Four Rivers Historical Society

Organized in 1977, this society averages over 600 members, and has microfilmed the Carthage Republican newspaper. The microfilm is deposited in the Carthage Library. They have published books. Their holdings include a working chapel, and a one room school. Carthage lies on the border of Lewis County, so that the society covers part of Lewis as well as the western townships of Jefferson County. The society collects material from three central school districts, the Copenhagen Central, Carthage Central, and Indian River school districts. This area includes parts of the townships of Theresa, Philadelphia, Antwerp, Le Ray, Wilna, and Champion. Their 21 directors represent the various communities within this area.

April 5, 1810, the state legislature divided the Town of Le Ray and created the Town of Antwerp with some 61,000 acres. Today, nearly half the town is within the military reservation of Fort Drum. The principle village is also called Antwerp, named for the Belgian city where an early purchaser of much of the land lived. The only other settlement of note is Oxbow, which has its own historical society, and is named for a bow or bend in the Oswegatchie River.
Antwerp is the extreme eastern point of Jefferson county, nearest the foothills of the Adirondack mountains. It is bounded on the northeast by St Lawrence County and on the southeast by Lewis County. The towns of Wilna and Philadelphia lay on the southwest, while the Town of Theresa closes the northwestern border.
Settlement in Antwerp began in 1803, while the town was still a part of Brownville.

1. Hillside and Old Town Cemeteries in the village of Antwerp
2. Foster-Kinne Cemetery on Route 11 about three or four miles north of Antwerp toward Gouverneur
3. Spragueville Cemetery in the hamlet of Spragueville
4. Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Oxbow
5. A cemetery on County Route 26 near Oxbow
6. Bemis Cemetery, small, containing dates from the 1820s to the 1860s, located about six and a half miles from the Village of Theresa and about three miles from Oxbow on County Route 22;
7. Vrooman Hill Cemetery on Vrooman Hill Road between County Route 22 and County Route 194, about six miles out of the Village of Theresa.
