1. LOUIS de VILLERS was born in Abbeville, France. According to Evert's
history of St. Lawrence county, he descended from an ancient and respectable
family; was in the service of Louis XVI, as lieutenant in the Battalion
Vermandois, a corps composing a part of the Royal Guards, and stationed most
of the time at Paris. He was transferred to the regiment serving in America
under Gen. Rochambeau, and came to this country about the close of the
Revolutionary War, with Count LeRay de Chaumont, for the purpose of joining
the Allies. He came first to Trenton, afterwards to Cooperstown, thence to
Butternuts. By 1818 the family was living in Wilna, where his daughter was
married.
