Katherine Muller


WINDHAM - Katherine Muller, aged 94, died Wednesday Feb. 21 at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1908, in Windham to Frank and May (nee Kissock) Strong. She was a school teacher in the Cairo Central School District for many years.

Mrs. Muller was predeceased by her husband George and son Blair. She is survived by her daughters Margaret Muller of Hudson and Katherine Shumylo of Albany.

A private cremation took place on Feb. 21 at the Wiltwyck Crematory in Kingston.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Decker Funeral Home of Windham.

Ethel Moore


MEDUSA - Ethel Moore, 81, Medusa passed away at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany on March 3. She was born in Westerlo, on April 30, 1920 daughter of the late Walter & Effie (Birch) Clickman.

Ethel was a life long homemaker but also had time to drive a feeder line for the Greenville Central School for over 20 years, she also catered the Durham Auction Barn for several years and was famous for her home made baking especially her wedding cakes. She also had time to operate her gift shop "Ethel's Trash & Treasures". Above all she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Her husband Ivan Moore (the former Highway Superintendent for the Town of Durham perdeceased [predeceased] her in 1995. She was also pre-deceased by a son Wayne Moore, a brother Fred Clickman and a sister Mary Moore.

Surviving are two sons, James Moore and his wife Beverly of Medusa, Wesley Moore and his wife Cindy of Medusa, her grandchildren, James, Melissa and Kristy Moore; a sister Olive Fancher of Westerlo and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service[s] were Tues., 8:30 from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tues. 7 to 8:30 p.m. prior to the service. Interment was on Wednesday in the Potter Hollow cemetery.

Those who desire may contribute in her memory to the Town of Durham Ambulance, the Medusa Vol. Fire Co. or the Oak Hill-Durham Vol. Fire Co.

Joseph Mark Politan

WINDHAM - Joseph Mark Politan, aged 52, formerly of Windham, died Monday, February 25, 2002 at Albany Medical Center. Mr. Politan was born on January 30, 1950 to Eugene and Fay (Fisherman) Politan in Brooklyn. He is survived [by] his sons, Anthony Charles of Cairo, Joseph and Michael of Saugerties, his former wife, Joann, brother Arthur and sister-in-law Jody of Levittown as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were Friday March 1 at Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main Street, Windham. Burial followed at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland.

William Welton Brandt

William Welton Brandt, 72, died March 7 in Bethlehem, PA. He was born July 30, 1929 in East Jewett, son of the late Ernest and Charlotte Francis Brandt. He formerly resided in Windham and Hartford, CT.

Surviving are his wife Rose Fall Brandt of Schnecksville, PA and cousins, aunts and uncles.

Spring interment will take place in the Blue Mountain Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, John St. Saugerties, NY.

Alexander Shumylo

Alexander Shumylo, 79, of Lexington died Monday, March 11, 2002 at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.

Born March 17, 1922 in Manasirok, Ukraine, he was the son of the late Roman and Sonia Paraskieva Shumylo.

Mr. Shumylo was the co-owner of The Lexington Hotel since 1962. He was a member of the Town of Lexington Fire Co and active in many Ukrainian and American organizations.

Survivors include his wife Maria Skulbid Shumylo of Lexington; a son Antoni Shumylo of Lexington; a sister in Ukraine; 4 grandchildren, Roman, Natalie, Lessia, and Jerry Shumylo.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Aston Basagic Funeral Home, 6424 Main St., Hunter.

The Town of Lexington Fire Co will conduct a service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

A mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Ukraine Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Iura Godenciuc.

Interment will follow at the Lexington Village Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Town of Lexington Fire Co and Rescue Squad.

Leonard Mangano

LEXINGTON - Leonard Mangano, 64, Lexington, died Tuesday, March 12 after a long illness.

He was born on March 28, 1932, in Corona to Anthony and Benedetta (nee Bologna) Mangano.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Constance (nee Bartlett) Mangano, his children; daughter Jeanne Sackaris, sons Anthony Mangano and Michael Mangano; siblings, brother Thomas Mangano and sisters Gerrie Spinelli, Alice Savino and Virginia Schank. Also grandson Joseph Sackaris.

Mr. Mangano enjoyed hunting. He and his wife lived in Lexington for 13 ½ years and own the Echo Valley Motel.

There were no calling hours. Private cremation took place at the Albany Rural Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Decker Funeral Home, Windham.

Henry J. Andersen

CAIRO - Henry J. Andersen, 79, of Rolling Meadow Road, Cairo, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at his residence after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 15, 1922 in Norway, and was the son of the late Hamrick and Kristine Andersen.

During his years of employment, Mr. Andersen was a tugboat engineer in New York City. Also, he had a radiant heat business in Cairo.

He was past president of the Cairo Rotary Club and also was a longtime member of the club. He was also an active member of the Sons of Norway, which started in Cairo. He was a longtime member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church of Cairo and also a member of the Shriners Lodge in Brooklyn.

Surviving are three sons, Kenny Anderson, of Connecticut, and Karl Thorkildsem and Lloyd Andersen of Florida; stepson, Victor Stephens of Pennsylvania; two daughters, Lila Leib of Virginia and Ava Yoder of Tennessee; sister Tilly Sjo of Norway; 10 grandchildren, Aubrey and Hayley Anderson of Connecticut, Sara, Aaron and Taylor Leib of Virginia, Alex, Zack, Jacob and Luke Andersen of Florida, and Emily Yoder of Tennessee.

Besides his parents, Mr. Andersen was predeceased by a son, Hank Andersen.

