Rates of Toll
Susquehannah Turnpike
From
the collection at the Durham
Center Museum, this rate sheet will give researchers an idea of the
costs that were borne by travelers on the old. Road maintenance was not under
governmental control and individual corporations were established to build and
maintain many of the roads in Greene County. Each Toll Gate maintained record
books of those who paid and these ledgers become a valuable tool in identifying
which families were living in a certain locality at specific dates. The Durham
Center Museum has a number of these original ledgers in their collection, which
are available for viewing. Remember, that in the 1800's the letter "s"
as we know it was often written like the letter "f". So, horses looks
like horfes to present readers.
