STEWART / STUART

Larry Stewart Tue Oct 5 07:58:50 1999
Fished Madison Lake numerous times as a youth, Father Wallace J. Stewart, his Father Wiley D. Stewart. Told me many stories of Madison, one that most the stone buildings in Madison (the town) were built by one of our ancestors, including the stone octogon bldg west of town. Another story is that there are 3 Stuarts buried in the cemetary on the southeast side of town cemetary, hung as horse thieves for supplying horses to the south during civil war. Father claimed to be student at Madison in 40's, used to talk about the rooftop skating rink near madison lake. Anybody know about any of this?????

DONALD J SMITH Thu Oct 21 17:42:05 1999
For better than 10 years, trying to find any data on my GR-GR-Grandfather, AARON HESS, born about 1805 in New York state. His wife MARY had died when he arrived in Michigan with at least some of his children. I beleive he married a SARAH ( SALLY) CURTIS who had been married to a Mr. WOOD. They were in Mundy Twp. in 1850 census and by the 1870 census they were living in Vienna Township in Genesee County, Michigan, BUT in seperate households. I think they must have divorced. She continued to live there, but AARON HESS seems to have removed to some other location. I also beleive that his son JOHN HESS was there about another 10 years. I have always wondered if AARON HESS returned to NY and maybe he is buried with his first wife. She was MARY (RESSEGUIE) HESS, born 12 Jan. 1809 @ Milton, NY. and died 30 Sep. 1840 @Madison County, NY. None of the other names listed above are related to me, but because of his second marriage, AARON HESS is and I have found him in the 1840 Federal census at Veona in Oneida county. ANY help will be appreciated as this is my first time in the NY area doiung genealogy and I need all the help I can get. Thank You for any consideration.

STOWELL, ROGERS, CRANSON, CRANSTON

Cathy Kuhl Fri Oct 29 15:29:24 1999
According to the Mayflower Quarterly, February 1996, the Sybel ROGERS who married Eliphalet STOWELL in 1804, Ashfield, MA is the daughter of Gershom ROGERS. Quoted from the Mayflower Quarterly:"Gershom Rogers, the father of Sybel Rogers, was born 6th of December in 1763 in Ashfield, MA, the first born child of Benjamin and Temperance Phinney Rogers. Both his mother and father carry Mayflower lines to Pilgrim Thomas Rogers; his father carries one Mayflower line to Pilgrim Stephen Hopkins. Gershom married Abigail King the 14th of June 1784 in Ashfield, MA. Gershom lived only four years into the marriage. Abigail King Rogers took as her second husband Abner Cranson on 28 May 1789. Abigail King was probably the daughter of John and Mary (?) King and a sister of Susannah King who married Daniel Standish on the 7th of Dec. 1788. Abigail’s parentage is still being researched at this writing. The only offspring of the Gershom Rogers and Abigail King marriage was Sybel Rogers who was born before the 7th of July 1788 as proven in a document appointing Abigail Rogers her guardian and naming Sybel as the daughter of Gershom Rogers and witnessed by John King. This guardianship document is on file at the Probate Court, 33 King St. Northampton, MA. Along with the guardian document in Box 124, No. 5 are two other documents: 1) A document appointing Abigail Rogers as the Administrator of the Estate of Gershom Rogers, dated 1 of July 1788 and 2) A document dated the 26 of Feb. 1805 on the appraisal of property of the late Gershom Rogers. No photocopying is allowed of these documents and security guards are on duty. The Genealogical clue that took one hour to uncover at the New England Genealogical Society in Boston was a manuscript on the Cranson family of Ashfield, MA. This Cranson manuscript by Winfred Lovering Holman, FASG, was prepared in March 1944 and documents the Cranson family in public records in Ashfield, MA. According to the Holman manscript on the 7th of May 1808, property in Ashfield was sold by Abigail King Rogers Cranson and her second husband Abner Cranson. This property was left by Gershom Rogers for the maintenance of his daughter Sybel. The deed went on to name Sybel’s husband Eliphalet Stowell. A copy of the land deed was obtained from the Franklin Co., MA Register of Deeds in Greenfield, MA. The deed totally proves the identity of Sybel Rogers and her claim to Mayflower descent. The intention of marriage of Sybel Rogers and Eliphalet Stowell was filed in Ashfield vital records on the 9th of June 1804. Fortunately, Sybel’s parentage was well documented in MA before she and Eliphalet moved to upstate NY, Chenango Co. Sybel’s parentage was not correctly identified in Stowell Genealogy by William Henry Harrison Stowell. Although the Stowell Genealogy does name their eight children, the genealogy should be used as a guide with caution. According to Stowell Genealogy, Sybel Rogers Stowell, the only child of Gershom Rogers, died in 1825 at Amboy, Oswego Co., NY. She and her only husband Eliphalet Phineas Stowell, would have many descendants with claim to Mayflower descent. Sybel Rogers has three proven Mayflower lines. The family of Eliphalet and Sybel ROGERS STOWELL were in Madision Co., NY in 1810 and 1814.

WAGNER - CAREY / CARY - DAINES

Laura Sullivan Thu Dec 9 19:06:34 1999
My ggg-grandmother was named Margaret Wagner. She was born about 1809, I believe in Madison County, New York. I know of her as having lived in both Jerusalem and Italy, Yates County, New York. One of the censuses says that she had been married three times. I don't know who the first marriage was to but the second marriage was to a man with the last name Cary or Carey. He died by 1850, leaving her with 3 children. They are: Alzina Carey b. aft Sep. 13, 1845, Sarah (Sally) Carey b. bef Sep. 27, 1847, and George Carey b. aft Sep. 27, 1850. By 1855. Margaret Wagner married Seth Daines who came from Vermont. They had a child together, Ambrose Daines. In the federal and state censuses from 1855-1875, the Carey children alternate using the last named Carey and Daines. I don't know which one they eventually went by. I would like to find the ancestors of Margaret Wagner. I believe that Alzina Carey may have married someone with the last name Hill. Any help will be appreciated.
