SUSPECTED WITHOUT CAUSE
A gentleman by the name of STEWART, who formerly resided in this village,
but is now a resident of Michigan, has lately returned from Montreal, where
he has been detained as a prisoner, having been arrested under the following
circumstances: - He was a contractor on the Illinois canal and went to Montreal
for the purpose of employing laborers. He had the precaution to make his business
known to the police of the city, and obtained permission to carry out his designs.
He had employed his men, and happened to be getting them together preparatory
to starting for Illinois, about the same time, and near the same point where
the recent rebellion in Lower Canada commenced. This brought upon him the suspicion
of the agent of the government, that he was connected with the rebellion. He
was arrested, put in irons, and taken to Montreal. In going through the city
to prison, chained to another prisoner, he was assaulted and beaten by the mob;
and he now carries upon his person the evidence of their tender mercies. His
life, and that of his fellow prisoner, were saved by the interference of the
military authorities. He was confined in prison several weeks, and was finally
discharged, upon furnishing abundant evidence that his mission to the district
of Montreal was a peaceable one.
