From the Buffalo Journal
SHOCKING SUICIDE - Mr. Peter R. BRISTOL, clerk in the Bank of Buffalo, was
found this morning sitting upright in a chair in the back room of the bank,
having all of the upper part of his head torn off, and his brain scattered against
the wall of the room, and a trooper's pistol lying beside him, with a lamp burning
near by. Wm. A. CARPENTER, Esq. Coroner, was immediately notified, who summoned
a jury to investigate this shocking affair. It appeared on examination that
the hand of the deceased was somewhat burned, apparently from the flash of powder,
and from all the circumstances, the jury were of the opinion that he came to
his death by firing the contents of a loaded pistol into his own brain, doubtless
by putting the muzzle near to his temple. He was a young gentleman, between
twenty-one and two years old and of impeachable character, and much esteemed
by a numerous acquaintance. No cause is known which led to this most lamentable
catastrophe.
