ONEIDA -- Joseph R. "Joe" Butler Sr., 55, of 136 Sherman St., died late Saturday evening, Aug. 31, 2002 at the Oneida Healthcare Center Extended Care Facility after a courageous battle with kidney cancer, his loving family was at his side.

Joe was born on Feb. 9, 1947 in Oneida, the son of William L. Butler Sr. and Jane Maiura Butler and attended Oneida High School.

On April 9, 1977 in Central Valley, Joe and Jennifer Jackson were united in marriage.

Prior to his illness Joe was a golf grounds keeper at the Oneida Ltd. golf course and was previously employed with Accurate Die Casting of Fayetteville.

He was a member of the NRA, American Trap Shooting Association, South Shore Trap Shooting League, Dewitt Trap Shooting League, Chittenango Rod and Gun Club and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed golfing.

Surviving are his wife, Jennifer; two sons, Joseph R. Butler Jr. and James F. Butler, both of Oneida; one daughter, Lori and her husband, Jason Brummer of Oneida; his mother, Jane of Oneida; six grandchildren, Amber Carpenter, Anthony Butler, Joseph Butler III, Jon Carpenter Jr., Mariah Butler, Michael Butler; three step-grandchildren, Christopher Brummer, Cory Brummer and Jason Brummer Jr; one brother, William Butler Jr. of Oneida; one sister, Jean and brother-in-law, John Mazzullo of Oneida; several nieces and nephews, including Heather Mazzullo and Susan Butler, Bruce Butler and John Mazzullo; and several aunts, cousins and in-laws. Joe was predeceased by his father, William L. Butler Sr. in 1981 and his step-father, Joseph A. Butler in 1993.
