TERRIBLE ACCIDENT - Loss of Life -
We learn from the Beverly (Mass) Citizen, of the 7th inst. That five of the children of Mr. John WHIPPLE, of Hamilton, from the age of 2 to 12 years were shockingly burned on Wednesday night last, by the bursting of a spirit-lamp, about which they were seated, looking over their school lessons.
The lamp burning dimly, one of them took it to see of it needed filling, when it suddenly exploded with noise like the discharging of a pistol, and enveloped them in a sheet of fire. With rare presence of mind, the eldest boy ran and plunged himself in a snow-drift at the door. Three others were seized by different members of the family present, and carried to a pump, when the fire was extinguished, while a fifth was dipped into a tub of buttermilk, which, fortunately, was at hand.

The youngest child has since died, and one other seems in an almost hopeless condition. The others, it is thought, may recover, though all very sadly burned, their faces and upper extremities being blistered and almost entirely denuded.

No reason can be given why the accident should have occurred. There are ten children in the family, and at the time of the accident there were 14 persons in the room. The lamp was shattered to fragments, and the pieces driven across the room with great violence.
