§1 ForewordBecause of the intrinsic value of this brief history of Pine Plains and vicinity and the timeliness of its republication during the year in which Pine Plains is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding as a Township, The Little Nine Partners Historical Society asked Mrs. Netter to revise her 1937 paper and sought her permission to republish it.
The original paper was printed in the Pine Plains Register-Herald
and then issued by the Register-Herald as a booklet. The 1937 booklet
began with this paragraph: "One of the most interesting and instructive
sessions ever held by Pine Plains Reading Club was enjoyed Monday
evening when a very large audience heard Miss Helen Cole, local school
librarian, talk on 'Local History.' It was so interesting and authentically
covered that Miss Cole was asked to prepare her subject for printing and
following is a part of her talk, which will be continued in next week's
issue of the Register: (Miss Cole has made an extensive study of local
history, having gleaned her information from the Albany Library, supervisors reports and many books written on the subject.)"
