“The Philomathean Society was formed in 1793 at Union College, Schenectady, by young men in town, at the old Academy, before a college charter was granted. It was first called the “Callopean” and it held its first meeting under its present name in October 1795. It celebrated its semi-centennial (somewhat behind time) in 1848.”
