Coxsackie District Tax List

located at the
State Library in Albany, 11th Floor, Manuscripts Division. There are two
separate tax lists, both for Coxsackie and appear to be separate districts
within the Town. The issuing letters demanding that the taxes be levied were
both signed at Coxsackie on the 1st of December 1787 and the taxes were to be
remitted by the first Tuesday of March 1788.
By Virtue of the Powers vested in Me,
I REQUIRE and Command you, to GATHER, LEVY, COLLECT and RECEIVE, of and from all and every Person or Persons, charged within the annexed TAX-LIST or ESTIMATE, amounting in all to the Sum of Two hundred & fourteen pounds three shillings in BILLS of CREDIT, issued by Virtue of an Act, entitled, “An Act for emitting Two Hundred Thousand Pounds, in Bills of Credit, for the Purposes therein mentioned,” Passed 18th April 1786, and GOLD, and SILVER COIN, so that you may HAVE and PAY the same to JOHN N. BLEECKER, County Treasurer, on or before the first TUESDAY of MARCH next, retaining to yourself Six Pence per Pound for collecting. ---And if any Person or Persons shall deny, refuse or neglect to pay unto you, the several Sum or Sums of Money, he, she or they are charged with as aforesaid, it shall and may be lawful, for you to distrain such Person or Persons, his, her or their Goods and Chattels; and the Distress or Distresses so taken, to dispose of as the law doth direct.
HEREOF you not to FAIL at your Peril, and for your so doing, this shall be your sufficient Warrant. GIVEN under my Hand and Seal, at Coxsackie the First Day of December in the Year of our LORD One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-Seven.
