Robinson, of the town of Windham, and has always manifested a strong attachment to his country’s cause, and was regularly enrolled as musician in the militia, (at his own request) until he was sixty years old.  He attended the celebration at Hunter last Fourth of July, and seemed to enjoy the spirited speeches and toasts of the day as much as any one present.  As a citizen, he was peaceable, and apparently contented, having never had a contested law-suit I his life; as a parent, he was very indulgent; as a neighbor, was very obliging.  His heart and hand were ever open to the wants of the needy; no one could feel lonesome in his company.  He has received a pension from Government for a number of years past.  In August last, he had a shock of Palsy, which was soon followed by another shock, leaving him helpless till death relieved him of his sufferings.  His trust was in the Redeemer for salvation and he died in hope of a part in the first resurrection.      A NEIGHBOR

At Ararat, PA, Feb. 14th, of scarlet fever, IDA MAY, youngest daughter of Garry O. and Nancy M. Baldwin, aged 3 years, 2 months and 14 days.

Darling Ida!  Gone before us
To the haven of her rest;
Little cherub, nurs’d and shelter’d
On a loving mother’s breast.

Scarcely had those eyes been open’d
To the mysteries of Earth;
Scarce the rosy lips had utter’d
Words of love, and infant mirth.

Strange that bud so fondly cherish’d
Resting on its parent stem,
Should expand in realms of glory,
On the Saviour’s diadem.

She was lent – a precious blessing,
Thus the Parents hearts to win;
But from earth our Father call’d her
Ere her soul was marr’d with sin.

Tho’ so young she lov’d the Saviour,
And like him, a cross would bear;
Now her infant voice is praising
Him she loves in glory there.

Sisters! In your sadness mourning,
By the little vacant seat;
Think of her as blest in Heaven,
Waiting, each of you to greet.

You’ve a child among the angels,
Parents meekly kiss the rod:
Christ has said – “Come, little children!”
Such surrounds the throne of God.

Thus are our ties severed, but not forever.  With those who die in the Lord, there is still a communion.  We cherish the recollection of their graces, and while their worth aggravates the sense of our loss, it consoles us.  We are animated by the happy termination of their course.  We long for our reunion with them, and treading in their steps, or rather in the steps of Him whom they followed, we live in the hope, that when He and they shall appear, we shall be like them.

The souls, whom Christ sets free, exultingly shall rise.”

At Bushnellville, April 15th, of consumption, Mrs. MARY A. BARBER, aged 26.

Mrs. Barber had gained the love and esteem of all who knew her, and the tidings of her death fall heavily on the ears of her friends.  In the hour of her affliction she was not forgotten.  Friends rallied to her bedside to cheer her with words of comfort.  Thus in the flush of early years was called to the home of the blessed one of our dearest friends.  And, although the shadows of death came so early, a light came with them that dispels their gloom – the light of Christian faith, bearing evidence that our loss is her eternal gain.  Blessed are they that die in the Lord.  The deceased leaves a husband to mourn her departure.

Farewell, husband!  I must leave you;
God is calling – I must go;
I must say adieu, though trying,
And must leave this world of woe.

Farewell mother, we have parted,
Never more on earth to meet,
But I hope, if God it pleases,
We shall meet at Jesus feet.

Farewell, sister, we are severed
From each other’s kind embrace,
But I hope that I shall meet thee
In that Heavenly resting place.

Farewell brother, don’t be weeping
When you hear that I am gone;
Ah! I pray you to remember
God does nothing that is wrong.

Farewell friends and dear relations;
I have only gone before;
And I hope I’ll someday meet you
On bright Canaan’s happy shore.

Farewell scholars, I must leave you,
In this world of sin and gloom;
If I ever more do meet you
It will be beyond the tomb.

One more word to my kind husband,
Then I’ll bid you all adieu –
Pray to God on high to guide you,
And He’ll be a friend to you.

Once again I’ll say adieu;
Where we’ll meet I cannot tell;
But I hope ‘twill be in Heaven
Fare you well! Fare you well!

May 19, 1859

At his residence, in this village, on Wednesday, May 11th, of typhus fever, BURRIT O. STONE, aged 42 years.

In the death of Mr. Stone, the wife has lost a kind and devoted husband, the widowed mother a fond and dutiful son, and society one of its most valuable and valued members.  It is seldom indeed that one in the prime of life – buoyant with hope, and immersed in business, as he was, is so suddenly taken way by the fell destroyer, and his death affords another painful illustration of the uncertainty of life.  A few short weeks only have elapsed since he came back among us from the field of his active duties and pursuits for the purpose of attending to his business engagements here, being apparently in the usual good health and spirits, but today he is numbered with the dead, and “the places which knew him then shall know him no more forever.”

