HORRID AFFAIR
A man by the name of Wm. SANFORD, in a state of mental derangement, has been
for some time past confined in jail at Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and recently
a man in a state of intoxication, by the name of UPDEGRAFF, was confined in
the same room. By some means, probably the assistance of UPDEGRAFF. SANFORD
got free from the floor, to which he had been chained, and killed UPDEGRAFF
with a billet of wood, mangling and bruising his head in a shocking manner.
After the murder it was with great difficulty that he could be secured, being
armed with his club and a large butcher knife, with which he rushed upon every
person who attempted to enter the room. Quere, How came a crazy man, confined
in jail, by a large butcher knife ?

The Boston Transcript of Saturday evening gives an account of the death of
two men by suffocation, from having descended, on Friday night, into a vault
attached to the Female Orphan Asylum, upon which they were employed. Two other
men were drawn out almost senseless. The two who are dead were brothers, named
Hugh and Patrick LEVERY, aged 32 and 36 years. A fifth, who was employed with
them, after having procured assistance, descended into the vault, and drew his
companions out at the risque of his own life.
