Evelyn Van Voorhis, 85, of Preston Hollow, New York passed away at the Arden Hill Hospital in Goshen, New York on November 28, 2009.  She was born in Preston Hollow, New York on March 14, 1924 daughter of the late James and Eleanor Mae (Mercer) Sanford. 

She was a 60 year member of the Potter Hollow Grange #1555; serving as Master, Lady Assistant Steward, Flora, Flag Bearer, Gate Keeper and Lecturer.  After the Potter Hollow Grange closed, she became a member of the Hiawatha Grange.  She was a member of the Albany County Pomona Grange and the State Grange of New York. Evelyn was also a 70 year member of the Preston Hollow Baptist Church and served as a Deaconess, member of the Board of Trustees, Head of the Board of Education and Sunday School Teacher. She also sang in the church choir for many years. 

Evelyn worked at General Electric, Montgomery Ward, served as a Town Assessor, and was a Home Health Aide.  However her greatest joy was serving as a homemaker to her husband and three children.  She believed in the adage “Let Me Live in the House by the side of the road and Be a Friend to Man.” Her door was always open and a cup of tea to all. 

Surviving are two children, Sharon Lynn Chichester (Bruce) of Harriman, New York, Carl Peter Van Voorhis (Carla) of Tannersville, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, James Van Voorhis, Jr. (Sherry), Jeffry Van Voorhis (Susan), Matthew Van Voorhis (Donald), Michael Chichester (Rosemary), Brian Chichester (Andrea), Shawn Chichester (Brooke), Danielle Rothe (John), Jason Van Voorhis (Megan); four great-grandchildren, Timothy Van Voorhis (Jenn), Amy Van Voorhis, Kaci Van Voorhis and Natalie C. Chichester; also a great-great-grandson William J. Van Voorhis, a sister Esther Snyder (Don) and a brother Carl Sanford (Marie).  Her husband Robert Van Voorhis (2001) and a son James Van Voorhis, Sr. (2007) predeceased her.  

Funeral service will be Friday, December 4, 11 a.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, New York.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in the Brookside Cemetery. Those who desire may contribute in her memory to the Preston Hollow Baptist Church or to the Bayard Elsbree Memorial Park, c/o Valorie Lounsbury, Preston Hollow NY 12469.

December 10, 2009 


William R. Porter, III, 48 of New Baltimore, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2009 after a long illness.  Bill was a Navy Sea-Bee Veteran. 

Survivors include his children, William R. Porter, IV and Katie Sprague; parents, William Jr. and Mary K. Porter; brothers, David A. and Kirk D. Porter; and grandchildren, Carlos, James and Henry. 

Funeral services were held Monday, December 7 at St. Patrick’s Church, Ravena under the direction of the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena.

December 31, 2009 


Anna T. Pratt, 77, of Greenville, New York passed away at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn on December 20, 2009.  She was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 14, 1932 daughter of the late Henry and Anna (Koch) Roessler.  In 2001 she retired after 16 years of service to the New York State Senate. 

Anna’s dedication to the Town of Greenville was an inspiration to all. She served in many capacities including Town Bookkeeper from 1970 to 1985, Deputy Supervisor and most recently Assessor’s Clerk.  From the 1970’s to the present day, she actively served as part of the town of Greenville’s Republican Committee and held positions of Chair and Vice Chair giving many hours of service, always with the goal of providing the best and most qualified government for her town.  She served for over 30 years as a member of the Greene County Youth Commission as she was convinced that our future belonged to the children. 

Anna was married to the late John T. Pratt for 50 years and is survived by her daughters; Jane Furko (Robert),  Diane Bischoff (Gregory), Johanna Welter (Douglas), Faith Ann Pratt and Charity Hempstead (Franklin); grandchildren, George Furko, Justin Welter, Dr. Jacqueline Welter-Toth, Carrie Anne Dady and Franklin Hempstead, III, as well as her great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Welter, Cheyenne Welter, Justin Douglas Welter, Jr., Caeben Dady and Isabel Furko. 

Funeral service was December 28 at the A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR81, Greenville, New York.  Friends called at the funeral home on Sunday, December 27.  Interment followed at the Saratoga National Cemetery.  Those who desire may contribute in her memory to the Greenville rescue Squad or to the community Hospice of their choice.
