  Eugene I. Lawless 
  Eugene I. Lawless, 73, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 7, 1999, in the 
emergency room of the Oneida Healthcare Center, after being stricken at home.
  He was born on Oct. 26, 1926, in Oriskany Falls, the son of William and 
Alice Coleman Lawless. Mr. Lawless was rasied and educated in Vernon, 
graduating from the former Vernon High School, where he served as class 
  He married Arlene Hanrahan on Sept. 17, 1949, in St. Francis de Sales 
Church, Utica. Mr. and Mrs. Lawless have resided in Oneida for the past 47 
  Prior to his retirement in 1989, Mr. Lawless was employed with the Oneida 
City School District, serving as the head custodian at the Oneida High 
School. At his retirement dinner, the high school faculty gave him the 
recongnition as the "Man of the Year" for "Never an unkind word... Never a 
bad mood... Always a good friend." 
  Mr. Lawless was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, a member of the 
Knights of Columbus, E. Bart Hanifin Council No 473 and the American Legion,
Oneida Post 169, and was a former member of the Order of the Owls, Oneida 
Nest 1606. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the 
Pacific Theater. 
  Surviving are his wife, Arlene; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julie A. and
Patrick Flagler and Elaine E. and Denny Shumway, all of Sherrill; two sons 
and daughters-in-law, John M. and Nancy Lawless and Paul J. and Charlene 
Lawless, all of Oneida; one brother, Richard Lawless of Vernon; one sister, 
Margaret Morgan of Watertown; nine grandchildren, Andi Lynn Hyle, Denise 
Paluck, Stephanie King, Abigail Lawless, Karen Hayes, U.S.Army Spc. Joseph 
Shumway, Colleen Lawless, Erin Lawless and Shannon Lawless; two great-
grandchildren, Jessie Elaine Hyle and Cody John King; and several nieces, 
nephews, and cousins.
