Welcome to our search engines! GenSeeker is the our original search engine provided by our site's sponsor, Rootsweb Genealogical Data Cooperative, but we have now provided an alternative search engine powered by FreeFind! Please note that the results from the two engines may vary. Also, FreeFind will search both counties at one time, whereas GenSeeker will only search files from each separate county site.
Type in any word and all occurrences of it on the site will turn up. Try the name Devendorf, then Devendorff, Dievendorf, etc. Or Klock and Clock, Grim and Crim, Petrie and Petry. Thanks to the many volunteers and fans of this site, Herkimer/Montgomery Counties GenWeb has the largest number of individual articles of any site in the NYGenWeb. Finding specific articles and queries mentioning your ancestors' surnames has become cumbersome for new-comers and regular researchers alike.

HOW TO USE THIS SEARCH ENGINE
Choosing "Short" brings up a list of files containing your search word. If you select
the "Long" option, your search word will appear in it's paragraph context.
With either choice, you directly link to the file, or page containing the
mention, itself. You will not be taken directly to it's occurrence on a
given page. After you link to a page, use the "Find" function of your browser.
Files generated are ranked in "order of confidence". After testing several
of the earliest surnames I was pleasantly surprised to find well over 100
occurrences of some names. Adding spelling variants brought up more. We
hope you find that this new feature speeds up your browsing experience.
