I am reading a letter written by my grandfather to his father in 1899 telling about his future bride to be, my grandmother. It says:"her family are Congregationalists. Her mothers' family are English, that is her grandparents. I know a great many of them and they are fine people-all well-to-do. The BORDEN family is from CAZENOVIA,N.Y. One of these Bordens came to Dundee,IL about fifty years ago (about 1849)and left a family of three sons and a a daughter. One of the sons is Florences' father. Other BORDENS settled on other parts of Illinois so you see that Florence has lots of relatives around here. I have met many of them and like them very much. I met her at Jim Fords' house. He is an old Albany boy and we were at Cornell together..."and it goes on. My fathers name is Robert BORDEN Fletcher and my twin is James BORDEN Fletcher. My grandfather that wrote this letter was Robert C. Fletcher an Architect living in Evanston,IL and employed 172 Washington St. Chicago,IL. WELLS, VAN BUREN

Max Geyer Sat Jul 18 12:44:46 1998
I am a Wells descendant, and I think my ancestors migrated from Rhode Island to Madison County, NY, in the late 1790s. If anyone reading this could help me fill in some holes in my family history, I would appreciate it very much. My GG Grandfather was James Wells. I believe he was born in either 1793 or 1796 in Madison County, NY. I also have reason to believe he was the oldest son of Gardner Wells, one of three brothers (Gardner, Joshua, and Robert) who, in 1796, migrated from Rhode Island to Nelson in Madison Co., NY.
James Wells, who was a blacksmith by trade, married Sarah (Sally) Van Buren (born 28 Mar. 1801) while still in the state of New York. The couple had a number of children born while they were living in Nelson Co. and Oneida Co., NY. Sometime during the late 1830s or early 1840s, the James Wells family left New York and ultimately settled in Putnam County, Ohio (in northwest Ohio), where they lived on a farm near the town of Kalida. One of the daughters, Emogene Wells, married my Great Grandfather Amos Geyer.
James Wells died in Kalida, OH, on 4 May 1871. His wife, Sarah, died in Kalida on 16 March 1864. They are both buried in a Kalida cemetery.
I would appreciate any information that anyone could provide concerning my Wells ancestors while they were residing in Rhode Island and New York, and before. Also, I could use any information available on James Wells wife's family, thought to be the William Van Buren family, who were related in some way to Martin Van Buren (the 8th President). - Max

Their children -- Sybrant, Catherine, Johannes, Peter and Harmen -- were said to have been born in Clockville. Sybrant married Sophia Bratt; Catherine married John Benneway; Johannes married Margaret Hill; Peter married Phebe Dickinson and Harmen married Neeltje Bogert.
I am particularly interested in Peter & Phebe Fort, who moved back to Saratoga, NY by 1825. There is some information about this family in a "Bronson's Partial Genealogy" that I can't locate. The Bronsons were a prominent family in Madison County.

BURROWS / BARROWS - CHASE

Lori Chase Tue Sep 29 10:45:26 1998
According to his obituary, Calvin H. BARROWS was born in Brookfield, Madison County, April 14 1813. Parents (though not listed) were Loyd and Elizabeth DOXEY (or DOXIE)BARROWS. Now, even though the obit spells his surname with an A, the family name has been more commonly known as BURROWS. There is also a Lloyd Burrows in the 1820 census for Brookfield (page#102). The family later relocated to Pennsylvania, first Potter (1840-1850) and then McKean (1860-) counties. Seeking any Madison Co. information on this family, and about the Joseph CHASE family which intermarried with them. Both families are from New England (mainly MA). Thanks -- Lori
