or not.  That she would make critical examination after five months and let her the witness know.  That before the time mentioned Sally was confined to her bed and continued so to be until the birth of her child --  That the mother however assured the witness that she had examined the appearance of her daughter and was persuaded that she was not in a state of pregnancy. --  The Witness further says – that after the birth of the child the mother declared in her hearing, that she would neither take care of the child herself nor suffer the mother to do it, that the town might take charge of it.

Mrs. Florilla Dogarty

Being sworn, Testified that some weeks previous to the birth of Sally Prout’s child, she the witness called to see her – and told the mother that reports were in circulation that Sally was Pregnant and that she was of that opinion and came to satisfy herself and requested that she might go to the bed for that purpose --  that the mother begged her not to do it as it would greatly terrify? her daughter.

--  that she the witness called again the night before the birth of the child.  That the mother asked her what she thought of Sally then --  that she replied that she was like any woman in that situation-in travel- or words to that effect.  That she the witness inquired who was expected to watch that night, the mother replyed two girls.  That she the witness advised that married women should be engaged to watch – but the mother replied that girls had watched and could again.

That she the witness called the next morning & found Sally with a child –

That the mother asked her the witness what she then thought – That she the witness made answer that it was as she expected – That Mrs. Neomi Prout said the child was not Sally’s but the child of a Monster --  that she would not take care of the child nor suffer the daughter to do it even if she got well.

That she the witness called the 3d or 4th evening after the birth of the child and saw Sally’s breasts, that she found on them Black wool black flannel Indian Meal Campphur and she believed Brimstone  --  That Mrs. Prout told her that their application was made to take the ??? from her breast --  That she the witness told her they would dry up the milk, that Mrs. Prout replied that that was the very purpose for which they were put on.

The witness further testifies, that a few days after the birth of Sally’s child Mrs. Proust told her that she had been made aquainted with Sally’s exposure with G. Oakly about two months after it took place

John Powers                             Being duly sworn- testifies that he was by the bed side of Sally a few days previous to her confinement and discovoured as he thought uncommon fullness of breasts.

Mrs. Ruth Croswell                  Being duly sworn—Testifies that about two months before the birth of Sally’s child, she was by her bedside with a ??? to examine her situation--  That she put her hand on her breasts and perceived that they were full & hard which with some other appearances she thought indicated that she was in a state of pregnancy.

Mrs. Nancy Whittlesey            Being duly qualified, said that some weeks previous to the confinement of Sally Prout, she called to aquaint Mrs. Prout with the reports that were in circulation relative to her daughter and requested her honestly & solemly to tell her whether these reports were true or not—That Mrs. Prout assured her that she had discovered nothing in favor but every thing against her daughter’s being in a state of Pregnancy.

Miss Rachel Bellamy                 Was sworn & testified that she was present when Mrs. Whittlesey made inquiry of Mrs. Prout relative to her daughter and that Mrs. Prout replyed to her as above stated or in words to the same effect—that she and Mrs. Whittlesy went away satisfied, saying to Mrs. Prout that they should in future contradict the malicious reports.

Mrs. Mary Dunavan                 Being duly sworn, Testified that some days after the birth of Sally’s child, she was called to nurse – that she found on Sally’s breasts black wool, black flannel and Indian Meal and that Mrs. Prout told her that they were put on to dry up the milk --  That Mrs. Prout further said that Sally had suffered one day and the child might the next, that she would take no care of it --  That in the course of conversation with Mrs. Prout she told her that she had no suspicion that Sally was pregnant until the child was born.

