A SCREW WITHOUT FRICTION - We have been shown an invention of our ingenious
townsman, C. F. SPENCER, which is novel to say the least, and may prove
highly useful. It is a screw without friction, or in other words - a screw
which may be turned as easily under a ton's weight as under a hundred
pounds. The screw is made by a hollow, or half round groove about the shaft
and the nut contains no thread whatever. Round balls of steel are inserted
in the interior of the nut, which project just far enough to fill the groove
in the screw. As the screw is turned these balls roll and act as friction
rollers. Some experiments which have been made tend to demonstrate the great
utility of the invention. Such screws can be made of any required size for
raising a greater or less weight.

MRS. HINCKLEY DEPARTED - It seems to be settled that no steps will be
taken to set aside the verdict against Mrs. HINCKLEY, and she has departed
for Sing Sing, to serve out her term as prescribed by the law. It is
to be hoped that she will find no occasion to follow her avocation there.
