SHERIDAN, TRYON, CHAPIN, MOORE

Jack Sheridan Wed Apr 12 07:53:46 2000
I am researching my SHERIDAN ancestors. Many lived in Madison, Oneida and Oswego Counties of New York from before 1820 to 1855. What data I currently have is as follows: Joseph SHERIDAN b. 1754 d. 1823 Place of birth: unknown Place of death: Probably near Lenox, Madison County, New York. Joseph appears in the 1820 Federal census in that location. He also appears in the 1790 Federal census of Exeter, Washington Co., Rhode Island, and the 1800 Federal census of Sterling, Windham Co., Connecticut. The Rhode Island and Connecticut census records indicate a much younger wife (maybe a second wife) and a number of children in the household, older males and younger females. He was probably the father of my ggggrandfather Allen Sheridan.

Allen SHERIDAN b. 1778/79 d. 1855 Place of birth: Rhode Island Place of death: probably near Parish, Oswego Co., New York Married: Dorcas, surname unknown, b. 1783 Connecticut d. New York after 1850. Children: James A. 1800, Roxy 1803, William E. 1806, Permillia 1808, Emiline 1810, Hannah A. 1811, Harriet 1818, Maryann 1819, Levi T. 1822, Carolyn E., 1826. The family appears in the 1800 Federal census of Sterling, Windham Co., Connecticut and the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Federal census of Vernon, Oneida Co., New York, and in the 1850 Federal census of Parish, Oswego Co., New York. The first child,James A. SHERIDAN is my gggrandfather.

James A. SHERIDAN b. 1800 d. 1871 Place of birth: Connecticut. Place of death: South Manitou Island, Leelanau Co., Michigan Married: 1830 in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, Betsey FISK b. 1799 Chesterfield, New Hampshire d. 1852 New York Children: Harriet b. 1831 New Hampshire and Aaron b. 1834 New York James A. appears in the 1830 Federal census of Chesterfield, Chesterfield Co., New Hampshire, in the 1840 Federal census of Vernon, Oneida Co., New York and in the 1850 Federal census of Constantia, Oswego Co., New York. Betsey is buried near Constantia, Oswego Co., New York. James is buried on South Manitou Island, in Lake Michigan, now a part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. James was in the Civil war (enlisting in New York) and then moved to Michigan to live near his brother William or son Aaron. Aaron A. Sheridan was lighthouse keeper on South Manitou Island. Aaron and his wife Julia MOORE drowned there in 1878, leaving my grandfather George and four brothers orphans.

William E. SHERIDAN b. 1806 d. 1891 Place of birth: Hebron, Tolland Co., Connecticut Place of death: Michigan Married: Lucy TRYON b. New York 1801 d. 1897 Michigan Children: Almira 1829, Andrew 1831, Lucyann 1833, William 1835, Lyman F. 1837, Newton 1839, Harriet L. 1844. All the children were born in New York. William E. and family appear in the 1840 Federal census of Richland, Oswego Co., New York and the 1850 Federal census of Albion, Oswego Co., New York. William E. and his sons William and Lyman moved to Leelanau Co., Michigan sometime in the 1850’s.

Levi T. SHERIDAN b. 1822, New York d. unknown Married: Lucy Ann Chapin 1849/50. Per the 1850 Federal census, Levi and his new wife were living in the household of Franklin Chapin (born abt. 1786 in Massachusetts) and Sally (b. abt. 1792 in New Hampshire) in Albion, Oswego Co., New York.

I have more information on the descendants of James A. and William E. SHERIDAN in Michigan and the ancestors of Betsey FISK and Julia MOORE but little else on the earlier SHERIDAN ancestors other than what is included here. I have just recently searched the census records and other records in Rhode Island and Connecticut. The census records, combined with a family bible have provided me with this data. It is probable there are descendants, particularly of the many daughters, in New York. I would be most pleased to hear from somebody with information or a connection.

COLEGROVE - COLGROVE

James Gibbs Sat Apr 22 13:21:42 2000
Eli COLEGROVE was one of the first settlers of Madison County, having settled in De Ryter in 1793. His relatives are found nearby in Truxton, Cortland County, through most of the following century -- did any of his descendants remain in Madison County? Did Eli die in De Ryter in 1840? Or did he move to Truxton? Eli was supposedly the son of Oliver COLEGROVE of RI, but there is some doubt that this is the same Eli. Did another Eli settle in Cortland County? Note that COLEGROVE was also spelled COLGROVE by this family.

THACKER, WAITE, DEVOE

Roy Harris Mon May 22 07:00:55 2000
Henry THACKER joined the Oneida Association in Madison County, NY in Sept. 1849, before its name was changed to the Oneida Community. He died 22 Feb 1896 according to his gravestone. The FAMILY REGISTER (Jan. 1, 1849) of the Oneida Association says of Henry THACKER: "Born Sept. 11, 1811 at Owasco, Cayuga County, N.Y. Professed religion and joined the Dutch Reformed Church at Owasco when about 18 years of age. Became a Perfectionist in the fall of 1835, mainly through the influence of Benjamin DEVOE. Was separated in spirit from N.Y. Perfectionism in 1840. His interest in Mr. Noyes's principles continuing to increase finally resulted in his joining the Association in Sept. 1849. Trades: farmer, shoemaker, and horticulturist." Sometime after the breakup of the Oneida Community in 1879/80, Henry THACKER married Clara WAITE who had joined the O.C. 10 Jun 1872. Clara (b. 13 Sep 1825) died on 16 May 1889 in Lewiston, Niagara Co., NY, but is buried in the Oneida Community cemetery beside the grave of the founder of the Community, John Humphrey Noyes. Was Henry living in Lewiston at the time of Clara's death and of his own death on 22 Feb 1896?
Who were Henry THACKER's parents and siblings? I have only one clue to a possible relative. On 1 Nov 1848, he bought land in Benton Twp, Berrien Co., Michigan, from my ancestors Earl H. and Dorliska THACKER. Henry sold the land on Sept. 19, 1850, a year after joining the Community.
Information on Benjamin DEVOE and the area in NY in which he was teaching his Perfectionist doctrine in the fall of 1835 would also be very welcome.

Ethel Gaspar Mon May 29 09:27:13 2000
Am looking for my grgrgrandmother, Mary GALLAGHER, born RI 1850 or 51. Father was Wm GALLAGHER. All I have is her marriage certificate 1868 in IL stating that her father, Wm who lived in NY state gave authority to a David Murphy to give permission for her to marry. She had one son 1869 and is on 1870 IL census. By 1880 census she no longer lives there but son (11yo) does. Later found out that the son was raised by one of his aunts and that Mary died (not sure where) early on and was buried back east. Maybe NY? Back then could they ship a body from IL to NY? Maybe she died in NY and husband brought son back to IL before 1880 census. What a mystery! Can anyone help? Thanks.

SMITH

Valerie Pettovello Thu Jun 29 18:31:53 2000
I have just been told by an elderly uncle that my grandmother is from Cazenovia. She was a SMITH. I have never tried to trace her line because I thought that i'd run into a lot of confusion with the SMITH name. Finding out the town has just made my job easier. I do know she was born in 1896. Her father's name was Frank and her mother's name was Ann or Cora. There is some confusion on the maiden name. It was either WOODWORTH or WOODWARD. She had a brother named Robert and a sister named Clara. Clara smoked cigars. She married Thomas GOUGHERTY form Caledonia New York. Any leads would be appreciated.
thank you Valerie
