In 1794 a colony from Rhode Island settled in the south-west quarter of the town, which had been previously purchased in their interest by their agents (Gilbert TOMPKINS, Deacon SIMMONS and Samuel BROWNELL) who visited the locality in 1792, and which was thereafter and is still know as Rhode Island quarter.
