Text of a letter written by Thomas (March 5, 1843) to his father Samuel and family located in the Town of Eaton, County of Madison, in care of Morrisville.

Notes by Harry Hollingsworth - author of the Hollingsworth Heritage - suggest the location where Thomas wrote the letter and also indicate that Thomas died March 6, 1844 though location of death is not given.

The transcript of a letter (in the possession of LeRoy S. Hollingsworth) written by Thomas was presented on pg. 55, Volume Six, June No. 22... it is dated March 5 1843.

In leading into the letter, Henry Hollingsworth states: "Thomas Hollingsworth, the man who wrote the letter, was just 24 at the time. He died one year and a day later (March 6, 1844) and is buried in Spring (Pratt's) Cemetery in Eaton, Madison County.".

We have a copy of a telegram dated June 4, 1988, by Central New York Telephone & Telegraph Company, at Morrisville, marked "To Mrs. Eliza Carey, Augusta, N.Y." It simply says: "My father is dead. Funeral Wednesday at 12 o'clock. John Hollingsworth." Eliza Carey was his mother's sister. (Courtesy of Mrs. Ralph G. Snyder, Herkimer, New York.) The date on the telegram is probably the date Joseph C. Hollingsworth died. [The Morrisville newspaper reported the date as June 3.].

This coincides with the fact that, when listed in the 1860 U.S. Census, he was not shown to be blind, though that information was called for. (Page 491, Munnsville, Madison County.) The 1870 Census (page 158, reverse, Eaton) shows John, aged 13, :blind". The 1860 showed his age as "3 years" which means his blindness had not yet occurred.

Death was caused from a cancerous growth. He was born at Pratts Hollow, where burial will be made Friday afternoon. He leaves two daughters.