He was no ordinary man, but was possessed of a mind far above the average, which enabled him many times to comprehend the difficulties of a position, and devise and invent the means of escaping it, in a manner inferior to none – often engaging in enterprises, while those about him were unable to understand the motive which impelled, or the expectations which cheered and encouraged him to the prosecution of them, and consequently given up in despair.  With a mind and temperament peculiar to him, he could not be a neutral man, and was a friend to those in whom he reposed confidence of the warmest and closest kind.

A kinder neighbor did not live.  His friendly disposition prompted him on every occasion to be found among the first and foremost in endeavoring to alleviate the sorrow of the distressed, and ministering to the wants and necessities of the sick and suffering.

There is scarcely a family in the vicinity which has not at some time been the recipient of his kind offices when members of them have been prostrated on beds of sickness.  The first to visit the sick, he was the last to leave the dying, and all will concede to him a more than ordinary inclination to volunteer his services on occasions of this character.

To many a young man just starting in life, without a superfluity of means to aid them in an emergency, he proved almost a benefactor – ever ready as he was o assist them by counsel and suggestions, made valuable by his great experience in the business affairs of life, and often volunteering that support which proved of inestimable value in relieving them from the embarrassments which were threatening a permanent opposition to success.

Among the many who will drop a silent tear to his memory, are members of those just alluded to who to call him friend was to them a source of pleasure and gratification.

Mr. Stone was born in this town, and although, at times, temporarily absent, he has been identified with its history from that time forward, and among the many who were, or have been, residents here, and who are now scattered all over the country, the news of his sudden decease will awaken feelings of the deepest emotion.  They knew him as a man, to all outward appearance, possessed of strong and vigorous constitution, in the meridian of life and with prospects as fair as any one of being permitted to live out the allotted time of man.

But, he is gone!  The angel of death has summoned him away, and while his expectations were as bright and his hopes as strong as ever, the silver cord was loosed, and the golden bowl was broken, and not until after many a revolving year has been numbered with the past will his many manly and noble traits of character fade from the recollection of his wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

In Jewett, on the 10th inst., Mrs. E. DUTTON, aged 73 years.

In Middletown, Orange County, May 8th, HENRY D., son of Mr. S. HALSEY, formerly of this village, aged 27 years.

May 26, 1859

Obituary

The Galveston (Texas) News, of May 17th, has the following in regard to the death of Mr. Stephen Kirkland.  Mr. K. was once a resident of this village and served an apprenticeship here with Capt. William Doty.  He removed to Galveston over twenty years ago.  His many friends in this vicinity will regret to learn of his sudden decease.

“Mr. Stephen Kirkland died yesterday at about 4 A.M., and his funeral took place at about 4 P.M.  It is hard to realize the truth of these words as we write them.  But day before yesterday, Mr. Kirkland was in good health in the meridian of life, blessed with family and friends and with bright anticipations, and now he is mingling with our original dust.  ‘Who can tell what a day may bring forth?’  On Sunday night, Mr. K. as usual after supper lay down on a pallet in the upper plaza of his house.  He was alone but as it was his custom to lay there till near bed time, nothing was thought of it.  About 10 o’clock, he fell from the plaza to the ground and never afterwards spoke, though he lived some six hours.  The cause of his falling nobody knows and it is a matter of mere conjecture.  It may be that he attempted to walk in his sleep, as he had sometimes been known to do.  In his fall, he received fatal injury, causing internal hemorrhage, and all efforts of human skill proved unavailing.  The funeral was the largest we have ever witnessed in this city.  His wife is a member of the Masonic fraternity, by whom his remains were taken charge and buried in accordance with their impressive forms.  All the companies of the Fire Department, of which he had been Chief Engineer, also attended in their uniforms and a large concourse of other citizens by whom the deceased had been known and held in high respect for many years, together with near 100 carriages, each accompanied the remains to their last abode.  Mr. K. was perhaps the oldest mechanic in our city, having settled here more than twenty years ago, and by his industry and energy – his exemplary deportment and strict integrity had contributed aplenty to others prosperity while he had placed himself in the most independent circumstances.  He has left a widow and several children to mourn their sudden bereavement.”

June 2, 1859

In this village, on the 28th inst., TERTIUS GRAHAM, in the 71st year of his age.

Mr. Graham was one of the earlier settlers in this town, having removed here in 1802, and was formerly actively engaged in business.  But few remain to give us information - few that knew him in the prime and vigor of his days.  One or two, possibly, are now living who were here when he came in this place to reside.  Time, as a flood, has carried them away, and the places that once knew them know them no more.  A period exceeding half a century has passed and the old localities are by another generation, or by strangers, occupied.  And such ever has been and will continue to be the notes of time’s history.  The Fathers – where are they?

In Ashland, May 27th of dropsy of the heart, Mr. DANFORTH CLAFLIN, aged 42 years.