Calling hours will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Resurrection Lutheran Church, Route 23B, Cairo. A memorial service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. A private cremation will take place at Wiltwyck Crematory, Kingston.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Andersen's memory may be made to the Community Hospice, 47 Liberty St., Catskill, N.Y. 12414.

Kathleen Brady

GHENT - Kathleen Brady, 92, formerly of Bethany Village, West Coxsackie, and Eastview Garden Apartments, Cairo, died March 14, 2002 at Green Manor Nursing Home, Ghent, where she had been a resident since 1999.

Born November 22, 1909 in County Kerry, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late John and Ann (McGillicuddy) McCarthy.

She had been an area resident for over fifty years. She and her late husband operated Brady's Tavern on Route 23 in South Durham for 27 years.

She is survived by a niece, Breda Fleming of Portchester and a nephew, Monsgn. Patrick J. O'Shea of San Francisco.

Besides her husband, she is predeceased by her sister May Fay.

Calling hours were Monday, March 18 at the W.C. Brady's Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie from 8 to 9 a.m.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated 9 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Coxsackie. Rev. Fr. John Moyne was the celebrant.

Interment will follow next to her late husband, Thomas, in the family plot of St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, Coxsackie.

Charles P. Memhard

HAINES FALLS - Charles Memhard, 71, of Haines Falls, died Monday, March 18, 2002.

Mr. Memhard served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and went on to receive a B.A. degree from St. Lawrence University. He retired after working 30 years in sales and marketing with Eastman Kodak Co.

He was active with the local mountaintop community, serving as a member of the Rip Van Winkle Lions Club, president of the Twilight Park Association, vice president of the Greene County Planning Board, chairman of the Town of Hunter Planning Board and supervisor of the Town of Hunter.

Mr. Memhard served as a member of the Advisory Board of the Greene County Department of Aging and [was] founder and president of the Greene County Aging Services Foundation.

A great library advocate, Mr. Memhard most recently served as president of the Mid-Hudson Library System (a central library system serving libraries in Greene, Columbia, Ulster, Putnam and Dutchess counties.) He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Hudson Valley Libraries. At his death, he was chairman of the Development Committee of the Haines Falls Library with intentions to seek funds to build a new library.

Surviving are his wife, Lila; son and daughter, Russell and Ann Memhard; and grandchildren, Alexandra and Nicholas Memhard. A memorial service will be held in May, at a date to be announced.

Caroline Clara Atwood

PHILMONT - Caroline Clara Atwood, 87, of Hunt Road, Hillsdale, died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at the Pine Haven Home in Philmont.

She was born Sept. 29, 1914 in Stottville, daughter of the late Henry Fitting Sr. and Clara (Kohlmier) Fitting Sr. She married George E. Atwood Sr. in 1934; he predeceased her in 1976.

A longtime local resident, Mrs. Atwood had been self-employed in the domestic home care field. She was a member of the Harlemville Emanuel Lutheran Church and a member of the former Hillsdale Grange.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Katt of Palenville; two sons, Harold Atwood of Chandler, Ariz. and George Atwood of Hillsdale; four sisters, Elizabeth Andrezcsik and Margaret Molnar, both of Hudson, Elsie Glynn of Craryville, and Marie Shook of West Ghent; two brothers, John Fitting of Columbiaville and Christopher Fitting of Hudson. Also, nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Henry Fitting Jr.

Calling hours were 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, Route 22, Copake. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. David Vogel officiating. Interment will be in the Harlemville German Cemetery.

Windham man killed in crash

WINDHAM - Windham Police Department investigated a one-car accident in Windham that claimed the life of a local man Thursday night.

Nourlan S. Kaldaev, 32, of Windham, died en route to Columbia Memorial Hospital from injuries he sustained in a crash on Vining Road that happened around 9 p.m., police said.

Windham Police Chief George Tortorellis reports Kaldaev was driving the vehicle when it went off the left side of the roadway striking a tree.

Police sta[t]e that weather conditions were a contributing factor to the accident.

Windham Police were assisted at the scene by State Police Catskill, Windham Fire Department, Greene County Sheriff's Office, and the Town of Windham Ambulance.

Elizabeth Mary Marsh

CATSKILL - Elizabeth M. "Lizzie" Marsh, 94, of Catskill, died Saturday, March 23 at Columbia Memorial Hospital's Hospice Unit, where she had been a patient.

Born Feb. 14, 1908 on Bronson Street, Catskill, she was the daughter of the late John and Maria Anunziata (Casaregola) Marsh.

Mrs. [Miss] Marsh attended St. Patrick's Academy and was a seamstress at the former Atlanta Knitting Mills in Catskill.

She was a faithful parishioner of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Rosary Altar Society.

One of her most treasured memories was a pilgrimage she made on Nov. 10, 1930 with her father in Rome where they visited the Catacombs and had an audience with Pope Pious [Pius] XI.

Survivors include two half brothers, Peter Marsh of Catskill, and Erasmo Marsh of Catskill; niece, Marie Haines of Westkill; niece Catherine Decker of Westkill; five nephews, John Marsh, Joseph Marsh of Grand Gorge; Larry Macera of Catskill; Joseph Owen Marsh of Poughkeepsie; Christopher Marsh; niece Theresa DiMasi of Coco Beach, Fla.; niece Josephine Glennon of Albany; as well as several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.

Mrs. [Miss] Marsh was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Marsh and her step-mother, Mary (Amelia) Marsh.

Calling hours were Monday at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill. Members of the Rosary Altar Society attended as a group at 8 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial was conducted Tuesday at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church. Rev. John J. Murphy, Pastor, officiating.

Interment is in the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Catskill.
