CANASTOTA - James R. Wilhite, 74, of 208 Stroud St., died Sunday, Sept. 19,
1999 at Oneida Healthcare Center, following a brief illness.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1924 in East St. Louis, Mo., the son of Hoyte and
Helen Pritchett Wilhite.
Mr. Wilhite was educated in Illinois before moving to Canastota where he had
lived most of his life.
He had been a soil conservation technician with the U.S. Government,
Department of Agriculture for 39 years, retiring ill. 1984.
Mr. Wilhite was a member of the United Church of Canastota and a former
chairman of the board.
He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard and had been a vice-
commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 600 ofCanastota.
Mr. Wilhite married Joan Wechner on July 7, 1945 in Greenwich Village,
New York City.
Surviving are his wife; one son, James Wilhite of Canastota; two daughters
and one son-in-law, Lynn DuBois of Apopka, Fla. and Jeanne and Michael Dunn
of Canastota; four grandchildren, Eric Dunn, Shelley Luetkemeyer, Rebecca
Truelson and Heidi DuBois, and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Wilhite was
predeceased by a son, Michael Wilhite, who died in 1984. (See Death Notice.)