Mr. Chaflin was esteemed by all who knew him.  He was attacked at first with typhus fever, and while suffering with this disease, was unconscious.  To the joy and satisfaction of his friends, however, he returned to reason, but was soon violently taken with dropsy of the heart and the Lord said unto him, “time shall be with thee no longer.”

His heart is afflicted no more
With sickness or shaken with pain,
The war in this member is o’er,
And never shall vex him again.

His languishing head is at rest;
It’s aching and thinking are o’er.
His quiet immovable breast
Is heaved by affliction no more.

His breast is no longer the seat
Of suffering and heartbreaking pain;
Its purpose to flutter and beat
And never shall flutter again.

Those fountains can yield no supplies
Whose hollows from water now free
The tears are all wiped from his eyes
That evil he never shall see.

A FRIEND

In the town of Ashland, May 20th, Wm. H. CHAMBERS (colored), aged 18 years.

June 9, 1859

In Hobart, Delaware County, on the 2d. inst. EMELINE McG., infant daughter of Wm. H. and Permelia Sloat, aged 1 year and 19 days.

I take these little lambs, said He,
And lay them in my breast;
Protection they shall find in me –
In me be ever blest.

Obituary

Winans Yeomans, near Gayhead, and on the boundary line between Cairo and Greenville, of this county, died on the morning of Saturday last, with and from the effects of a malignant fungus, situate at the angle of the jaw, and extensively involving the arteries, veins, nerves &c., of that region.

Mr. Yeomans had, within the last two years, suffered two operations under Dr. March, of Albany, for the purpose of extirpating what was supposed, until recently, to be a simple sarcoma tons or fleshy tumor.  Since the last operation, however, something like a year ago, and especially for the last four months, it has grown more rapidly and exhibited more distinctly its true character.  During the past three months, he has endured severe pain, only partially mitigated by powerful opiates.

In addition to a large circle of friends and acquaintances, he leaves a young wife and child to mourn his loss.

Yours hastily,
ALIQUIS

That finds not here an end.
Were this frail world our only rest,
Living or dying, none were blest.

There is a world above,
Where parting is unknown;
A whole eternity of love,
Formed for the good alone.
And faith beholds the dying here
Transmitted to that happier sphere.

Whose blessing made her rich”

Farewell dear parents – a long farewell,
For we shall meet no more,
‘Till you are raised with me to dwell
On Zion’s happier shore.

Your little Charlie now id dead;
The cold and lifeless clay
Has made in dust its silent bed,
And there it must decay.

But is he dead?  No, no, he lives;
His happy spirit flies
To heaven above and there receives
The long expected prize.

Then parents, dry your mournful tears,
From gloomy grief refrain;
In heaven little Charlie appears
And shall forever reign.

Farewell dear parents – again farewell;
Soon you shall come to me,
And when we meet, not tongue can tell
How great our joys shall be.

Obituary

Died, in the town of Windham, September 17th, after a short and painful illness, Mrs. JANE DISBROW, the mother of Melissa Ramsey, aged 75.

Mrs. Disbrow had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 48 years, and by her kind and cheerful disposition, and patient Christian character, had endeared herself to many friends.

“O, when the hours of life are past,
And Death’s dark shade arrives at last,
It is not sleep, it is not rest;
‘Tis glory opening to the blest.

No storms shall ride the troubled air;
No voice of passion enters there;
But, all be peaceful as the sigh,
Of evening gales that breathe and die.

For there the God of Mercy sheds
His purest influence on their heads,
And glides the spirits round the throne
With glory radiant as his own.”

She’s gone, she’s gone, though hard to part
With one that’s nestled in our heart,
Our loss we know is by her gain;
She now with Christ in glory reigns.

A precious flower to us was given,
An angel now she blooms in Heaven;
And now our hearts are sad and lone,
Since little Mary Eel has gone.

We’ll strive to sink into His will,
And hear His voice say “peace be still.”
We feel our hearts are almost broken,
But know to us the Lord hath spoken.

Though bound to earth by kindred ties,
We have an angel in the skies.
We’ll live on earth and strive to meet
Our darling child at Jesus feet.

The deceased came to this place with her parents, October 1799, then a child ten years of age.  She, with her father’s family, suffered all the privations of a new country.  In 1815, she became a subject of grace, and united with the Presbyterian Church, then in its infancy.  After her marriage, she removed to a neighboring town, where she remained about eight years.  On her return to this place, she located near her old home.  She was called to pass through many severe trials and afflictions, all of which she bore with cheerfulness and Christian fortitude, always presenting a bright feature in every new trial, and a cheering word to those in affliction.  She was much beloved by her numerous friends, and her relatives will feel her loss greatly.  But, the greater loss and sorrow is in her own family.  They have truly lost a wise counselor, a faithful adviser and a heart cheering friend, ever ready to help them by word and precept.  “But their loss is her unspeakable gain.”  She has fought the good fight, she has kept the faith, henceforth there is for her a crown of righteousness.
