New Haven, Aug. 31 - Prof Jas. L. KINGSLEY, long identified with Yale College, died this morning, after a few days illness, at his residence in this city.

New York, Aug. 31 - The steamer United States sails to-morrow afternoon for Aspinwall and Navy Bay, with a large number of passengers for California.

Baltimore, Aug. 31 - The Savannah Republican states, on what it deems reliable authority , that Hon. Alex H. STEVENS, of that State, will support Mr. WESTER for the Presidency.

Charleston, Aug. 31 - The bark Jasper, from Havana, bound to New York, is reported ashore near Key West. It is also reported that there are numerous wrecks in the vicinity of Key West.

FAKE PUPILS IN THE UNIVERSITY - The Board of Education have approved the selection of Edward GLOVER, John McGARRY and Edward McFETRIDGE, from the class of sixteen competitors for the chance of a free education in the University, who were examined by Messrs, ANDREWS, CURTISS, SMITH and the Superintendent.

The Board also, confirmed the choice of teachers for the several public schools. The publication of the proceedings of the Board is deferred until to-morrow.

The Buffalo papers announce the death of a young and promising citizen of that place, Mr. Harlow PALMER.

They are patching up Court street bridge. The planks are generally loose on the structure; and sufficient room is left between the boards to drop a quarter or form a trap for a child's foot.

The Board of Education, at a special meeting held on Monday evening appointed the following scholars from the public schools of the city to the free scholarships in the University of Rochester, viz: John McGORRAY, Edwin GLOVER, Edward McFETRIDGE.