Miss Ann Hale              Being duly sworn testified that she with Nelly Chittenster watched with Sally Prout the night she was put to bed, that Sally was at times in great distress, that Mrs. Prout lay down – got up about 12 Oclock went to the bed—did some things for Sally—left her for a short time, returned again to the bed sat with one hand under the bed clothes, seemed to be supporting her in various ways some times had one hand under back—Sally said her pain was in her back and her bowels --  Mrs. Prout requested the witness & the other watchers to go after her daughter MaryAnn, but they did not incline to go—soon after the witness heard a child cry & asked what it was—Mrs. Prout replyed calmly, that there was a child in the bed

Miss Nelly Chittenster            Being duly sworn Testified, that she watched with Sally the night she was put to bed-that she was in great distress—said her pain was in her back & bowels—that Mrs. Prout said no, her pain was in her side & ribs—that Mrs. Prout requested her & the other watcher to go and call her daughter but she did not incline to go—that soon after she heard a child cry and that Mrs. Prout said there was a child in bed.

The foregoing evidence was taken in presence of Mrs. Prout and she had full liberty to ask the witnesses any questions she thought proper.

In testimony of each individual was read after being committed to writing and was allowed both by the person testifying and Mrs. Prout to have been substantially correct.

After a critical view of all the evidence taken in this trial, the Session are of the opinion that Mrs. Neomi Prout stands convicted under the charges alledged—In this opinion they are unanimous.  Therefore,

Resolved, that Mrs. Neomi Prout be suspended from the fellowship and communion of our church.

Resolved that the Session adjourn to meet at the Village School house on Wednesday next at 6 O Clock P.M. and that the Moderator then make known to Mrs. Prout the decision of the Session in her cause.

Lemuel Hall member of the church appeared before the Session & acknowledged that he had been guilty of intemperate use of ardent spirits & requested that the Session would proceed against him without the formality of a trial and then retired.

The following is a brief  exhibition of his case.  He had formally been delt with for the same offence, & by a publick confession and promise of reformation, was restored to the charity & fellowship of his brotheren & sisters in the church.  But to their great grief they soon discovered him indulging in the same sinful practice—and tho, several of the brotheren had with christian affection admonished & intreated him to abstain from the use of ardent spirits, their admonitions had no lasting effect—after short intervals of abstinence, a more unrestrained indulgence would succeed:  Christian labor, thus appearing to be useless and no rational exhortation of reformation entertained, the Session unanimously

Resolved  That Lemuel Hall be excluded from the fellowship & communion of the church.

make a Public confession if the Session judged it expedient.  After a deliberate consideration of the case the Session were of opinion
that the offence had not so generally known as to render a public confession necessary; & that nothing more in the case was
required than an affectionate admonition from the Moderator.  --  After such admonition was given, the Session closed by Prayer.

Pursuant to the vote of the Session, the Bretheren Hezekiah Thayer & Ezra Hawly in company with the Revd D. Porter, called on Mrs. Sally Robb to take the prescribed steps of gospel discipline—She appeared to be convinced of her unchristian like conduct and make a full and ample confession of which the following is a coppy.

“Whereas the following charges have been made out against me by the Session of the Church of which I am a member

Viz            1st that I have been guilty of gross slander; 2dly of ungrateful & unchristian treatment of several members of the church, 3dly of using expressions impious and inconsistent with the christian character.

This is to signify that the above charges are strictly true and I hereby acknowledge my fault in those instances above mentioned.

In looking at the case & looking into my own heart as far as I have been enabled to do, I frankly own that I have sinned and am willing to humble myself before God and implore his forgiveness and I ask the prayers & forgiveness of every one of my brothers & sisters of the church whose characters I have misrepresented in any manner or spoken whatever or have grieved or offended---praying also that I may be kept in future from evil and that myself & all the members of the church may ??? worthy of our high vocation & that ere long in God’s own time we may all meet in that blessed world when then will be no more sin, and where sorrowing & sighing will be forever done away.

                                                                        (Signed)  Sally Robb

Catskill  January 23d 1822

                                                                                    A true Coppy

The next day after the above confession was made & signed, Mrs. Sally Robb remanded it assigning as a reason that she could not make the confessions therein expressed & that she would not have it presented to the church—The confession was accordingly returned to her & she immediately left this place since which no measures have been taken relative to her case.
